What's so great about Blu-ray? I really don't see the appeal.

I can understand when it comes to games, because it's the only option when buying PS3 games, but why would anyone opt to pay far more for the Blu-ray version of a film when they could just grab the DVD one?

For example, in this comparison photo Blu-ray obviously has the edge, but it's not like the bottom picture is terrible. Why would any average person, who doesn't have a lot of money to blow away, buy that version over the other one? The average movie is two hours long, and you probably won't watch it again for months. It seems completely pointless.

Hell, even Blu-ray piracy is a pain in the ass. Over 30 GB just for the average sized movie? That would take hours, even if you were downloading it through newsgroups. Not to mention the need for a Blu-ray burner if you don't want to watch it on your computer.

meh I guess if you already have a nice tv and a PS3 it makes sense. I doubt they cost much more then dvds (I havent really looked). But yeah I wouldn't go out of my way to get a blu ray movie. switchign from playing ps3 to wii is brutal for me because of how much the lower resolution bothers me (its sooooo blurry) but it never does for movies. I'm content with pirating dvd rips.

    Newsgroups aren't torrenting.

When I'm downloading something on usenet, it takes maybe 10 minutes for one of those 1GB Xvid movies, 30 minutes for the average DVD, and several hours for a Blu-ray film.
    >> Anonymous 08/27/09(Thu)09:31 No.36647408
Most 720p film rips are about 4.5 Gigs

While the full 1080p rips can be had for as low as 8.5 Gigs, of course I've seen them go up to about 27GB, and while I've never compared the quality between a 4GB and a 30GB version of the same film, the smaller files still come out looking fantastic. I guess they have to remove things like colour depth information, perhaps some sound quality, that kinda thing.

When I get a PS3 I'm gonnna buy a few of my favourite films on Blu ray just to have a look.

People are not able to tolerate anything but bluray are picky bastards.

I could watch a film in grainy streamed quality, or in black and white if I had to. The meaning of the film is still there, and as long as I'm able to make out what's going on in the film, it's not a problem. Spoiled little brats.

I feel the same exact way.i've never seen any problems when watching my regular old dvds. If I started watching blu ray all the time, I would probably end up not being able to go back. The way I see it, dvd is still the best quailty (for me). because I personally have never watched a bluray movie to compare.

The change from VCR to DVD was a good one for obvious reasons. bluray however, is just a slight visual improvement.

I'm one of those guys who gets really picky when it comes to playing games on an HDTV, but I don't give a shit about movies.

My Wii is probably the best example of this. When I first got my Wii and plugged it up to my HDTV I couldn't stand it. The image was all stretched and every game looked like someone just shit a bunch of pixels on my screen, so I went out and got the HD Wii cords and it helped a bit.

Movies though? I could watch a blurry streamed film on that same HDTV and I wouldn't care. It's not like you have to actually interact with a movie, because you still understand what is going on from the voices and blurry bodies.

the jump from VHS to DVD was significant because it was a transition from analog (which deteriorates, is more bulky, and requires more effort to watch/use) into digital (which fixed all of those problems).
