Pokemon are an alien species that can take on aspects of its environment and change into hundreds of subspecies. They invaded earth and when on the brink of destruction humanity engineered a mind control device from nuts, and then eventually a mass produced synthetic version, to combat the menace.
Only a fraction of humanity remains and now lives in a feudal system.

That's why technology is so schizophrenic, with one elevator in a whole region half the time but mind control space compression technology costing only $5. That's why different pokemon can breed with each other. That's why every pokemon sounds so fucking dangerous in its description.

pokeballs, during gold and silver pokeballs they said they where originally created from acorn like objects which where hollowed out and then tinkered with to catch pokemon.
