It simply is no fun to be backstabbed, is my issue. With every other class it feels like if you played smarter you wouldn't have been hit by that rocket/headshot/sticky trap, etc, so its cool. But there's not much to do about getting insta-killed from behind by an invisible foe, especially for classes with a slower run speed than Spies. Then it's basically always random death time.

Why does everyone complain about Spies? They're (Seemingly) hard as hell to master, but once you've gotten really good at it, goddamn is it rewarding. It's not like a newbie could pick Spy right away and instantly be awesome.

Most people complain about spies because 90% of the time, they had a shitty spy on their team. You know, ones that do nothing but stand in one spot with C&D, panic when spy checked, go for frontstabs after being discovered, don't syncronize their saps on sentry guns with their approaching teammates. Watching those kinds of spies makes me rage HARD. And yes, spy is rewarding when done right, but when done right it makes the other team rage.
tl;dr, no matter what your skill is with the spy, someone is going to rage no matter what

With Snipers I can avoid their standard wide-open spaces, hang back until my faster teammates start pestering them, etc. If they hit me, I can shrug it off. With Spies, there is no safety. There is no strategy. It's just BAM! Suddenly dead, from most anywhere.

I don't mind playing Sniper, I just have yet to find a team that doesn't already have at least three. So instead I play a class I like that isn't over-represented already, such as Heavy or Medic. You almost never see a team with more than enough of those.
