Last week, website IGN published a list of ten ways to fix Japanese role-playing games. Japan's 2ch., the largest internet forum in the world, has responded.

IGN's list criticized things in Japanese role-playing games like the lifeless environments, linear gameplay, stereotypical stories and traditional battle systems. (Read the full list here.) 2ch., where users post anonymously, has responded.

Keep in mind: These remarks were posted anonymously by people on the internet. Some of the remarks might be serious, some might not be. They do point to a larger sentiment, however.

"Oblivion and Fallout fanatics are exponentially more annoying than any Final Fantasy fanatic."

"Hey foreigners: we find your first-person shooters boring as **** What do you say to that?"

"When I see all the 'sniping' and corpse-desecrating 'teabagging' going on in US games, the thought of what what foreigners do when they get mad [in real life] freaks me out."

"Japanese RPGs are created for the express purpose of letting one experience the blooming of their full powers from a total zero starting point. They're necessary for keeping public order in Japan."

"Okay, so give us some foreign RPGs that are more interesting than Japanese ones. I just don't find foreign RPGs interesting at all."

"Oblivion's okay, but foreign games lack subtlety. They lack detail, and the character design and stories are bad."

"Americans can't understand complexity so a lot of the best stuff doesn't get translated. Like Megami Tensei"

    "I call 'cultural differences'!"

"Show me an American-made RPG that satisfactorily addresses all of these complaints."

"Do foreign companies even make RPGs anymore? The only games that come to mind are first-person shooter action games. If we followed this 'advice' to the letter they'd have us making Grand Theft Auto clones."

Ah this is a typical view on Japanese gaming. Its not complex enough.

You relate how complex a game is to how well its made or how "smart" it is. Even how difficult it is.

In Japan, it seems like they only care about how "fun" a game is, even if it is basic in principal, childlike or whatever.

Japan: The result should be good entertainment.
Elsewhere: Graphics, difficulty, "smart" gameplay, detail and choice are what is important.

That is the culture difference showing. You cant have fun where the main character has pink hair and the fighting is repetitive. They can.

The Japs don't like anything but JRPGs for one reason. They have delusional fantasies.

Japs imagine they are JRPG heroes. They imagine they are this super cool, super strong guy who saves the world and gets hot/cute women.

They prove this time and time again.
They celebrate video game/anime characters birthdays.
    They marry video game/anime characters.
They dress up and act as these characters.
They even have furious rage when people defile their characters. One time they drove a manga author insane because one of her characters in the manga (a moe girl) was not a virgin, and all the Japs fucking raged hard about it and hated her forever when they found out.

Basically, Japs don't like WRPGs because they are out of touch with reality and/or want to escape from it.
I guess they prefer imagining they are Sephiroth than Fargoth.

98% of them still don't provide entertainment. I've never played a game based on how it looks. I still would rather play 16 bit games over newer games any day. And thats not because of nostalgia, I just find them more playable than new ones. Where is the satisfaction in characters who are always predictable?
Anybody could predict the outcome of a JRPG just by watching the intro and a few bits into the game nowadays.

As are JRPGs. First, game stories are bad in general. How are JRPGs any better. They are usually a spiky haired kid who has to defeat evil all by himself and he doesn't notice his female friend wants to bone him. The characters are all chiche. At least in western RPGs, you make the character. I'll give him that almost all WRPGs are based of of Tolkien (right spelling)

And yes JRPGs are extremely repetitive in nature with respect to combat especially. A few magic spells, super moves, some cinematic summon spell, but its all still grinding.

You have to aim very precisely in oblivion, all melee weapons work like guns with a very short range.
But I agree Oblivion has fucking horrible gameplay

ITT: Japanese posters make a number of comments that are as uninformed as those put forward by IGN.

Then /v/irgins try to prove them wrong by citing games that are 10+ years old.

    Good work, retards.

Typical anonymous responses, countering and attacking the sources instead of actually confronting and responding to the complaints, many of which are legitimate.

The Japanese formula, video games or otherwise, is always, "Stick with the status quo, wait for someone else to innovate, then copy them."

Japs are xenophobic, more than often they find their so far up their asses they don't know what is happening outside it.

I mean christ, there's Mass Effect 2 AND Bioshock 2 coming to adress these problems, and hell there's Risen and Dragon's Age too.

Dragon Age Origins GTA with witches and dragons.
Fallout GTA with Robots and radiation.

    Enjoy your WRPGTAs.

Disney is overrated. The enduring popularity of their movies is just proof that you can sell the common people any mediocre product if you have billions of dollars in marketing.

Don Bluth and oldschool (pre-3D) Dreamworks movies fucking RAPE Disney.

2ch is short for 2channel, one of the largest, if not THE largest text-only discussion board on the planet.
2chan is short for Futaba Channel, a japanese imageboard.
4chan is short for Yotsuba Channel, an english imageboard, based on 2chan.
    4ch is short for 4channel or channel4, a different site than 4chan.

You failed to see the point.

Look at the picture. The Japs want what is on the right, not what is on the left.

    >lifeless environments

    You mean like Fallout 3?
Yes I know post-apocalyptic blah blah blah but it's still bland/boring as shit. The best parts of the game are when you AREN'T in the wasteland.
There are plenty of JRPGs with good environments.

    >linear gameplay

Too much linearity is just as bad as too much non-linearity, if you want to make an RPG with a decent story that will keep you interested.

    >stereotypical stories

WRPGs are far more guilty of this than JRPGs.

    >traditional battle systems

What matters is whether or not battles are fun. WRPGs are more action-oriented and that works, JRPGs are more strategy-oriented and that works.

They are pretty much different genres.
