    1. You don't own the games.
    2. You stop paying subscription you lose access to all your games.
    3. Broadband providers will throttle bandwidth thus making service useless.
    4. Even if they don't throttle our current broadband infrastructure can't handle this service.

Shitty idea from shitty companies trying to create shitty DRM solution.

Lets just say you had the fastest connection possible (speed of light)
In 1ms light can travel 299.792458 kilometers for us Americans that's 186.282397 miles.

So if you wanted a connection with a latency similar to that of a PC (1~0.1ms) you could only be a maximum of 93 miles away. They would have to have one in every city, town and hamlet, from sea to sea.

Manufacturing and shipping aren't responsible for the huge price. Publishers are. Publishers would still be needed because they FINANCE game development similar to movie producers.

Games released on Steam as digital downloads still cost $50. The price won't go down, profits will just go up you fucking IMBECILE.

It won't work in the United States of America. They are at least TEN YEARS behind the world in terms of internet infrastructure. While every other European and Asian country has already laid down 50mb/s lines for home users, the United States is absolutely struggling to get down the basic fiber optic required. It's going to take at least five years for the USA to get even nation-wide 15mb/s home connections.

This idea will take off elsewhere in the world. But certainly NOT the US.

Microsoft is clumsy because they always try to make their money gains from directly charging obvious sources - i.e. subscription fees

Valve is smarter than the average dipshit and they don't charge a subscription fee, in turn more people are free to climb into Steam, and then Valve entices them with purchases via both sales and continued support for the games they plan on buying

OnLive is just a really retarded digital GameStop

and the only games in the store are licensed games and EA games

They might generate it that quick, but it will take a lot longer to reach you. For example, the ping to the first hop after my router is 25ms.

So, even if they were colocated with my ISP, I'd be looking at round trips of at least 25ms. Realistically, the number would be double or triple that.

Yes and like I said mine usually clocks at 18mb/s. If yours is dipping much lower than that then change your provider or complain. There is a limit to how much this "up to" can contain before they are false advertising and technically giving you an inferior connection package.

I know, it took a few weeks to get mine from being an 8mb/s connection, they try to fob you off with running checks and procedures but if you keep hassling them a van turns up, digs up your road and you stop threatening to go down to a slower/cheaper package. I fucking love complaining now, that and threatening to take your business elsewhere.

Oh wait this is /v/. Maybe if you tell your mum in enough detail she won't fuck it up when she makes the call for you.

    learn2physics.

In 1ms light can travel 299.792458 kilometers for us Americans that's 186.282397 miles.

We divide that by 2 and get ~93 miles. If you go any further away it's not physically possible to send information fast enough to avoid a latency of more than 1ms.

Now if we realistically look at think you're going to probably get a trip of around 50~80ms both ways.

So in the best possible condition expect a 100ms input lag.

The movie is in a format unplayable by anything other than the device they send to your house, in an encryption that can be undone only by their proprietary hardware in the box and you can only do 3 things with the data in the drive:

Download more movies (Pay), Play, Delete

It's a good idea on paper.

Being able to play high quality games regardless of the computer is pretty cool.

But what of the video quality and controller lag? I don't think we have the infrastructure to support millions of people playing games on this service. Even HD quality videos take awhile to download. But processing the game, sending it to your computer, reading your controller inputs, and actually make it smooth? Sounds a little too idealistic.

They claim that it would be free of lag, but it's only in a closed beta right now. When it goes open, I'd imagine the servers would be experiencing a good deal of stress.
