"According to a report by GamesIndustry.biz, UK developer Free Radical Design is closing its doors.

The company behind the popular TimeSplitters series most recently released the critical and commercial failure Haze, a PlayStation 3-exclusive action game."

TL;DR: yeah, making ps3 exclusive games is a good idea...

As apposed to what, making Timesplitters 4 for the wii?
They went broke due to not having a sponser for TS4 because it wasn't being made on a major console. and with the whole economy in depression not getting a publisher is bad.

No, their games suck shit, too. The only reason they haven't gone into bankruptcy is Sony continuously pays them to keep themselves afloat. Considering Sony's position of critical failure in the market, that's pretty much like a stuck pig giving away its blood. Basically, Sony has about 2 years left tops. Get ready for Uncharted on the 360.

why do you think the ps3 is doing so well in europe? My guess is because its just the American media which believes the 'no gaems' to be true, Microsoft is American after all

PS3 was the major mistake not Haze in general.

The quality of the final product is the result of working on a difficult platform like PS3. The developer has to reach a certain date and any set backs have to be quickly remedied. Free Radical was a small company, they didn't have deep pockets to keep this game in development until it was golden; they had to release it on time.

Things like Graphics take time to fine tune, The PS3 has a relatively weak GPU so you have to use the SPUs to supplement all the smaller operations, which might sound easy but it takes time setting all these little tasks to different operations without overloading one or have another idle in turn bottlenecking performance.

The Cell is only more powerful when all the SPUs and CPU are running at maximum efficiency, and this is a balancing act that becomes mighty complected and drives development time through the roof. Time that could have been spent focus testing the game, tightening up the graphics on level 3, or even reworking gameplay elements that suck.

The problem with blu-ray marketing wise is that it isn't like the jump from VHS to DVD where there was a very clear shift in technology. The switch from an analog tape that has to be rewound after every use and has no way of including additional features except by placing them after the movie to a disk that can skip to scenes, add bookmarks, and include additional material easily was significant. But blu-ray is still, despite whatever technical advances that are actually at work, just another disk. You can make the case all day about how much better the quality is, but when it comes right down to it, it simply isn't the difference that will cause people to switch in droves. Until more people have HD TV's than there are people who own regular TV's, Blu-ray is destined to be a less popular format. And with things the way they are, that's going to be awhile.

I'm seriously confused at how anyone could describe TimeSplitters like that, maybe you played the game at a bad time in your life or maybe you didn't even play it at all. But TimeSplitters was one of the most customizable multiplayer games even now and it was far from boring - totally frantic. However, if it were only the first TimeSplitters game you played then I could see how you've got that impression.. Sort of. I'd put TimeSplitters 2 up there between Perfect Dark and Goldeneye for the best FPS multiplayer ever and the story wasn't that bad either, the whole game had character.

Look what gaming has come to, /v/.

The smaller companies who actually make good games are going out of business because they can't appeal to the new market, which is completely Nintendo's fault.

FRD tried with Haze and failed. Now we'll probably never have a Timesplitters 4.

i still love Quake 2, Cod2(best world war fps ever in my opinion), I like Resistance, the game itself isnt anything revolutionary but i like the whole alternate universe storyline, its really subjective actually

alot of people love halo, alot of people hate halo, so im guessing same thing would apply to timesplitters

Its rather funny, Haze didnt stray that far from the timesplitters formula, other than nectar at times it felt similar to a timesplitters fps

time splitters is just dated in this day and age, people would rather play their Halo and Resistance, but even those games were better polished than Haze so its not really the markets fault...

I totally disagree actually, Haze felt too stiff and nothing like the very fluid TS series. The animations weren't nearly as good, the charm wasn't there at all - hell, they went one worse and gave us completely tedious and aggravating characters (BOOSH!). The weapons were very few, setting was generic and boring (give a hand tot he landcruiser, although it could have been better). Haze wasn't even a shadow to the TimeSplitter series in my opinion and if I didn't know FRD developed it then I'd be none the wiser.

    US sales

    http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171875

    >According to Gamasutra, Little Big Planet failed to even crack to top 20 in November, selling approximately 141,000 copies. Following the game's already lukewarm October debut of 215,000 units, these numbers are hardly encouraging -- especially for a game that associate producer Eric Fong billed as "a hardware seller."

    UK sales

    >the title pushed over 100,000 copies in about 3 weeks time. While the number may seem small, remember that we're only counting the UK (not all of Europe), and most are predicting the actual sales number might be closer to 200,000 when all is said and done this month

    tl;dr

everything on the ps3 sells like shit
