You know, in my experience, the flaregun is only useful for targeting snipers who don't see you coming--which is very few of them. Out of all the classes, Pyro is the most obvious. He's wearing either a bright red or blue jumpsuit, for God's sake.

The Backburner, properly employed, is a fucking surgeon's tool. Heavies go down in about two seconds, maybe three with overheal. Takes snipers out in half a second.

Let's not forget the benefit of the Axetinguisher, now! Pyros working in concert with those weapons are a holy fucking terror.

I rarely use the "poofer". My impulse is to dodge a rocket, not try to catch it, even indirectly. While it's impressive to nail a Soldier with his own ammo, I'd rather conserve what I have for sneaking up on groups and igniting them.

For me, it depends on the role I'm doing and where the enemy is on the map. If I'm defense and it's the first cap for the third stage of Dustbowl, I'm probably going to use the Flaregun just to get people to run back more often and the Flamethrower to push back Ubers.

Though, I could use the Backburner so that I can rape whatever runs for the point when they pass by the bunker.

I often switch between unlockables, depending on the situation.
enemies pushing through our sewers on 2fort? Grab the backburner, jump over the battlements and enter via the water for some sneaky flamings. Everyone gathered round a dispenser while trying to hold off the enemy? Switch to kritskrieg, the dispenser + the medigun should handle most of the damage and we need to slaughter the enemy ASAP.
Team full of medics? Drop the sandvich and pick the shotgun back up, I clearly won't be needing to heal myself any time soon.
