I've missed more than a decade for reasons that, if explained, would blow your mind.

    What have I missed?
Last time I was watching Ojamajo Doremi. It was OK, but too focused on "cute girls being cute".
My prediction was: Evangelion will open the doors to a renewed interest in science fiction and robots, and most successful anime and manga will focus on deep, thought-provoking plots and characters. I mean, anime fans are getting older and will become interested in more mature, intellectual content.

And for light-hearted series there will always be stuff like Slayers, mixing fantasy, comedy and action. I predicted this would also develop and become more mature.

    How right was I?

No, most succesful anime/manga nowadays focus on cute girls eating cake.

    Tell us your story, OP.

    >Evangelion will open the doors to a renewed interest in science fiction and robots etc etc
No, not really. But we have new Evangelion movies now.

    >I mean, anime fans are getting older and will become interested in more mature, intellectual content.
Nope, they are interesed in cute girls now, more than ever.

    >And for light-hearted series there will always be stuff like Slayers, mixing fantasy, comedy and action
There are shows like Slayers, but not that slice-of-life oriented. All the slice-of-life we get now is cute moe girls doing cute moe things.

By "eating cake" we mean...that, eating cake. It's called K-on!, it's a story about 4 (later 5) girls eating cake and drinking tea everyday.

Oh, they also play instruments, but we don't really see much about that.

    He's not even using slang.

There are many shows about cute girls being cute and doing nothing but eat sweets and whatnot.

Go look at K-ON, it's a show about a band but there is little music, though there is plenty of eating sweets.

    >>46486766
"Eating cake" as in "putting sweets in their mouths" and going "oishii" in a squeaky voice. You should be able to wrap your head around this.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)15:32 No.46486913
I think that Ojamajo Doremi is still in the process of being translated. There is far more moe/cute girls doing cute things, ranging from good (the ones focusing on cute things) to poor (the ones focusing on cute girls).

Evangelion hasn't opened anything. Gainax has gone on to make some really good shows (FLCL and TTGL being noteworthy) but sci-fi is still pretty absent. Ghost in the Shell got two full series to its name - Stand Alone Complex and SAC 2nd Gig - if you are interested.

Comedy seems to have headed towards the harem or psudo-harem. A lot of the stereotypical harem personalities have been found in most mainstream shows, and there has been a lot of blending of genres. A lot of shows end up with, say, a little cute girl or a female companion who acts like she doesn't like people when she secretly appreciates them, even when it wouldn't make much sense to do so - Gosick, for this season.

There are still some good anime being produced. The production level has risen, although I'm not sure the value of the stories being told is really that much better.

/a/ has gone to shit, has gone gay and is interested in trolling anything that isn't harem or shota. Just warning you now.

That was more in the direction of a cute little girl acting cute in a story where it really isn't appropriate. She has been locked in a library on a high school campus her whole life and will only talk to the main character - really? She is actually handled rather well for a character in those circumstances, it's the circumstances themselves which are completely rediculous (and they are only there to put her into the story, at that).

Kore Wa Zombie is an intentional parody of basically everything out there, so it's understandable. Dragon Crisis is a basic harem.

These things move kinda cyclical, actually. Following Eva, there was kind of a trend towards more serious or mindfuckery stuff in the 90s, but eventually it burned out and as the 2000's progressed anime went into more of a lighthearted and cute phase. At some point I imagine that people will get tired of transforming any random thing into cute girls and we'll see a new trend develop, although I don't think that's on the horizon quite yet.

SoL = Slice of Life, basically following the character as they go through their sometimes-wacky, not-very-dramatic lives. I honestly don't see the appeal, but I'm not 90% of the demographic.

Er, fap = masturbate with your penis.

NEET = Not in Education, Employment, or Training, meaning somebody who is unemployed and stays at home all day. It typically refers to post-teenagers still living at home and getting money from their parents to spend on junk.

Rough ride my friend, sadly "social networking" has replaced much of what you knew about the internet back then, Google has taken over search engine dominance from Yahoo, Geocities is no more, Clinton's cat Socks who used to host the White House for Children homepage died a few years back, 3DRealms, makers of Duke Nukem 3D spent 13 years on development for Duke Nukem Forever and ultimately folded, selling the rights to Gearbox to make, AOL is slowly fading away thanks to real broadband internet access, but their Instant Messenger is now independent of the program and is used more widely than ICQ or Yahoo Messenger.

Seems like so long ago for most of us here. Well, except the 13 year olds.

    OP here.
AOL was your problem, Americans. I'm Chilean.
That being said, everything else you mentioned blew my mind.
I was sad enough when they cancelled the game based on Socks, but now this google you mentioned told me the poor thing died!

Well, at least I have something to be happy about: This internet connection is fast as fuck!

No, I already told you, I was trapped on a refrigerator and last year an earthquake opened it. Two weeks ago they finished the unfreezing process.

No, this is cool. Like all good Sci-Fi, it makes us reflect on our current condition.
It's a classic story: An outsider trying to understand the world. As you explain your reality to this entity, you start to see your world from a new perspective, and maybe realize terrifying things that were always in front of you but never noticed before.
