I find competition fun (DotA, used to play Mech4 in a league), but at the end of the day, it's still hard for me to take a game seriously, since I primarily play them for enjoyment.

Never said I aspired to be really successful, I've just been playing competitively in games that really had no future (gunz for instance, rumble fighter [another free game]) and would like to move on to a game that actually has some high end function when it comes to competition. I was never the best at the aforementioned games, but I was good at them, and enjoyed playing competitively.

If I had to choose a competitive game to play, it would end up being some mod of HL2, or if I was stuck with a console choice, Halo 3 (shudder) or CoD4.

Really competitive gaming isn't all that it's cracked up to be. You've got to dedicate a LARGE amount of your time to get to the level of other players and even then you still might not make enough money for it to be worth while. If you live in the US then MLG would be your best bet if you are really really serious, if you're in europe then things are tougher seeing that most of the events (WCG,ESWC) have world tour stops.

If you want to play competitively, play for the love of the game, play locally, and don't think you're going to get good money out of it.

THEN, if you think you're good enough you can consider travelling to some closer tournaments.

Also, fighting games are usually a better bet than shooters, especially since many shooters are team based, and you have to rely on people other than yourself.

Personally, I think competitive gaming seems pretty fucking stupid.

Watch some matches of pro players.

While aim and movement is important, it won't help you if you fail to understand tactical and strategic elements of the games. In Quake and other duel FPS it's about controlling items, in Counter-Strike it's about positioning yourself tactically efficient according to the opposing teams' attacking patterns.

It's mainly tactical though, you don't need to plan ahead as much as you need in chess.

Yeah, I was talking more about fighting games. It's all option-based on situations/opponent/position/risk-reward, but real-time. I don't see how that can be a bad thing from a competitive standpoint, unless it's freaking 3D mortal kombat with its "one button counters ALL, including throws" button. But if all the options are solid and varied, it can make for quite interesting high level games.

Real competitive gaming has been dead for years.
