    414 KB Wheelchair's Civil Video Game Discussion Thread Wheelchair !Wheely/5as 06/19/09(Fri)11:57 No.33083780
Jeez, I haven't made one of these threads in who knows how long. Way overdue.

Yesterday was a pretty empty day, so I spent it playing old NES games with my little brother from the emulator on my softmodded Wii. We played stuff like Megaman 3, Balloon Fight, River City Ransom, Battletoads, and Excitebike. Hell, he even kept playing after I had to do something else. And he asked me "Why is it that older games are more addictive than newer ones?"

Why DO you think that is, /v/? Or, in other words, in what ways does nostalgia become justified? Because we also fiddled around with a fair share of games that we used to like that were just plain bad, like some game that was Dragonball, but with all the DB references removed. Do you think that there's something to nostalgia, or do you think that it's just clouding our judgment of a game?

Personally, I do think there's something to older games. I have no problem picking up an old Megaman game or Punchout and just playing it for a couple of hours, but there's only a few current gen games that give me that effect nowadays. What qualities of older games make them easier to pick up and play over and over, and what qualities do you think held them back?

Or, if you don't want to talk about that, why not discuss the games you're currently playing/looking forward to? I've been messing around with Monster Hunter Freedom 2 lately. Can't wait for Unite, and I just got to G rank the other day. Also, thinking of getting Prototype and The Conduit as well.

tl;dr: Video game civil discussion thread.

Older games focused on replayable, non-story-based arcade gameplay.

Hence, they are able to be played over and over with the same level of enjoyment.

I mean even Nell is on there, fuck yes

Also, speaking of games I'm playing currently, that would have to be FF9.

Also, I can't wait for Golden Sun DS.

Loved Prototype, still loving it now. Very satisfying and deliciously evil. Was looking forward to Darksiders: Wrath
of War but I think the release has just been drastically pushed back. Wasn't it due out soon?

But there are some older games that are story focused that I have no problem replaying. I mean, every time I decide to pick up Final Fantasy VI again, it's always just as good as the times before it. For the most part, however, you're right. I can never get tired of replaying Megaman 2 or 3.

    >>33083813
No need for that. If I said something you disagree with, atleast say as much.

I think I only got a few hours into FF9. What I played of it was good, I really should go farther into it. Also, fuck yes, Golden Sun DS.
    >>33083894
There's been so many Prototype vs. inFamous threads nowadays, I really want to see what all the fuss is about. Some people say Prototype is awesome, while others say it's so so, so I think I might rent it first.

Never thought it was. There was just a lack of quality threads on /v/, and I used to make threads like these all the time, so I thought I would so we could get some good, video-game related discussion going.

How about you? What've you been playing lately that you've enjoyed?

Basically, they have no serious depth.

Whether you think this is a good thing or a bad thing is up to you. And no one says you have to choose between them.

But fundamentally, if you had to choose, I think you're a fucking moron if you're going to ignore all standards of meaningful progression in a medium and almost arbitrarily prefer the old ways, which are shallow at their core.

Tetris and Pacman for instance. People have huge hard-ons for these and become addicted. To what fucking end? I have never enjoyed these games for more than 10 minutes. They offer you fucking nothing. For some, you may get a little bit of a "high", so to speak, but when that fades you are left with nothing.

Starting a conversation now qualifies as a blog post?

    >>33083901

There's always the off-chance of nostalgia goggles. Additionally, back then the genres were very defined, and there was really only a core audience. Their appeal back then was only to appeal to the core audience and make a fun experience. But I don't want to bring "CASSUALLS" into this, so take this as you will.

It's def worth a rent at least. You could probably blitz through it in a rental period, but I'm having fun in the free roam between each mission, picking fights with the military and just being a general murderous nuisance.

If you ever played Hulk: Ultimate destruction then it's like a violent version of that. Or GTA4 + Wolverine Origins.

Oh, no, you're totally right. Let's get another thread in here about how the PS3 has no games, how Natal is revolutionzing everything or another unfunny comic.

Get the fuck out of here.
