I never really enjoyed the Final Fantasy series, despite only playing X, X-2 (Yes I know it fucking sucked) and XII. But I'd like to give them another try so what would /v/ suggest? I heard VI is better than the much overrated VII.

in b4 none they all suck HURR

IV, VI, IX, maybe III, and you should just try VII so you can look smart when you flame those fangirls.

VI is very similar to VII.

    I said it.

The fanbase for VI is just as defensive and snooty as VII.

If you want a real FF, go for V.

    IX.

    IX. And then VI.

You could go your entire FF career not playing II, VII, and VII, and you would be better off, but everything else you should try. Except XI, but not because it's a bad game; it's just a massive timesink.

Hey OP. You're going to see lots of fanboyism and faggotry in this thread, so here's a bit of my own.

Final Fantasy VII: This is the reason Final Fantasy is so mega-popular these days. FF7 broke the mold and played in a cyberpunk, dystopian world. The overall story structure is a mirror of FF6's (big evil empire, rebel group gonna save the world, etc), but the particulars distinguish it from that game in a numberof ways.

The Materia system is fantastic. Some people complain that it makes each character feel exactly the same, but really, that's horse shit. The Materia system works perfectly in the context of story and gameplay. It enables you to customize each character to your liking, and some characters are better than others at magic, and others are better suited to support Materia.

The story itself is fun, the characters are likable, and the villain makes sense. This is one of the BIGGEST compliments I can give a game--that the enemy is consistent throughout. The primary antagonist, Sephiroth, is a worthwhile villain because you know he's the guy you've got to kill from the get-go. He's a good villain.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/08(Sun)19:59 No.24188074
Yes VI is good, really good, but not the best final fantasy. For me "FF VI is teh best" is just one of those things you say on the interbutts to get social acceptance (yes, social acceptance on the interwebs, it's serious business) by people that never actually played the damn thing on the snes.
    In my opinion that is.
Final fantasy is somewhat personal...you'll hear people that hate Final fantasy A and love B and others that love A and love B...

So...this is somewhat a difficult concept on /v/ but, make the choice on your own.
Play them all if you can, although, since you began on ff X, gone do X-2 and then to XII my guess is that you'll hate the retro aspect of some old games like FF I, II and so on or just the obsolete overall aspect of others and you'll just keep hating ff series.

Final Fantasy VI is also a good game, I hold it just below FF7. The characters in this game have more personality, and each have their own stories fleshed out pretty well throughout the tale.

So far as gameplay goes, each character has his own particular abilities. You have to play strategically, because at certain points throughout the game, you're forced to play with different "teams" doing different missions, so allot your members well.

Kefka is like the Joker Lite; a maniac with no conscience. People love him, mostly, I'm one of the seeming few who don't.

This game is really dark, especially for a SNES title. Magicite was the precursor to Materia, and it differs in the following way: Each character can have only one Magicite at any one time. You can also keep the Magicite equipped awhile and learn magic from it, so yeah--you can get all the characters to have all the spells, but it takes longer.

The opera scene also kicks ass.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/08(Sun)20:03 No.24188233
VIII is shit, anyone who says otherwise is a spider expert

VII is good, but obviously beaten to death by Squeenix's pandering to fangirls, it deserves at least one play through if only for the soundtrack

I is required , you don't have to beat it, but at least play it enough and mess around with different class comps to get an idea of where the series mechanics originated.

    II is shit like VIII

III is very good, esp the DS remake, it's basically I with more classes.

IV is my favorite - it was the first FF I ever played and it combines great narrative and memorable characters with old school gameplay. (II had a good narrative but an utterly retarded system)

V is damn good and I consider it the spiritual successor to I and III in the sense that it is low on plot but high on class customization.

VI is considered the best by many in the series, it certainly is the most epic and has a lot of great characters like Setzer and Sabin. My 2nd favorite.

IX is solid, though if Squeenix really wanted to go back to the roots of FF they'd have made it 2-d instead of "cartoony 3-d with arguably some of the best graphics on the PSOne"

X is decent, but the english dub raped it, hard.

XI is a shitty grindfest timesink, avoid.

XII is like XI but without the monthly fees, sitting on your ass in Valkurm waiting for a party, and has a definite end. Meh character development but a fun dungeon crawler if you're into that thing

    XIII will probably be shit.

You should also try out Final Fantasy Tactics. It's incredibly linear, but the story (even with the poor translation) is great, and the Job system is fucking amazing. It's basically Tactics Ogre, except in a more detailed world and with lots of interesting classes. Each battle takes place on a map, and each map can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to a half hour and longer to play through. This is the Final Fantasy you play only for the gameplay.

Although the music is fucking awesome, too.

As you can see, OP, there is no possible way for /v/ to tell you which game you should try. Everyone has different tastes, so I can give you two options that will help you the best

    1. Don't try the series
    2. Try any of them. Download them. Try them, if you don't like it, try a different one.

But I can say, if you don't like either 5, 6, 7, or 12, then you're probably better off staying away. I hope this helped, OP.

Indeed. That's what makes FF so great. You'll see people with different opinions, and they all have a point. So, when you hate some FF game see what people that loved that game say, and replay it, keeping in mind what makes some people love that game and you'll see, you'll discover an all different game.

Btw, FF IX overrated? Underage b&... when IX came out no one gave 2 shits about it, it was a very discrete game. So stop believing every piece of shit you read on video games forums and talk shit just to say something.
I hated XI the first time I played it, "THIS IS NOT FF /insert number/ HURR DURR!!!11oneone!", then I played it again...and fuck, it really is a great FF.
