I've been playing Stalker Call of Pripyat for the last two days, totaling around 12 hours.

Here are some of my impressions of it:
-Easiest setting is significantly easier than in Shadow of Chernobyl, where a pack of dogs could kill you in 30 seconds.
-Making money is hard. You can't just hoard weapons and stuff and try to sell them for profit.
Traders won't buy damaged goods, and not all traders are interested in all goods.
-Feels much more lonely compared to Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl. Also, less campfires and guitar music, which is a shame because it really added atmosphere.
    >> Anonymous 10/01/09(Thu)16:41 No.39121198
-Very stable. It hasn't crashed once in 12 hours or so.
With the exception of weird sun shadows, I didn't notice any visual bugs either.
    >> Anonymous 10/01/09(Thu)16:42 No.39121246
    awesome
    >> Anonymous 10/01/09(Thu)16:44 No.39121370
-Very useful system of configurable shortcuts.
You can assign medkits, health bandages or various types of drugs to F1-F4.
-Blowouts are serious business. When the sky gets red, you die in a matter of seconds.
Good thing they always happen when you're near a shelter.

Nice info =) can't wait for this..
    >> Anonymous 10/01/09(Thu)16:48 No.39121627
-Notable absence (at least for me): the journal.
PDA only shows the map, and some useless statistics, achievements and message history. Some faction standings would have been nice too.

I hear you on that one. I thought the devs were scaling it back to 'around the loneliness of SoC', but there isn't ANYONE around.

Or... scratch that. There aren't many encampments. If you run into a fellow STALKER you can ask them to take you to their destination, which is usually a campfire, which is cool..

The STALKERs you do find are wandering around. I kind of like it. It looks more like they're hunting for stuff instead of patrolling.

I did this and it worked:

DX problem tiktaks? I've installed smoothly following the instructions from the pirate bay torrent (many thanks to its' author 'alfoznat')...

    "
Since a lot of people are having problems installing and know one wrote instructions yet i guess i will.

    1. Download 7zip (http://7-zip.org/) (the x64 version doesn't work download the x32 one)
    2. download demon tools 4.30. (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/downloads) (if you cant mount the MDS **** because you have the wrong version of daemon tools.)
    3. Mount the .ISO "STALKER_COP_PlayBay" and install it.
    4. Download the "Stalker No-DVD/Fixed Image" (http://m0004.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_stalker_call_of_pripyat.shtml)
    5. Extract it and run the "FIX.REG".
    6. Reboot windows.
    7. Mount the "STALKER.COP.PLAYBAY.MDS" Mini-Image ( With RMPS Emulation enabled in Daemon tools.)
    8. Play the game.
    9. And remember to seed.
    "

    Don't forget number 9 folks.
*Expects Mini's filters to rip the quote apart so...

Oh, and if you're running Windows 7, I had to run as admin/Windows Vista SP3 compatibility.

Let the Activedisk thing check for the disk first time you run.

    >>39121895

Some parts may not apply, because of different scene releases.

    1. Install 7zip from the folder "Utils"

    2. Mount the .ISO "STALKER_COP" in Daemon tools 4.30

    3. Install the game

    4. Run the "FIX.REG" from the folder "Utils"

    5. Reboot windows

    6. Open fsgame.ltx from the install folder of the game ( open it with notepad)

    7. Change the line:

    $game_data$ = false| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\

    to

    $game_data$ = true| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\

    8. Go to folder "Utils" and extract the gamedata folder from the "Stalker.COP
EnglisH Patch" rar into the main CoP directory

    9. Mount the "STALKER.COP.PLAYBAY.MDS" Mini-Image from the folder "PlayBay" (
With RMPS Emulation enabled in Daemon tools.)

Launch the game with Stalker-COP exe !!!

The system restart is mandatory. Either you do it the right way or you BSOD at the disk check.

well, I didn't play CoP, but I - and I'm sure I wasn't the only one - always felt that due to the unfinished nature of SoC, the PDA was mostly useless and buggy. in CS, most of the stuff was gone and replaced with faction wars stuff. so naturally now, there is few left to display in the PDA.

I could imagine some things, but they would mostly be useless/atmosphere, unless you include features that need alot of work and balance.

and another thing that some fans didn't like about the previous two installments was the quests. they were automatically generated, and lacked charme. so GSC decided to make all quests manually. obviously this restricts them in number. Both, because with quantity you need to invest more time/workforce and the individual quests lose their merit if thedevs start running out of ideas.

It seems that these two things were more of a concious decision.

I found a fat dick named Beard. I also just had some underhandedness: Space Yoda told me to ambush some tweens or something, and I said ok, then I talked to another guy who apparently knew the tweens, and offered me a sweeter deal if I helped him ambush the tween-killers. I think he was Freedom.

You need to go to the barge and pick up a bunch of the quests at the bar. They lead to other quests.

The weapon and item fixing/upgrading looks fuckwin. You agree to find the guy tools to help, which are required for advanced upgrades. It looks like a basic prerequisite for him to do anything involves you gifting him copious amounts of booze so he can go into some Jedi-trance to make my shit cool.

There still are randomly generated quests, like gathering artifacts for traders.

In Shadow of Chernobyl, the PDA contained a journal in which you would find details about your character, the missions.
There was an encyclopedia of the Zone, with its factions, monster, anomalies and artifacts.

Oh yeah, apparently I forgot to add this: You can sleep! Spend the night indoors, in a nice, warm bed, in a lit room.
No more wasting time waiting for the dawn.
As soon as it gets dark outside, this stalker gets in bed!

I am on the quest where you have to find two keys. I just found the document in the car. The bear english is confusing, where do I look for the keys?

The sleeping rocks. I also like the "love boat" all the STALKERS are running in the Creek. Feels a lot like some sort of survival advenchar fort with all the shops, information buyers/sellers.

    Inb4 Fallout 3 comparison.

one key is in a box in the jeep at the North end of the convoy, the other key is in another jeep, on the crashed portion of the bridge, South.

    My only question:

    How's the performance optimization?

Now the Love Boat theme is singing in my head.

But River City or whatever it was called in Fallout really was better. It felt much more alive, was bigger, and looked more impressive too.

The game is really well-suited to 1-2 hour bursts once a week if that's all you can manage. It's definitely not a 'play 15 minutes before bed' kind of thing. I highly recommend just playing when you can on easy and enjoying the STALKER-ishness over the often-sought difficulty.

    Generally very good.
I get little to no stutter, on 4gb of shitty DDR2 ram, a 2.53ghz E7200, and a HD4850 at stock clocks.
While I play at relatively low resolutions (1024x768, 1280x960, or x720, rarely 1600x1200) everything else is maxed out and the game still runs fine.
Can't say the same about Clear Sky.

Remember, that's the difference between STALKER and Fallout (among many others): STALKER is trying to appear desolate and sparse, like some guys just found a boat and moved some supplies into it, as opposed to F3's city-in-a-boat.

I can't get over how much better the shotgunnery is in CoP.

You heard the rumors about Oasis?
I think it's the place where the first Stalker ends, if you get the best ending.
I'm searching for it. Rumors say it's somewhere in Pripyat.
