In the games, pokémon are pretty much all the animals there are. In the anime, there are other animals for some retarded reason (such as non-pokémon fish, worms etc.). I think it's just the people making the anime being idiots.

The biggest question I've always had about Pokemon, is if you lived in the Pokemon universe why the hell would you do any job other than be a pokemon trainer?
