Ok /v/, im the biggest fucking pussy in the world when it comes to anything horror related.

Pretty much anything can scare the everloving shit out of me. I consciously avoid horror movies and games because I know id never actually play/watch the whole thing.

Bioshock scared the shit out of me at parts and, hell, even Shaun of the dead scared me (only the first watch, though). Im not even fucking joking.

Im especially susceptible to cheap stuff like crap leaping out at you extreme gore.

So what would happen if I played dead space? I pirated it for some reason and an pretty bored, even though I know id probably soil myself playing it.

Dead Space is not scary at all. There's one or two moments where you might jump at something popping out, but it's not a horror game.

This is coming from a person who took a year to work up the courage to play through Ravenholm without noclipping.

Dead Space is very intense with a lot of BOO scares and horrible rumbling wearing on your nerves.

Anyone who's completed a few Thief games or System Shock 2 should be sufficiently desensitized to the atmosphere, however it'll probably make most people shit themselves.

Dead Space has a medium amount of pop out of a closet scares and a very unnerving atmosphere because of the sound design.

Doom 3 has a high amount of pop out of a closet scares but the atmosphere isn't as creepy as Dead Space.

FEAR has a low amount of pop out of a closet scared but when something does pop out it's pretty above average in terms of poo poo pants level. The atmosphere is right under Doom 3 in terms of poo poo pants level also.

This guide is 80% accurate so feel free to use it to rate poo poo pants levels in these games.

The reason Dead Space isn't scary is because in all but one level, the enemies are slow and not very smart.

You never get the feeling of being overwhelmed, you always feel like you can easily handle whatever comes at you.

There are a couple parts with enemies that can't be killed and you have to freeze/vaporize/etc. them with traps, but those parts are action-packed areas and not creepy areas.

Some of the things that scared me or freaked me out in dead space the most wasn't even the "boo" stuff a lot of the time. It was stuff like hearing a banging and walking around a corner to see a crew member with his chest torn open slam his head against the wall. Or walking into the infirmary and seeing the nurse slit her throat.

    Or this:

While I never found it scary, I do have to hand it to the game - it really does a good job of making itself feel oppressive.

Nothing good happens to anyone in the game. The audio logs you find of the couple trying to escape, and the guy who cuts his limbs off with a power saw to prevent himself from killing when infected are particularly bleak.

Also, there isn't some happy "Yay! We beat Wesker with our dual-RPG shot into a fucking volcano now let's go be fucking extreme!" ending. Just death, sorrow, and D: right up to the credits.

Was anyone genuinely scared of an enemy? For me it was the tall guys that broke apart into smaller necromorphs when they died. Everything down to sound made me hate encountering them

    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)22:57 No.46771665
the horror in dead space is mostly audio, which is why a lot of people weren't scared. if you play volume up with headphones/surround sound, you'll find yourself stopping a lot asking yourself "what the fuck was THAT" when you hear something clang nearby.

playing through the game on less than hard mode, in light, without high volume, will dampen the experience beyond scary to just a generic TPS.

    No light source.

    Middle of the night.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)23:01 No.46771915
You are supposed to play horror games in the dead of night, with no lights on, alone.

So play it in the middle of the afternoon in a fully lit room, preferably with a few friends.

The game shouldn't be anywhere NEAR as scary.

Dead Space isn't that scary past the first 15 minutes, honestly. I tried everything to make the game remotely creepy, and it just didn't work. I made it a point to only play it around 10 with all of the lights turned off and the sound cranked up.

It's more of an action game than anything. Guns can destroy everything with ease, and they give you a ton of ammo.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)23:08 No.46772333
    Play it with a trainer.

The game is a whole lot less scary when you can blow the living fuck out of anything and everything that moves.

Shit I even got a special save that gave me the level six military armor at the start of the game, along with fully upgraded weps.

So I was armed to the teeth before the fucking game even started AND I had infinite ammo.

Normally the monsters could track you by the smell of shit in your pants, in the trainer version they could track you by the trail of bullets and burns on the walls.

Honestly some games catch me off-guard.

I was playing Monster Hunter and I was doing a quest and I avoided the big monster creature. So like 2 areas away I'm moving around and I hear a loud screech that paralyzes me and scared the crap out of me.

Fucking boss followed me around and made me shit. Fear of dying in one hit was probably why I spazzed out.

OP. Dead Space is a really great game and I suggest you play it. If you don't want the boo tactics to scare you, just be extra catious.

A few tips when playing Dead Space: If a necromorph jumps out in front of you, theres a very high chance that a second one has found his way behind you. So as soon as you kill the first one, check your back.

Also, theres a few necromorphs that appear dead while laying on the ground. An easy way to discover these is by using your kinesis module you get at chapter 2. If you use it on a normal corpse, the corpse will be lifted up, but if the necromorph is still, then it is alive.

Finally, many necromorphs are there purely to freak you out. They run across the hallway and jump into a nearby vent, or crawl around in areas where you can't shoot them and they can't get you. You can completely ignore these. They are only there to freak you out.

Now I've given you three helpful tips so go play one of the best games of 2008.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)23:23 No.46773275
I hate the people that come in to Dead Space threads and say, "Pfft it wasn't scary because all of the enemies were pushovers." You can tell they didn't play on Hard. The jumps in difficulty are bigger in Dead Space than they are in most games. Each difficulty has the enemies having twice as much health and doing twice as much damage as on the previous difficulty, and ammo drops from necromorphs at a lower rate with each difficulty increase. I am a difficulty junkie in games, and Hard was satisfyingly difficult for me on my first play through, although after playing through the game a million times Impossible is really easy for me.
