Start off as warrior so then you can take ninja to 37 right afterwards and then have your sub maxed out for blue mage.

Or start off as thief and take that to level 37 from the start and work on warrior as a sub and then work on blue mage and then go back to warrior and take it from 18 to 37

Red Mage however is useless to Blue Mage

Also Warrior sub for Blue Mage is for a very specific spell at the end of the game called Cannonball that does damage based on your defense

Warriors have an ability that sacrifices attack power to gain defense, that's the only reason to use warrior sub, but it's a very potent and powerful one

Warrior sub isn't for just general subbing

DO NOT choose Elvaan if you expect to play mostly mage jobs. Elvaan are the opposite of elves in every other MMO. High STR low INT low MP.

They don't make particularly good thieves or rangers either with their low DEX and AGI They do decently as RNGs because of high STR but mithras (catgirls) more accurate. Elves in FFXI are front line heavy melee not magical tree huggers.
