In Melee, Shadow Ball is a Darkness attack, along with Dark Galaxy. If it turns you dark purple and covers you with dark purple smoke, it's a Darkness-element attack.

saying it like that it hardly counts as an element and more an aspect of the attack. Calling it an "element" brings to mind some type of magic/special ability. Just using explosions as examples doesn't fit because while it is predominantly damage by fire, the idea behind it is more towards the force of the explosion. Counting the fire as means of propulsion (ie green missile and rocket barrels but not Fire Fox since he is using the fire itself and not the force of the propulsion) also seems different from being an elemental attack. They aren't so much focusing on the fire aspect but more the explosion aspect because explosions are always a popular part of combat.

That would be a nice addition. And also include items that could aid the elements. Something like a Flask of Oil, throw at someone then hit them with a Fire attack to do 50% more damage and a guaranteed ignition. Or if someone is wet from a Water attack or from being in a stage's water hazard, any Ice attacks WILL freeze them.

The reason they're so easily confused is because the Upsmash has a really demanding sweetspot. Therefore, the heart knocks back further far more often, which is what you would normally expect of a smash.
