Well yeah, given that it says a lot when a magazine goes against the current and says a game sucks when everyone is dying to play it and giving retard levels of hype. Negative reviews alienate the blind fanboys, and if they have dealings with the company, risks the business relationship with said company for future games.

If this were a niche game by a niche company, a positive review this early might have a little truth to it. But this is a main installment in a flagship series. They're not going to say it sucks no matter how bad it is.

Linearity is a good thing in a JRPG, all that pointless wandering around I did in FFXII was one of the main reasons I hated the game.

meh, I didn't like XII either. Story was good but very obviously rushed to completion, gambits played the game for you and if you didn't use them, battles were still longer and more drawn out than playing in a normal ATB system would have been.

Vaan was cancer, judges got almost no screentime until right before you fought them, and Ashe was fucking irritating (I blame that on her voice actor though)

Exploration and some of the characters were the only good parts of that game. Having a full-blown city with realistic moving townspeople blew my mind at the time.

-Linear. Even the Japanese are complaining about it
-Can't skip or avoid any fight. Can't flee
-Have little choice in your party (and I mean who is fighting , not who can you chose from like in FF4)
    -No towns
    -No alternative paths

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH LINEARITY?

At least I'm not wasting time looking for something thats not there or spending extra time looking for one item that, once again, might not be where Im looking.

Playing Tales of Symphonia. The most exploration I do is running off the path to open a chest. AND IM OK WITH THAT.

Some games are meant for exploration and some aren't. As long as the game is made well, it doesnt NEED exploration. And quite frankly, Im sick of exploring in JRPGs and fighting monsters in ten different battles before I actually reach a chest to get one little thing. Fuck that.

It's not a problem if they game isn't poorly made and still allows you to explore a vast world without getting lost. Having such a linear game doesn't allow for an enjoyable replayable experience.

    >>47112525
It is, however, fun to find special treasure.

Most modern RPGs lack any form of making exploration fun. Alternate paths with treasure don't go very far, the paths that ARE far almost always have items that suck (turning it into nothing but a waste of time), and sometimes you can't come back if you find you took the correct path all along. And of course, it can be fairly annoying to backtrack to a certain spot just to check one nook that has nothing in it.

It's like if you built a town with ten houses, but there are never any NPCs and only one house has a treasure chest, which contains only one Potion. Of course exploring the game ends up sucking. There's nothing new or exciting to find. Nowadays, it's only done in the very off chance that someone or something is hidden there for you, which isn't the case anymore. Like how RPGs USED to have optional hidden characters.

I had SO much fun with fallout 3. Really getting into your character and, well, role-playing. I didn't carry around the most OP weapons, or stack the broken perks when leveling- I just played like I felt the character I chose would play- a more-less selfish kid who was abandoned by his father and took it out on others, without being an evil menace. Wandering around, discovering new locations, and treating it more like a survival game made it a lot of fun.

Although I can see your point about an open world being empty and boring, this argument doesn't hold any water with Fallout 3. In Fallout 3 you have plenty of towns, dungeons and enemy encounters. Not to mention random encounters which were both awesome and hilarious in their own respect. You could discover miniature stories that devolved into small quests that would also often be fucking awesome. Locations that would tie in with the universe like finding the alien space craft which was undeniably awesome.

I enjoyed exploring the wasteland more than the actual storyline. You obviously didn't play the game past a few hours, and if you did, you played like like a fucking jrpg, just following the main story line.

The thing most people don't seem to understand about the game being linear is it is not just about where you can walk on the map. It is about everything you do in the game.

FF13 is like watching a movie that does not play unless you keep pressing the play button. It is so linear, you can barely justify calling it a game.

Anyway, a 9/10 review from a big name reviewer of a game that is not released yet. I wonder how much they were paid for this review score?

One thing I have learned in cases like this is to half the review score for a more accurate and reliable score.

    > Every FF is linear.

WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING? Have you even played the other FF games in your lifetime?

Congratulations, you have an opinion. Personally, everything about FFIX makes me want to puke, but to each his own

    >>/v/ opinion: Non-linear games like Fallout 3 are the best thing created since sliced bread.

I've held it for a while, and now I'm saying it. /v/'s opinion is stupid. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I just don't get some of the people here.

No, you do quests and fight with numbers. Either you have the numbers to win or you don't. It's not hard.

    >god himself wrote it.

Don't be ridiculous. God can't write it himself, he has no corporeal form. He instead possesses the game reviewers to write it for him.

I liked how FF1 was so linear you couldn't get lost in it and how I always knew where I was supposed to go in it when I played it in the early 90's without any guides or help.

Wow, did you not read my post at all? I said they only care about reviews when they're bashing games they don't like. If it bashes a game they do like? They say "lol reviews" but then the next day go back to acting like reviews are true.

It's hypocritical, that's my point. /v/ is EXTREMELY hypocritical.
