Yeah, because flash media has superior playback capabilities.

By the way, what average consumer would be able to afford that?

I bought an 8gb flash drive for $20 a few days ago.

    Technology is amazing goddamn
    >> Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)16:04 No.26286367
Its still a bit pricey, especially from a mass media distribution standpoint. When I last bought a large SD card online, I paid a little less than $2 a gig. The sweet spot right now for hard drives is far below that, as is optical media.

Now, the question of how much storage does the average person really need is a fair one. And I've found myself living quite comfortably within the limits of my netbook with its now more than doubled storage capacity. But then its not my only place for storing things.

4gig flash chips will soon be competitive with DVDs in bulk. That's when we'll really start to see a shift in media distribuion.

SSD drives have a serious problem with that at the moment and the ones that don't are obscenely expensive and the prices aren't dropping faster enough.

Next generation will still have optical media, OP.

    >> Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)16:10 No.26286571
The only reason solid state storage will overtake disc media is the fact each card WILL fail after a certain amount of reads and cards can be designed to be readable only by the first console they encounter. It will destroy the aftermarket, ushering in a new age of gaming.

Only writes, but games will obviously be read only. The big problem is price. It's just too expensive to be used for the next generation of consoles.

Not a proprietary format, they're not even the major holder in Blu-Ray stock or the leader of the BR consortium (which is most of the industry).

Blu-ray is a Sony format just as much as DVD is. MS will use Blu-ray becaus there won't be any good alternatives to it in 2 years time.

    >> Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)16:14 No.26286754
Call me when a 32GB costs a large publishing company maybe $0.02 like disc media is to print once you mass produce it.

For read-only media (movies, games), it's disc based or DRMed to hell and back downloadable (and downloadable is going to hit a wall very quickly with new ISP usage caps). Get used to it.
    >> Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)16:14 No.26286763
Blu-ray will never catch on in the first place, Microsoft will use a slightly enhanced DVD format for their next console.
