Why is it when you buy an FPS these days you're essentially buying a multiplayer game with a tacked on campaign?

Admit it: no one is hyped about Modern Warfare 2 for the campaign aside from a select few actual gamers. No one was hyped for ODST for the campaign, either. FPS games are being sold as multiplayer games; we don't see any FPS games as campaign only, or at least focuses on a satisfying core single player experience.

Considering I hate playing FPS online with Xbox kiddies and shit I'm a bit tired of it myself when the campaign only lasts 5 hours or less and felt watered down because most of the effort went to multiplayer

It's not just with FPS games. RPGs have grown into MMORPGs, any respectable RTS has a good multiplayer crowd, FPS is just born to have a multiplayer part. All we need now is Adventure games with multiplayer stuff Demon's Souls.

There WAS no story, the game was glitchy as fuck(I can make a list for you), the weapon selection was horrible and the fact you could only carry one and a shitty pistol(the good one rarely dropped) sucked something awful, there were a total of two types of enemies you fought through the whole thing unless you count those really rare occasions, the personalities were your standard burly badass marines with the token Cole Train, and it lasted no more than 4 hours. The bad guy, scholar Visari, voiced by Brian Cox, is probably the best dictator/shouting leader in video games that i've ever come across. He gives me goosebumps, when at the end of his speech he says "And they will know... That Helghan belongs to the Helghast". And he goes on about our children feeling the pain that they wrought on us. The game lasted upwards of 8, archetypal characters exist in EVERYTHING so that's like saying Mario had too much side scrolling, The weapon selection was fine, it had every category covered, and a flamethrower. We're not dealing with aliens here, there won't be needlers. The weapon system was fine, I don't understand how that could possible be a complaint. It's not an object that needs discussing. And there were at least ten different enemy types. Just because you weren't paying attention doesn't mean the game is bad.

And the story was that the Helghast had gone to far attacking vekta, and they needed to be taught a lesson and put out of their misery. The ISA got together and launched on all out invasion on their homeplanet, which ended up in more losses than they expected. The game goes on from their with an extremely dramatic beach landing in the vein of D-day, and a campaign that takes you through some of the most intense action sequences available on a console. At least until Uncharted 2 comes out. I won't say anymore, as the ending is kick-fucking-ass and I don't want to spoil it.
    >> Anonymous 10/05/09(Mon)15:06 No.39403496
The reason there is such a high emphasis on multiplayer is because gaming is now mainstream, and before gamers were once solitary people like myself who rarely went outside, we are now social and outwardly friendly people who can be very shy at times but will reall let out of our shells when we are around the right people. But nowadays everyone wants to get a game and show it to their friends. This results in wanting to play with them, which evolved into playing with anyone as long as they can play, which evolved into MANLY GRINDAN.

    >Make us a list then. I didnt see any glitches.

This was experienced during my first playthrough:

During either the first or second mission when you get in the tank and you're asked to blow up the enemy tanks, I do that just fine, and afterward they give warning of some enemy bomber and to take cover. I figure I was alright since I was in a tank, whatever, anyway the game starts to save and right afterward I get blown up and stuck inside the tank's debris. I didn't see my weapon, couldn't move or anything. I was just STUCK. So I restart from last checkpoint, and the same shit happens again. I restart again to try to move from the position, and it's futile, I get stuck in the tank every damn time and there was absolutely NO WAY out, so I had to restart the whole fucking mission.

During a later mission, I die right as the game begins to save, and it turns out it was saving right as I was dying, so when it went to restart from the checkpoint, it would loop my death every time, resulting in me having to restart the mission.

The voices would randomly cut out every time you picked up a new weapon or boarded a vehicle, or they would lag and repeat the same word 5 times before continuing their sentence.

I had a few other annoying experiences, but you get the picture. The game felt entirely unpolished and was an unsatisfying experience overall.

    >Sorry this isnt UT99 and you cant carry 12 different rifles.
Is it so wrong to ask a gun game to allow you to carry AT LEAST two different guns so you can form a strategy around what guns you're holding?

During the scene on the train where you had to blow up the tank in the distance was fucking annoying, because you had to drop your weapon for a rocket launcher to do it, and you could waste the ammo on the waves of asshole enemies coming at you so I died repeatedly and finally completed it by dropping and picking up the fucking weapon over and over again.

Breen was a fruit who made up letters to read to people. He was not intimidating, sort of just laughable, thinking about how such a pussy got his job. That's his thing though. That's why Breen is so cool. But Visari outdoes him in the shouting dictator category any day. Breen comes off as a pissy child everytime he turns on the mic.

These glitches I have yet to experience myself, to be honest they may just be isolated to you because of the way you played. I played the tank level just last week and got through it fine. And that saving right as you die thing isn't new to ANY game. It's happened to me in Halo, Half Life and Bioshock, to name a few I can actually remember.

The voice thing I don't remember, but could be possible, but to say the game is unpolished is ignoring ALL of it's merit. Have you seen it? Have you seen when the iron sight self shadows on to the rest of the gun? Are you being serious?

And what's wrong to ask a player to devise a strategy around ONE gun? You may have to swap out alot or you may just need to be good with the one gun, but it's not so different from Halo. It's not realistic to think a human being can carry a full assault rifle and rocket launcher on his back at the same time. Not to say the game is at all realistic, but it handles it's gameplay in a manner that I would call realistic.

I'm sorry, but looped deaths from checkpoints have never happened to me in any game aside from this game. The game had glitches that left it unpolished. You can defend it all you want, but it's what I experienced and it left a horrible taste in my mouth.

    >Have you seen it? Have you seen when the iron sight self shadows on to the rest of the gun? Are you being serious?
Aside from the terrible excuse for lip syncing, I felt it was a pretty game, yes. It was a little colorless, but that's to be expected from an FPS these days.

    >It's not realistic to think a human being can carry a full assault rifle and rocket launcher on his back at the same time.
Listen, kid, it's a VIDEO GAME. It's not supposed to be so realistic that would hamper the fun. I didn't like the fact that I couldn't have multiple weapons, I thought it was a downside to the fun that I could not switch between two weapons that I liked, what is wrong with that?

What kind of points are these!?! And all ships have some sort of shape or stylization, how do you know they were trying to make them look cool and it didn't just end up that way?

Humvees look cool, but I don't think it was because the military wanted to look smokin' hot when they drove up to the afghans. Tanks look kick ass, but again, it's not because they needed too. I'm sure there is some aesthetic influence on the design, but no so much that it out did the functionality.

Listen kid, it's a VIDEO GAME. It can be whatever the designers deem necessary. If they want it to follow a more realistic approach as far as movement and weight is concerned, it's THEIR DECISION. They decided that when you reload the camera moves, that when you shoot there would be recoil, that when your crouch there would be a second of immovability and head bob, that when you jumped there would be even more head bob and immovability. That's the angle they wanted, and if you don't like it, than boo for you, you should go play more resistance, but it's what they wanted, and what I like about it.

And play any PC FPS and you'll experience looped deaths. Hell any PC action/adventure/shooter.

I play a lot of PC shooters and action/adventure games. Never a looped death from saving. I've had situations where it saved at times where I was getting my ass fucked, but not to the point I had to restart THE ENTIRE MISSION. I was always able to find a way out of it. This looped a DEATH SEQUENCE and did not start you off at a point where you could recover.

    >It can be whatever the designers deem necessary.
Also, what the fuck are you even implying with this statement?

Of course it was their decision to only allow one gun, that doesn't mean I don't have to like it. You're defending it like a fanboy, anon. "OMG IT WAS SO ARTISTIC AND REALISTIC THAT THEY ALLOWED ONLY ONE GUN YOU SUCK AT GAMES IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT"

It was a design decision, if they wanted it that way because they felt it better suited the atmosphere and gameplay, than so be it. I can understand if you don't like a design choice like that, but had they not put it the game would have lost cohesiveness and focus, and would end up disjointed and not nearly as great as it turned out. Go ahead and hate the way the weapon system works, but at least understand it's necessary to making a full, focused product.

And how could you not have experience a full death loop? There have been rage threads where in green text the OP posts

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFffff. This is a common experience of PC gaming. It's one I'm proud to have experienced, it's like the barrel in Sonic 3, or the cheese in perfect dark, or the truck with mew.
