They haven't ruined anything, but they've changed a lot.

Most of the complaining about them is due to how imbalanced the game suddenly becomes with every update, but it's always quickly fixed. I think the biggest complaint was the backburner, and that was because it took Valve a fucking month to finally cave to pressure (apparently most of Valve mains Pyro).

Demoman requires actual skill while defending himself now. He still pretty much does the same things he always does. His tactics in a fight are the same, he just dies a reasonable amount now.

I feel mouse+keyboard makes it easier, not that it is easy on itself. I've watched and played a bit with the Xbox 360 controller, and the feel when you are looking around is horrible.
