I don't really understand this. I keep hearing people mourn the death of the Dreamcast so much, but I honestly don't understand why since I've seen many Dreamcast games ported to the other consoles since it's death. Doesn't that means that the other machines had the power it had and that whatever was going to be released in the future for that machine, probably just got released on the other consoles?

If SONY died, would Final Fantasy stop getting releases? I think we'd see all the next gen ones on 360 and the remakes and Chronicles/Tactics kinds on Wii/DS.

I honestly don't get it. Then again, I never got my hands on a Dreamcast, I am probably missing something that's painfully obvious.

tl;dr: Why do people mourn the Dreamcast so much?

Its marketing strategy was horrible, though, not to mention its timing in the console race.

Dreamcast had some pretty obscure titles that were far advanced for their time to most people. The 4 controller ports encouraged multiplayer in the DC's library and there were a lot of great games to play with friends. Also, Capcom made a ton of really killer titles for this system, and although they've been ported, the controls will always seem better on the first system you played them on. Also, it was easy as shit to pirate with a boot disc.

These are a few of the reasons I mourn for DC.

The fact that people were possibly still skeptical after the serious failures Sega had definitely didn't help matters, either. (Although I'll still contest that the Saturn was a solid, if overlooked system... but it was damn hard to program for.)

You're not going far as to say all that. Frankly all of that is fact. Not to mention supporting mouse and keyboard for games like Q3A, Unreal Tournament and PSO.

Playing top quality console and PC titles with a console that could browse the internet. How are those that had one not supposed to continue loving it?

I think the ps2 is way over rated, if you look at its 10 best games, I would take the GC's 10 best games, any day.
    >> Anonymous 05/28/09(Thu)10:52 No.31763160
So from what I see here the Dreamcast made the standard of what a console should be, much like SNES did with the controller. It seems that all that killed it was... bad marketing? Really?

What the hell? After making the perfect machine and noticing this is all that was killing you, I'd think about getting back into the game and actually fixing such a simple flaw!

Too bad all that SEGA seems to make nowdays is a thousand attempts at Sonic games with terrible success...

I love the dreamcast, but I'm not beyond its faults:

Seriously, the controller. Who puts the goddamn cord in the middle? Awkward.

Great games, but...most of them were arcade ports. Arcades were still relevant at the time, so most people felt they have played them before. And other games were ports from different systems.

Poorly utilized online, but since it was first, we can let that one slide.

Not as much support as other companies had.

    Etc.

Phantasy Star Online back when it was free.

Back before 2D fighters were viewed as antiquated or retro.

Only afew titles ever got ported some were remakes while others were half-hearted ports years after everyone forgot.

The thing that fills me with rage is how those ports were scoughed at. Apparently they were to good for the what sega had.

What was awesome with the Dreamcast is the variety in multiplayer game.

It was "multiplayer" in the "arcade" sense, not in the "casual" one. It had a shitton of 2D fighting games, quite a few 3D ones, and 4-players GOOD games. Nowadays, if you want a 4-player game on console, it's either with retarded party games or generic fps/sports game.

The dreamcast was a magic console, but it failed because people are dumb and wouldn't give Sega a second chance after the Saturn.
Also Sakura Wars 3 coming out too late.
And, well, bad marketing, but that's a given.
