nah, it helps a LOT though, when you're warning of spies in the area and such. I resisted for the first couple of months and finally buckled with a $12 Rosewill headset from newegg. I felt like an idiot for a while, but it's made the game more fun for me.

Also, you get some good jackassery in voice chat once in a while - people singing, etc. and it's fun to be able to contribute.

also, re: mics, I'd say you only really hear maybe 5 people on a side on the mic in a 16-per-side match, if that. So a lot of people don't have 'em or don't talk much.

The game moves pretty fast, though, and it's nice to hit V, say some shit, and keep going rather that stopping to type out "there's a spy by the first control point" or suchlike.

I main medic, and it certainly helps for me at least, but yeah, with most other classes, particularly spy/sniper, it can become very much a single-player game almost.

lets you switch weapons with the mouse wheel. Essential.

Medic is a good first class - hang around and heal people with the red cross word balloons over their heads, while you watch how they're playing that class.

Pyro's easy enough to start with - you have a 10 or 15ft flamethrower. Hang around near corners, foompf. Not useful in open areas.

Soldiers shoot the same rockets that have been in every game since forever. Slow to reload tho.

Engineers take a minute to figure out but are always welcome.

Blatantly this. It's so much fun too - in my opinion, far better than getting your arse handed to you as you try and work out what you're doing with the other classes. At it's simplest form, all you need to do is run around holding leftmouse down and pointing at your team mates who call for help (though there is rather more to it than that).

I had so much fun doing this I never really bothered with the other classes.

Well, Heavy's good, too. He has the best lines, also--in-game, hit C and then 3 and he sings sometimes.

Eventually, you want to try all of them, if for nothing else but to see how to play against 'em.

I just picked Soldier, Pyro, and Medic as good starter classes. Every class in the game is pretty fun.
