I think making a game where you play as a terrorist is a great idea;
more as a social commentary than anything else. Your character would
have justifiable reasons for being a terrorist (parents were killed by
Israeli military or something), while the other members would have
varying reasons themselves. Some would actually live up to the
terrorist stereotype - crazy, fanatical, hateful, ignorant - some would
join because they have no other way to survive, some would join just
because they want to, as a time magazine article recently explained,
'see the world.' You'd go around doing terrorist things (mainly
fighting the Israeli/American militaries; a game promoting the death of
civilians wouldn't be sold anywhere), planting bombs in government
buildings, ambushing convoys, etc. But, throughout the game, you would
be presented with moral conundrums. Other members would talk about the
justness of their violence. Your character's best friend in the group
would be one of the biggest denouncers of the groups' actions, but he
would explain that he has no other option but to do them, for fear of
being targetted by the group after leaving it. The last cutscene would
tell you that your best friend has been ordered to be a suicide bomber.
He would come to you, frantic, saying he needs to leave (he has a wife
and kids, whatever). Your character, who has no family to speak of, and
who has become disillusioned and bitter, formulates a plot for them to
switch places, leaving your friend to go free (the group thinking him
dead). The last scene would be your character walking into a building.
The noise of the crowd would slowly grow quieter, until all you hear is
your own heartbeat. The screen fades to black. Then an explosion.
Credits roll. Goddamn, just imagine the controversy a game like this would stir up.
