Try and find a class that you like to play as. If you just switch classes constantly you'll get angry and ragequit and never end up being good at anything. Not to say you have to play as one class forever, but try and get a afavourite.

Start off as a Medic, even new players can be a credit to the team if they're a medic. That way, you can watch other better players when they play as the different classes, giving you an idea of how to play those classes.

Click on people until they fall over.

Beginner? Play Pyro. Seriously, it will make you feel good and you'll be able to do your part on your team.

Watch some tutorials as well.

When I first started I always Spy. Then I moved on to Pyro, and now I main Engineer.
You should do that too. In that order.

Play every class for a few hours to get the hang of them
Being a good TF2 player is about knowing how to be whatever your team needs you to be, as well as understanding what your teammates are doing.

After you play Medic for a while you'll know to shoot yourself as a Demo or Soldier to help a Medic build an Uber faster
After playing Engie for a while you'll be very careful not to steal metal from your teammates playing Engie
After playing Scout you'll understand where to build your sentries as an Engineer

etc, etc, etc.

there are certain things you should do depending on the class... if you want to help your team.

Iwouldn't recommend you to start as an engineer beucase there are certain key positions to put the sentries to make them more useful.

Use the dispensers engineers put around, and try not to take ammo if there is a dispenser nearby, cause the engies need the ammo to build.
If you are a pyro, try to check for spies around, they are invisible, but the flame is very effective against them.
as a heavy, if you get ubered, try to get enemy sentries. this might be hard if you are far away, before the uber runs out, try to run towards the sentry and then shooting at it. If you are too far and there is an engineer fixing the sentry you won't be able to destroy it.
spy is kind of complicated so I would leave that for later.

For now, just do whatever your teammates do, until you learn the layout of the maps and stuff.

Play the class that has the least amount of people.
