Ok FFXI kids, I need some help.

I recently downloaded the trial to see whats so awesome about it (heard its great from select few of you kiddies and some friends) also I bought it when it first came out on the PC but never could play it due to a shitty computer (it somewhat ruined my childhood; was huge into FF and MMORPGs at the time, shit would've been cash)

ANYWAYS so I made a Mithra and now I have no fucking clue what to do.

I accepted one mission to talk to some faggot in the Zerauhn Mines (spelled something like that) and when I go I can't find shit also some kid gave me a quest to recruit some kids with this wildcat medallion.

What the fuck. I know this is an older game so it doesn't push you in the right direction at the start like newer MMOs nowadays, but fuck.

What am I suppose to do

What do I need to do right now

Should I just drop these missions/quests and go grind

Where do I get new skills/spells

Are the random shit mobs drop like wings and crystals significant to anything or just junk to sell?

Where do I get better gear outside of buying it and if I'm suppose to buy gear rather than find it, where can I get some damn gil
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)04:37 No.31183637
    1) Go grind up to level 10 at least, if not 12 or 13. If you're a white mage, stopping the grind at 8 or 9 is okay for a mithra I guess.

    2) At that point you can party up with two or three others and do some of the early quests and missions in your region, some are repeatable.

    3) Find someone in the area willing to teach you how to play the early game. There are tons of vets that are only playing these days just to help out the new people. Also, find your sever's major message boards at allakhazam and other websites like that.

    4) Save up crystals and ask around about how to make money or fame with them. Trust me, keep them all and sell high, or use them on the quest crap you'll learn about. When you get stronger, they get harder to find. As for other items, ask around at the auction house about the worth.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)04:38 No.31183649
    FFXI fag here.

Yeah, you have absolutely NO DIRECTION.
To me, that part of the game is really like a console RPG, you just have to speak with EVERY FUCKING NPC.

Also, you will want to check ffxi wiki, it will help you out like hell.

Basically, you grind until you're strong enough to completed quest/mission.

You buy and sell most thing at the Auction House.

Crystals are incredibly importants, you need them for every crafting job. Don't throm them away.

FFXI really takes lots of time to fully understand it (I still don't understand half of what my linkshell is talking about), but it's really rewarding endgame.

    OP here

Also when does the story come in? I've seen some videos where there are cutscenes and what looks like boss battles.

Story comes from missions. You can get those at the gate guards, but you should be at least level 10 before starting.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)04:42 No.31183725
80-90% of your time should be spent grinding for EXP. Use the little book outside town to help get to level 10 faster. Once you get to level 10 head to Valkum Dunes and get a party. Don't be afraid to ask for advice there.

You get new skills by leveling up. New spells can be bought in town at the auction house, and some low level ones can be bought cheap from NPCs.

Most of the stuff dropped from enemies is junk you should sell. Crystals are used for crafting and missions, but you still might want to sell them because when starting out you are going to need the gill.

Buying from the AH is the best way to get gear. You can craft your own, but leveling up crafting takes a lot of time and money so I wouldn't recommend that yet.

    This sentence is somewhat confusing

So what level should I start buying gear from the AH and get out of my shit starting gear.

Since I'm level 2 it seems I can kill 2 mobs then I have to press H to heal. The healing downtime takes not a long time but enough to get under my skin somewhat. Does the downtime decrease over time or is one big factor of the game killing a mob or two then healing?

And when can I get a secondary job

    Subjob is level 18.

"The book outside" is the field manual next to the town gates. Once an in-game day you can get a list of mobs from it to kill, like 4 bees and 6 six worms or something. After you finish, you are rewarded with a decent amount of gil and exp, as well as tabs, which you can trade for buffs like regen or refresh, which last an hour.
The refresh will decrease your downtime considerably, as you can just heal yourself by casting Cure and then get all of your MP back without having to rest.

I'd intermittently do quests and grinding at the early stages because they can net you a nice chunk of change to buy stuff with. Quite a few quests are repeatable and you will be killing the mobs that you need for the quests anyway. Don't forget to update your equipment either at the store or the auction house.

You get spells from a shop, drops, or the auction house.

FFXI's storyline is great, it has a fantastic world, it's very pretty to look at, and yes, the community is a step above WoW's (not as much as some of you make it out to be, but it is better). But dear gods, the gameplay in FFXI is dated and flawed to the core.

Most relics are merely upgrades but Mandau is different. In the hands of a well equipped THF it really does improve your damage output by an order of magnitude. There's simply no other dagger that is even close to it.

Aegis (shield) is the same way, turns a PLD into a brick wall (50% block rate and max damage reduction on blocks, -25% magic damage received)

They've managed to hold on to 500-600k subscribers in the face of the WoW juggernaut why would they try to make yet another WoW clone that will probably fail like every other WoW clone before it instead of sticking with the formula that has worked for them?

Nobody is going to successfully make the next WoW because the casual MMO market segment is already spoken for. They play WoW and are unlikely to switch to another MMO unless it's WoW2.

Do you honestly enjoy having to carry around 6 body pieces that are sidegrades just because they're all situational? Why can't we have better all-around gear than king gear by now?

I have a handful of 75s, but here's an example:
    My Thief carries:
    Rapparee Harness (cap acc)
Dragon Harness+1 (ws Shark Bite/Mandalic Stab)
Hecatomb Harness (ws Dancing Edge/ Evisceration)
    Scorpion Harness+1 (evasion/solo)
Mirke Wahdecors (tp w/o cap acc)
Homam Corazza (tp/meat ws Dancing Edge)

Now if I had Skadi body, I could trim this list by exactly one, making ZERO ROOM in the process.

    Bard is kinda boring.
Any race can be a decent Bard.
White Mage and Ninja subjobs are necessity, some HNMLS will require Black Mage subjob too, to land Elegy on bigger monstarz.

Basically you'll be Bard for everything if you level it, so I can't honestly recommend levelling it.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)06:29 No.31186084
THF needs full homam and full heca to compete. With homam + turban and 5/5/ heca I parse within a few % of all but the most pimped out SAMs.

SAM is basically a noob-proof job since SE did the 2H buff and then followed up with additional SAM buffs.

Tachi: Gekko gets a 2.0 attack bonus and like +50 Accuracy. Because of this SAMs can just gear all STR on WS while ignoring attack and accuracy and still be almost assured of hitting and have capped attack on almost any mob just by holding their weapon.

If this sounds like total bullshit it's because it is.

You have your Primary and Secondary.

Your secondary is 1/2 your Primary, even if you leveled it higher before (and you'll want to).

For instance, when I first started I picked Warrior. I leveled to 20 (at 18 you can do a quest to allow you to set a secondary). Well at that point, all I had above 1 was Warrior, at 20. So I go and pick another job. Monk. Now I can set Warrior as secondary.

So Monk/Warrior. Every time I hit an even level while Monk is primary, my Warrior level increases.

Mandalic Stab has really helped THF out in endgame stuff though. It has lower maximum potential damage than Shark Bite or Dancing Edge but the attack boost it has means it scales well on high defense mobs so for example you can do 800 on demons in Xarcabard where before with Shark Bite you were lucky to break 400.

And being a single hit WS if you stack it with SA or TA the offhand hit when dual wielding as well as any multi hit procs will land with 100% accuracy.

Bard is basically casting the same spells over and over for extended periods.

If you level a melee job you really like, but you have Bard, you might not get to use that melee class because the melee to any other class (tank/healer/mage) ratio is retardedly unbalanced.

So if that aspect of bard is unappealing, you might not want it as a first job. But it sure is the fastest way to get XP/merits/gear.

Look here all of you who wants to play FFXI. Don't, it's nothing but a huge and I mean HUGE grind. This game doesn't take skill and there is no way to mesure skill in this game and PvP is laughable. In fact, PvP is pretty much dead on all servers and the only way to gauge a player is by their gear.

Also, there is no real progression. You stop at 75 and then you get side grades to marginally make your toon better.

Also, the developers obviously don't play their own game and are stuck in their own little world. Time verus reward is one thing they'll never get. Also, they enjoy pissing off and torturing their players with gimmick bosses and convoluted methods to beating said bosses.

I always go to events as what's needed, not what I want, because I want to help my friends get nice things and enjoy the game, not because I'm some faggot that boohoos everytime I can't come as my favorite job to something. I simply advised that if that was unappealing, to not level bard as a first job.

And good luck with a startup "shout member" shell these days, if you aren't in something established you're nearly guaranteed to flop.

    Any besides Galka.

Elvaan's make a good WHM only beacuse of their already staggering MND which improves the healing spells. With HP->MP they can get a decent pool of MP while having the HP to survive an AE attack.

Taru's have huge mana pools but weak health pools.

Mithras and Humans are basically all rounders when it comes to WHMs.

Technically NIN and PLD but it's not like it's terrible. I've healed many successful Taru NINs and PLDs.

    Casters -> Melee/Ranged -> Tanks

Best to Worst. But the Worst isn't that bad.

That's mostly subjective, but taru excel at mage classes and do slightly poorer than others at melee classes.

Just do what you like, fuck what anyone says, just don't have retarded gear (at least TRY to have decent things, if you're willing to grand to 75 you can farm) or play like an epileptic lemur and you'll be fine no matter what you do.

Debatable, White Mage is the best healer for anything that's going to be a fight longer than 10 minutes such as some high level NMs, but Red Mage and Scholar have more self-contained ways of regaining MP and don't require support from a red mage or bard, making them superior healers for merit parties or nyzul isle and other things where you're not taking as much damage because they can also provide the party with other buffs that white mage can't.

Race is also a tad debatable, taru have the most MP so they can throw out more cures than other races, but they have significantly lower HP and run the risk of dying to an aoe attack or if they pull hate. Elvaan have more HP and more MND and VIT than other races, meaning each individual cure restores a bit more, but their MP pool is the second lowest in the game.

Personally, I'd say Taru white mage just because it's a fucking endless pool of MP to throw out, but really, race shouldn't be a factor in picking your jobs, competence in your job goes a lot further than slight racial benefits

Galka have higher VIT but lower MND, VIT is a very very weak modifier on cure calculations in comparison to MND.

When I said "MND and VIT" I was classifying them together as cure modifiers, not individually as stats and galka place much lower than elvaan on the scale of cure modifiers, on top of having an even smaller MP pool than them.

Stop grasping at straws for no point at all.
