Bad design, bugs and bad hitboxes were the only reason old games were hard. Correcting all of those bugs and shit ridden cluster fucks would immediately make them 100 times easier.

Bad design and bugs make the game more in depth and better.

    Like CS and Tribes.

    I agree with OP
go back and play all your old NES favorites that were "soooooooooooooo hard" when you were 8. Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, all of that. You'll burn them through today because you've been playing games for at least a decade now.

Mother fucker, Mega Man 1 is still fucking hard, and so is Mike Tyson's punch out and a bunch of other early shit.

Certainly reaction time has improved with age as well as other cognitive abilities, but they were certainly a lot harder. Primarily because IF YOU RAN OUT OF LIVES YOU STARTED THE FUCK OVER
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)13:40 No.30376830
You're right about most points, but the greatest era of gaming was 1997 -> 2003.

Game design was its peak and pandering to casuals and non-gamers was at a minimum.

99% of memorable games came out during this period and their names were milked from 2003 onwards. That's not to say that there haven't been any good games since (there has) but nothing that even begins to compare.

savestates don't count and TMNT will still kick most player ass even today and regardless of your age.
Also this generation is spoiled with help for any games; we didn't have gamefaqs back then. Only whever we could find in magazines/books.

This is actually one of the closest things to "traditional" gaming there is. I'm not going to bother explaining myself because you wouldn't listen anyway. Halo on legendary is also too hard for me.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)13:42 No.30376914
Games back in the time were hard and it was almost impossible to finish them in one try.

Games today are so easy, you don't even need to do that fucking boss 5 times because you can kill him when you fight him for the first time.

The point is that you have to play them again, right now.
You are remembering what they were like when you first played them.

And if you ran out of lives you didn't "start over" in Mega Man, you were allowed to continue infinitely. You also had codes in Punch Out, and Tyson is the only really challenging fight.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)13:45 No.30376989
Bullshat, I'm currently playing both old and new games, and the old ones are generally much harder. It's also a lot more trial and error, with less room for mistakes.

    >Games had to have cheap ways to kill you back then or else you'd just breeze right through them on only one credit.

Fixed. 99% of games in the late 80s and early 90s were arcade ports or games designed in the same vein. They're designed to suck the change directly out of your pockets.
