If this is indeed successful, this would mark the death of gaming, instead of lan centers setting up great computers and consoles, all they will do is have OnLive service on mediocre computers, and an OnLive Micro console. And why shouldn't they, it sure as hell will be cheaper and faster. All I'm saying is that the days of building your own PC and upgrading it would be pretty much over, and building my computer made me feel like I had something unique that nobody could just buy at a store.
Pretty soon, all home computers will stop upgrading and all consoles will be replaced with OnLive Micro consoles, and OnLive will proceed to take over the planet, the only ones left will be the core gamers, who stuck with their computers and we will have to face the horde of blood thirsty OnLive Zombies.

When we finally reach the OnLive Headquarters we will have quite the surprise waiting for us, it was SEGA.

Why would they do this? to finally dominate the market as they always wanted the only way to convince SEGA to stop their evil ways will be a tournament, us versus them in every multiplayer game imaginable... And for the first time, /v/ will work together.

ultimately we will lose, they know too much and are not just pencil pushers.

OnLive will enslave the entire Earth, reading into our thoughts, monitoring our every move, and ultimately controlling our bodies.

That logo you see there, that Logo that looms over the planet like an orange meteor, that is the face of death.

But, if we start rallying up early, perhaps we can win.

use your brain and think about it logically.

imagine we have a high res 1080p image. this image will be about 300k-600k, but lets be conservative and say that it will be 300kb.
Now, this service claims that it will stream the game, in high res, at 60fps.
    in other words:
    60x300k/second
    or 18000kb/second
    or 18 megabytes a second

that means that, for HD, your tubes need to be able to reach 18mb/s, and stay that way for as long as you play the game.

    the issues with this are:
    1. if your tubes are weaker than 10mb, your stuck with Wii graphics.
    2. if you are charged by volume, this is going to be more expensive than buying a new computer every year.
    3. you never own the game

and, if you think companies like nvidia, amd/ati or intel aren't going to revolt about this, your a fucking maniac.
    >> Anonymous 03/24/09(Tue)22:55 No.29009876
It is all subscriptions and rentals, you never "buy" a game. You rent the game for a few days on top of the subscription service. Real PC gamers will live on.

If you ever stop subscribing, you have nothing.

Your ISPs will hate this, and begin capping your connection.

I'm not worried, though, because I don't think this is even feasible. I doubt they'll get a product out before the company bankrupts itself, two years from now.

    Brilliant.

Valve has Steam, which of right now has nearly 1 million users logged on.

OnLive not having Valve games = a large percentage of those people sticking with pc's and not using that.

No way Valve would buy in to give their games. They make tons of money already.

Therefore, until Valve dies, PC is still alive.

don't forget that even if your tubes are 10MB/S, your ISP likely oversells like a motherfucker, so if this service takes off, expect ISP's to throw a fit and throttle you/pricejack

also, how in the hell are they going to avoid input lag? even if they somehow eliminate network lag, it will take much more processing power at their datacenter than just playing the game. imagine playing crysis, recording the video, compressing it to a decent size at at least real time speed, and sending it over a network.

    never going to work

Good point Bro. The input lag would suck so hard.
Maybe it works well in their lab, but it would suck hard in the real world.

Imagine a game where you have to snipe. thats all about twitch aiming. it would be impossible, even with dedicated lines.

the only way they MIGHT be able to do it is by either making all the games use autoaim/predictive movement, like caramak implimented in quakeworld. if you remember in that dudes video, he said that each game takes about 2-3 weeks to make it work with their service. perhaps they are doing that?

another big concern i have is where are they getting the processing power to run multiple games at once?

again, lets use crysis as the example. imagine 50,000 people playing crysis at once. that means that their servers need to have 50,000 instances of crysis running at once. thats a fuckton of processing power right there! they are either renting super computers, or using the "programs" you install on your PC/Mac to create a botnet, and collectivelly using everyones processing power to get the job done.

i honestly cant see this service working. and, as you say, ISP's are going to fucking freak out when a user goes from 20gb usage a month to 400gb a month.

it won't work. we don't have the tech to do this today, and it won't ever really be feasible, the data needing to be sent will always be advancing beyond the capabilities to send it. next gen will likely be stereo3D, automatically doubling it. by the time transfer tech catches up to computation speed the benefits of a system like this will hopefully be irrelevant.

the one market for this is developing nations where games are not published, but in posession of high-speed internet. thinking china, india, parts of southern africa and the middle east, even australia. all have high-speed internet but games are traditionally not published there or are absurdly expensive. this system will provide perfect DRM, meaning no risk for publishers to publish on it.

    an inevitable one at that.
As he just said, there's limitations and there will be regions.

But considering the number of consumers with high-bandwidth connections who are gamers who WOULD be interested in this at this time, I think it's unlikely to be a success.

Once the infrastructure has been revamped on a nation-wide scale here in Canada, the US and other counties who still are plagued with a majority of poor internet access, this service, or one like it could be very appealing.

However currently, knowing MY bandwidth limitations and the ones nationally in Canada and the US, I would not vie into this service for anything other than SP games.

Graphics capability and mulitplayer capability will both be ennhanced by a gameserver farm. Every one is playing on the same massive machine colony. Yeah you might be far away from your squad mates but your all linked into the same location.

I was dreaming about this IN THE YEAR 2000 for Cyan's URU game. Graphically a ONLINE MYST game would need this sort of system to render photo realistic images and and to allow players to interact in a unified online virtual world.

In fact this is what the PS3 was suppose to be but I can see Microsoft offering this service on the XBOX. Microsoft should just buy this company outright and run every possible game off through the 360s.

Next gen console development just became game server farm creation.

I'm in the UK and my old ISP, I forget the name, kept bitching at me for using 70+ gig a month on my UNLIMITED broadband package. They don't consider that fair usage.

I don't think this could ever be worthwhile. To buy a brand new PC it'd cost me about £600.
It'd last 2 years before i'd need to upgrade again, and then it'd cost me another £200 considering I wanted to play brand new games and high to max graphics.
That's like £16 a month and I get to actually OWN the PC and play any game I like, not just what they have available and if I choose I don't need to BUY the games.

Add to that the fact I don't want to hog the shit out of my internet connection whenever I play games.

This is both good and bad.

Piracy is ended forever, so PC developers will earn money for their hard work.

However, people might start losing interest in video gaming mainly because it would be too expensive to maintain, and that it can no longer be pirated.

Hardware is not an issue anymore.

But this destroys the little hearts of PC gamers everywhere. Cyrsis runs perfectly on this little fucker, all that money they spent on upgrading their PC will be waisted. This shows a problem to companies dedicated to PC gaming hardware. Half of Microsoft's profits will drop signifigantly.

I'm worried that I can't play my games that I already have anymore, and I need to buy them again.

Also, what about the Wii? Will Nintendo finally fall, or will they refuse to join OnLive?

Considering Koreans suck too much Blizzard dick I don't think pc gaming will ever die. Ever.

This caters to the fucking morons that don't even know what the inside of a computer looks like.

IE: People you don't want playing your game of choice in the first place. Imagine if WoW were to go down.

The shitstorm of god awful, moronic people that would flock to different games would make anyone puke. This is just Xbox live for everything. It'll be a breeding ground for idiots.
