Speaking as an American, I don't understand what's the obsession with shootan and sports games. Maybe they don't view vidya as a medium for storytelling or adventure, and instead take to other mediums like books or movies to fulfill that. I think NoA has some sort of hatred for the series.

-First they translate the NES Mother, but then they choose not to release it.

-Then they release Mother 2/Earthbound with little fanfare or much advertising on TV. Seriously, I didn't even know it existed until years later.

-They re-release the GBA ports of Mother 1 and 2 in Japan, but they do not bring it over despite having the fully translated version available.

-Then they release Mother 3 in Japan and they don't even try to release it outside of Japan.

-Finally, there is the virtual console version of Mother 2 in Japan. They even took it out of Brawl statesite for the demo section.

Granted, NoA's stance on games has always been pretty bad, considering they won't even give it another chance despite it being released at a time where RPG's were not common and many people did not know what to make of it. I think many more people would try it if they released it on the DS as a collection because of the Smash Bros series.

EarthBound didn't take me very long to beat, but neither did Mother 3. I didn't spend very much time grinding in the game to get those stupid super weapons, though. I also skipped a few side quests, but I did that in Mother 3 too. I actually got stuck in a few spots during Mother 3, I just went through EB like it was nothing, though.

I always used to rent it every time I went to the vidya store when I was a kid. I remember playing it and pressing the B button while I was in Ness' room in the beginning. I pressed B while I was facing the table in his room. The money menu came up, and I thought that it meant that the table thing was somehow his money storage. So so many years ago.

And to this day, I've never beaten it. I refuse to. It's something special to me, and I never want it to be over. And if I never beat it, in a way...it is never really over.

I always get to the final battle with giygas, get to where I have to pray, and then...shut it off.

Actually, Earthbound didn't sell all that poorly in America. It's just, Mother 2 was a huge blockbuster and they expected it to do as well in America. Instead it sold pretty mediocre for a couple reasons:

1. Bad marketing campaign. "This game stinks." That was the tagline. I am serious.

2. Huge box. It came packaged with the Player's Guide, and was more expensive to boot.

3. Lack of brand recognition. EarthBound? What the fuck is that? What's it about?

What they should have done was just manned up and released Mother stateside. They were so close, it was even fully translated.
