When given the option of multiple characters though, I have one or two females. I have em for two reasons; Mainly cause I do get tired of seeing and hearing a guy over and over and over etc, and because I want to try ranged attacks. Nothing like a good jiggle from releasing a bowstring.

I think the reasoning behind this is because some people just like to stray away from the norm, they don't need something hyper-realistic. Females in games tend to represent this, however, developers often design the females in games to be some sort of "sexy hero" which in turn can make irl females make male characters because the women seem "unrealistic." When it boils down to it each person has a unique image of what a "cool character" looks like and they strive to appear as that in game. Some people like the burly steroid induced macho super men, while others may prefer a seemingly sly and devious rogue-like character and others naturally go for the "funny" race like gnomes or ratonga (in everquest II).

Yes, I have female characters in both WoW and in various Phantasy Star games.

In WoW, it is mostly because some of the male models I just can not stand. It also has to do with what I feel a characters backround is. My mage is female, only because I think it suits her, while I have a male rogue.

In PSU gender has an effect on stats, so gender is actually a little more of a reason on which stats I want the highest.

I generally consider the lore behind the race and class when I choose gender.

For example, when making a Night Elf, I consider that Night Elve society is divided by gender, with warriors and priests being predominantly female and druids being male.

And any Troll character I make is male, because females of the race weren't responsible for being much more than mothers until very recently.

Of course, some of the races, like Orcs and Draenei, appear generally progressive gender-wise and have no evidence of stratification by sex, making the choice an aethestic one.

I generally disregard the status quo lore addendums that Blizzard added in for the MMO saying that males and females of every race suddenly have every opportunity to succeed. Granted, adventurers by definition are people who don't belong in normal society and don't necessarily have to conform to those standards, but still.
