There's a reason reviewers and people who have to be held accountable to their past published works very rarely say something is "the best they have ever seen/read/played/whatever". It's because, in all likelihood, at some point in the future they will play something even better. At that point they'll have to mention they were wrong before, and that THIS is the best thing they've ever played, which sort of takes away from the passion of their statement. And if this happens again, of course, it's not even relevant anymore.

On the other hand, I'm kind of tired of people saying "one of the best", which can be applied to any number of games that are "good", decreasing the impact.

I'll never understand a lot of you. I've beat the first Uncharted 3 times now and got all the trophies. Uncharted 2 isn't trying to be Heavy Rain or something, its an action game with amazing production value. Anyways I'm looking forward to it, Naughty Dog has never let me down.

One of the things Sessler did that I really enjoyed was when he called out all the console war bullshit. I really liked this review. I don't always agree with the man, but it does seem like Uncharted 2 is shaping up to be a great game. I enjoyed the first one immensely, so I'm sure I'll have no problems with this one. I own all the consoles and a decent PC and my favorite gaming system is my PS3. The reviewer inside of me rages a bit, the same way that it raged when GTA4 got a 10/10. That score SHOULD mean perfection. It should only be given to the video game that one day writes </games> on the end of the industry because it really would be the last game anyone would need. Completely devoid of any and all flaw, made of gold and will rise from the disk tray on the third day of release and lead humanity to the promised land.

Nowadays scores really just mean fanwankery. If enough fans and money sit behind a game, it must get a higher score. This has become the golden truth of the industry as reviewers and publishers get further into eachother's beds. Don't get wrong, this looks like a genuinely good game. I liked the roaming aspect, the gunplay looked great and I admit that I even laughed at the humor shown in some of the gameplay videos.

These review sites are getting this game A VERY LONG TIME IN ADVANCE. MUCH longer than most review sites can get their copies of it. They get a copy, make a write up, and release reviews and exclusives on it when their contract allows them to. Beating out the competition (being other reviewers who probably haven't even got their reviewers copy yet).

Do we even need to argue that reviewers are pretty much in league with big-name developers anymore? I thought we had this discussion back when GTA4 got 10/10 reviews, then the game came out and it started to drift back down into 9/10 and eventually 8/10 territory.

Goldeneye 007, could be called the perfect FPS, for the time. Now if you released the same game, it would get mediocre to shitty scores, even with a graphical upgrade. Because games evolve and change. Naughty dog took what was wrong with uncharted and made it right. Developers do this all the time. Of course the game is with flaws, however that depends on how you look at flaws.

For what uncharted 2 was trying to pull off, it's perfect, and next year a game will take what uncharted 2 has done, and improved, and that game will now be "perfect".

What 10/10 means is, at the current time, this is the best they can do with technology, and best they could do with improving game play etc etc etc. Next year, like I said, a game will copy, and improve on uncharted 2, and it will be better, but it'll get a lower score.

I actually think this is why video game players are so cynical and hard to please now, especially on /v/. If a game is amazing overall and then you begin to nitpick it will lead you to hating the game. GTA IV was awesome in my opinion and even though it had some flaws I didn't let those flaws completely change my outlook on the game as a whole. Not at all. It's helpful to search for flaws because when playing games released in the future you can identify when and how the flaws of previous games have been addressed. Its fine I understand. I actually hate it when my friends ask me if a game is good or not since my taste are much different from there's. I do dislike games but I also try to find some redeeming quality in a game. I guess that does make me a bit immature. I actually really enjoyed a game called Ski-doo Snowmobile Challenge. Of course it's possible to find things you dislike in a game that you still ultimately ended up liking. I have some fun with some pretty shittastic games on a pretty much weekly basis (trust me, I follow indie games). But in the end your criticism of a game is putting that game up against every other game you have ever played. It's ranking the game based on your experience. It's a heavily biased 360 station, but Sessler is the only one who will actually give good, in depth, well rounded reviews of PS3 titles.
