Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best works of satire in our modern times.

Many of those who play haven't looked into the details of the game, but they're there. The radio stations are well done, talk shows are hilarous (as well as commercials) and all of the advertisements reflect America's media garbage right now. Although most of it goes a bit over the edge, and isn't as subtle, you can still see some truth in the mockery of our society.

I feel that GTA IV gets no love in this respect because people see it as mindless violence generator. A lot of people just play it to kill everyone and see how far they get before getting killed (I admittedly do the same). Other GTA games take place in other decades, so it is a bit hard to relate to right now. But if you look at the intricacies of GTA IV, you will see a frighteningly accurate look of humanity, as well as what America has become. This type of satire on such a grand scale really hasn't been done before in a videogame, and I think Rockstar deserves some kudos for this.

Anyone else agree with me? Why?

    No.

It gets no love and respect because it takes all of the best parts of the game (the crazy Scarface-like over the top bits and pieces) and does away with them for almost no reason other than HURDURR GRIMDARK.

Saints Row 2 basically did the exact same game satire-wise but with worse graphics and crazy-ass gameplay and it's more enjoyable for it.

The whole game can be seen a semi-successful parody of American consumer culture.

Every thing you said op is completely true. Unfortunatly you have to understand that the masses where expecting a game to top San Andreas or saints row.
You have to admit though, the game definitly losses steam around the end.

Ok, first off, satire of American culture is nothing new or interesting. Oh wow, the conservative politician was gay all along, who would have fancied that? Oh, gee, the American dream is a false idea, my mind was just blown.

Only a fool complements every century but this, and every culture but his own. The GTA IV satire is over the top and cliched to hell, and quite frankly, is so blatant in it's message that the humor kinda dies, it's basically HURR DURR AMERICA SUCKS. Which would be fine if the game was fun, but no, the game isn't fun. It's a sad state of affairs when I have more options and more ability to do crazy shit in Saint's Row Two than in GTA IV.

TLDR: Satire of American culture is nothing new. A shitty game doesn't become a good game simply because it tries to have a "deep" cynical message to it.

    Yea.

Mostly I liked the theme to Niko's story which was the death of the American Dream.

I kinda wish the game wouldn't have given you an option to choose between roman and kate. Roman personifies the dream so it would've been more dramatic (as your more attached to this character) and it would've been symbolic.

Also Pegorini has no beef with you up to this point and Dimitri makes a better final boss.

OP here: I think GTA 3 was good, but I haven't played it since I was way underageB&... It seemed to try and flesh out the plot of Scarface more than anything, and Vice City even more so.

San Andreas is one of my favorites, but that might be because it had a somewhat nostalgic feel to it, being a 90's kid and all...

If you even go on the computer and surf the web in GTA IV, you'll find a new level of detail you haven't seen before. I feel like I can play it and say, "Yeah, I can kind of see this stuff happening".

On another note, the DLCs for GTA IV really bring it to life, as you look at everything from a different prespective, rather than just Niko's. It adds a whole different way of seeing things when the plots are connected, too.

    >Jeff, or Jeff the Cuckold (?-2008) in the credits, is a random character in Grand Theft Auto IV encountered in northern Algonquin, near North Holland. Niko Bellic encounters the erratically-behaving man standing across the street from his apartment, ranting and raving about how he suspects his wife of infidelity. Jeff asks Niko to follow his wife and her male friend and to take pictures of them so he can confirm her treachery. Niko does so, but in the course of which overhears his exasperated wife complaining about how her husband doesn't trust her to have purely platonic male friends, and so Niko mentions to the increasingly erratic Jeff that he doesn't think the picture necessarily proves her guilt.

    >Sometime later, Jeff calls Niko to meet him in an underground parking lot. As it turns out, Niko's attempts to calm him have failed, and the insane man has brutally murdered his wife in a jealous rage, and wants her body and his car dumped in the Humboldt River. The angry and exasperated Niko's task is made all the more difficult by the fact Jeff's wife's bloody body is clearly seen in the car, leading to the police chasing him as he makes his way to Northwood.

All of them have done it, VC did it but the state of affairs in the 80s as SA did it relating to the "Gangstas" of the 90s and was a subtle tribute to NWA. GTAIII was more modern, it had a great semi-melancholic atmosphere about it. If you were old enough when it came out you understood the subtle references and such a lot more.

Problem with IV is it got rid of a lot of cool stuff like the Rampages, Gun rewards at hide outs, haircuts and the like. It just felt too linear and story/graphics orientated.

If you want to bitch about not being able to play dress-up as much and not being able to pimp your ride, you are the exact kind of brainless idiot that SR2 was looking for in a target audience.

Too over the top? What the fuck are you talking about? Did you honestly play through the game? Ramping a dirt bike into a helicopter, secret government agencies that magically keep Nico out of prison, your girlfriend turns out to be a FBI operative watching you just on the off chance you'll come in contact with some drug dealer; the list goes fucking on.

Oh GTA4 was certainly more serious than it's predecessors. But it was only serious enough to suck all the charm out of the GTA world. I honestly felt like Saint's Row 2 was a more worthy successor to the GTA franchise than GTA4 was.

GTA IV polished off a lot of the smaller things and took some of the regular game mechanics out. I think that is why there is such a mixed opinion on it. Think about it; you will fly out of your windshield if you crash without a seatbelt on, but you can no longer enhance your stats RPG style. I like to see developers go in different directions, but stats don't seem to be very GTA.

GTAIV has a good narrative and stuff, but it did break away from the campy mindless fun the previous GTA titles provided

    Pissed people off bro

THE JOURNEY MOTHERFUCKER. That was the best fucking radio station, even though it only played like, 2 songs.

    No.

    Just no.

    GTAIV is shit.

    Combat was horrible.

Graphics were ok up close, but everything gets fucking fuzzy and pixelated from afar.

    Story sucked.

I never laughed once at the channels in GTAIV.

    The TV shows were decent.

    The online also sucked.

I would give this game 6/10, but I give it a 7/10 just because the time it took to make the city.

Oh and I guess GTA4's story was any better. With the plot holes, the sudden changes in personality, the fact Nico seemingly has no attachment to the game outside of cutscenes, the fact Nico said one thing than immediately does another.

Oh and complaining that a game has extra features that are completely oppositional and likable to others is akin to bitching about a restaurant carrying fish if you don't like fish.

GTAIV had only one real plot hole, its the scene where Niko kidnaps the chick. Aside from that he was surprisingly solid. Really the game was just too fucking long for its own good.

The Episodes fixes these problems and have much better narratives.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/09(Sun)02:08 No.45333231
I didn't have a problem with GTA IV. I LOVED it, even with the stuff they took out. Almost all I did for about a year was play free mode, which I still conside to be one of the best things in the game, especially on TBOGT. I have no respect for Saints Row 2, the aiming is shit, the handling on cars and bikes is fucking horrible, and the online multiplayer isn't good news. How am I supposed to enjoy a game whose simplest things were done badly?
    >> Anonymous 12/27/09(Sun)02:11 No.45333372
To be honest, I felt almost over saturated by GTA4's features. In GTA 3, VC and SA the only things you could really do were either missions, side missions, messing around in sandbox or radio. It was enough to keep you occupied and had some variety. In GTA4 though you have missions, side missions, side side missions, dating, NICO HOW ABOUT WE GO BOWLING, tv, radio, the internet, and hell of a lot of characters.

This really shouldn't be a bad thing... but I just found it a lot harder to care for the characters because there was just so much stuff going on with so many people... And at the same time It was like I felt bad for going on the main missions, because there was 30 hours of side stuff that I could be doing... GTA IV just felt like it was trying to be a lot of different games at once.

Because it's "original" and "quirky". Haven't you caught on yet? /v/ doesn't like anything serious. If it's not shot in technicolor and wacky, they spout the "mature games for mature gamers like myself" line.

    Michael Cera is basically /v/.

OP here, TBOGT is probably the best DLC ever. Reminded me of San Andreas a lot, too. The ending was really nice too.

And the diamonds; "Oh 3 million dollars fell in a garbage truck, lets give up."

The fact Nico and Patty's sister are deeply in love, yeah you can argue they aren't, but Nico takes her loss just as hard as he does Roman's so yeah.

Or how Nico murders 10 people or so in the Lost and never experiences any retaliation, hell they work together like best buddies later over selling the aforementioned diamonds.

And those are just the holes off the top of my head.
