222 KB Do you think Steam is a Trojan Horse economically? Anonymous of College Park,MD 12/30/09(Wed)20:40 No.45622030
The first time I got a game through Steam, it was Half-Life Deathmatch. But thanks to Steam's history of setting up periodic sales, such as this year's holiday sales: I ended up with currently buying about 21 games over a period of just two years.

The reason why I think Steam is a Trojan Horse, they expect you to buy games at the best time convenient for them. If you bought a steam-supported game via a brick-and-mortar retailer, it comes with steam, and even if you are not planning to buy a game electronically, you will.

Do you think Steam is economically a Trojan Horse?

Picture related, an actual Trojan Horse.

    In before, "meanwhile at Valve".

I CAN'T LIKE IT NOW BECAUSE IT MAKES ME SEEM LIKE I LIKE THE SAME THINGS OTHER PEOPLE LIKE AND I AM A PRETENTIOUS HIPSTER DOUCHETWIBBLER
    >> Anonymous 12/30/09(Wed)20:52 No.45622741
Let me make sure I understand your argument. You're saying that Steam is a Trojan Horse because they periodically reduce the prices for games so low that you are compelled to buy them. You have a problem with this because they can choose when to reduce these prices.

    Is that the gist?

If so, the answer is no. That does not make Steam a Trojan Horse.

The storefront side of Steam. You may not want to buy the games, but you'll end up with the games over a long period of time due to their periodic sales, such as this year's holiday sale.

Although they seem to worked their way onto a lot of peoples computers who play computer games, they aren't forcing you to buy anything from them. I guess its a little annoying that so much stuff comes packed with steam, but whatever. I will probably never buy their shit as I'm not someone who buys shit they dont want or need just because it seems like a deal.

Or in the case of Steam, the games. You just want to get one game, and then the other ones that you were not planning to buy, you get them anyway because they priced them cheap for a period of time.

    Thus the economic Trojan horse.

your metaphor doesn't quite fit. inside the trojan horse were a bunch of dudes about to rape you and your wives in the ass (but you guys dont even have girlfriends). steam is only selling games, that you don't even have to buy. i know i dont. its not even like they are selling opium like the british did to china. so fuck it, unless you are addicted to steam games like you are to opium i don't see the connection really. okay, they could be a trojan horse, but its like a boring trojan horse that doesn't do shit and just wants to sell you shitty games for cheap, (or the right to use the games, but w/e)
    >> Anonymous 12/30/09(Wed)21:22 No.45624688
No. You can't blame Steam for your purchase of games.
I'm not a fan of Steam, though I do like the idea.

But to counter your anecdotal evidence, I'll present my own. I buy games that come with Steam all the time, but I never use Steam, in fact I exclusively buy games from "brick and mortar" shops because my internet is shit. Because of this I don't plan to buy any games electronically any time in the near future (until the internet coverage in this country improves), and installing something like Steam is not going to change this.

By your OP you could say someone at the local McDonalds asking if you'd like fries and a drink with your burger is a "Trojan" if you said yes when you had originally only intended to buy the burger.

It's not so much a Trojan Horse with salesmen jumping out as it is you buying a regular horse and the merchants offering you membership to an Equine Club for free.

But steam installs on your comp when you get certain stuffs. Its like a required thing I didn't ever ask for or want.

    >> Anonymous 12/30/09(Wed)21:34 No.45625511
I don't think your analogy fits at all. And you have complete control over whether you buy games or not. So I'm going to say no. You're just dumb.

Are you a fucking idiot? Just because something is on sale doesn't men you are obligated to buy. There is absolutely zero pressure to buy anything. Unless, of course, you're an idiot.
