I'm just starting this game and I was wondering what kind of general tips you guys could give? I know there was a bunch of FFXI threads a few weeks ago when people were testing the game out and was wondering if anyone was still playing.

I'm looking at playing a RDM/WHT or BLK/WHT right now. Good/Bad idea? Race? Any help is appreciated as I have no idea what the hell I'm doing.

Oh, very. I don't play FFXI, but I do cyber in WoW (inb4 WoWfag), and keep logs of all the good ones for later. I play a female, though. Lets me alter it in a way I know I'll find more arousing. Easier than hoping the female (Or the person pretending to be one, as it were) agrees with what I want done.

But as much as I would love to share, it would be easy for someone even semi-familiar with the internet to find my character, and get my account b& if I did.

RDM has a high workload 42+ but its a pretty fuck yeah job to play. BLM needs to solo ALOT 51+ inless you gimp it out in level sync partys.
I would say roll galka but you'd need a shitton of MP+ / INT plus gear for both of the jobs you want to play.
So I'd say roll hume(Can play everything without godly gear for some jobs) or taru(Makes fuck yeah RDM's and BLM's).

Mithra is fine too but it has a lower MND stat then humes and thats needed for debuffs to stick when playing RDM. Its fixable with gear though so I say roll what you want.

42+ its all about keeping your mages/paladin refreshed and your tank hasted. So you should be debuffing at the start while healing and buffing. Most partys make you main heal this can be a pain while doing all the others but it you can do it quite well once you get used to the job.

    >> Anonymous 12/07/08(Sun)23:56 No.23864141
    I will post my advice:

RDM/WHM or BLM/WHM are both fine choices, and you will get into parties. Having WHM sub will help, as your other spells won't deal much damage, focus on debuffing the mobs and helping heal. Keep your sub (WHM) levelled! When you play WHM do WHM/BLM.

I brought a Mithra to 75 WHM, any race is okay for WHM (except Galka really), you should never need all your MP at higher levels, so you don't need to be Tarutaru.

BLM at higher levels is all about syncing with elemental chains. RDM is all about debuffing AND refreshing AND hasting, can be very busy. WHM is all about healing healing healing.

Another new FFXIfag starting tonight here.

I was wondering if it's still as hard to level as it was before all these expansions? And is a group still necessary from 10-75 for exp?

I'm looking to play a Samurai or a Dragoon. Is having a warrior subjob a must?

Group exp is still faster however with dancer sub any mele damage dealer can solo without any real downtime. Especially Samurai. If you really want to level one of the jobs you mention I suggest you start out leveling warrior since that will leave you with a pretty high level sub, level monk to 18 for subbing on warrior and start unlocking once you reach 30.

There's an update today that adds one blatant "Kill 10 boars receive EXP" quests per hour today but no one really knows any details about them yet. They might add a bit of exp at least low levels.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)00:12 No.23864646
FFXI isn't about soloing, so it's difficult to solo in general. Go in with the mindset that you are going to be in a party to do most things.

SAM and DRG are very hard to get groups for, unless you have friends. You can't start as either of those classes anyway.

I have not played FFXI in about two years (I have posted some advice here though), I just don't know if it can "hook" me again, I'd like to play, but at the same time, I remember why I stopped playing.

    - Too much time spent doing nothing trying to get a party together, or find people to do quests/missions/etc.
    - Idiots who don't learn how to play their job even in the 30's+ causing entire party to die, or getting slow/shitty xp
    - Going to the same places OVER and OVER to xp

    - The time to gather a party has been severely reduced since level ranges are less important (as long as people are willing to sync to whatever level)
-Again more people to choose from so if you run into someone that horrible (and you still will sadly) it's easier to get rid of them.

BLU is my personal favorite job (it has been since FFV, but I really enjoy the implementation in FFXI). Though versatile, its best and most common use in parties is that of a heavy damage-dealer. In other words, don't sub WHM, 'cause that's honestly pretty pointless.

Melee-centric subs for it are generally the best ones to suit the job. /NIN for Dual-wield at later levels, /THF for some heavy burst damage on physical Blue Magic, and even /WAR for tanking early on (Cocoon can be kinda ridiculous when you're wearing armor that's on par with, or very close to, the best stuff that Warriors and Paladins can get). I haven't tried tanking in groups past 30-ish, though, since I've mainly been flourishing as a DD and doing copious amounts of damage.

Fuck, an FFXI thread without me? That can only mean there is some serious misinformation going on!

I noticed a few problems! First; Dragoon is as hard to get a party with as any other melee job. All melee jobs have that same fucking problem; it's a crowded area.

Now, second, Dragoon is a kickass damage dealer. In terms of sheer damage potential it's above most other melee jobs. It has some hardcore DoT, and it definitely has spike damage potential. Most Dark Knights will try to be a prick and compare spike damage, and in one blow they will definitely put out a bigger number. But think; to get that number, they used all kinds of shit. Souleater, last resort, what the fuck. If you're going to do that kind of crap you have to count a Dragoon's jumps and a wyvern's breath into his damage too. (And let me tell you, the total is fucking astronomical for a good dragoon.)

    Now. Let's talk about Puppetmaster.

I doubt you'll be tanking with BLU as a new character. NIN only gives you dual wield which is really only for looks with BLU. /THF is your best bet. You get a lot of blue spells and you start getting them early on (lv30) that work great with Sneak Attack. Going /WAR you wont see any damage increase to your spells form all the attack bonus.

Hey, if you're playing WHM with the new WotG expansion, SCH is a viable, nearly REQUIRED subjob nowadays. With light arts reducing the mp cost and recast of all spells by 10% alone being worth the cost, but the extra two strategems every four minutes really can help out.

Also, as a sub, when you use dark arts, it makes the black magics available to you more powerful than if you'd subbed BLM in the first place.

Also, as a sub, when you use dark arts, it makes the black magics available to you more powerful than if you'd subbed BLM in the first place.

You get bar-ra's, protera, and shellra. Protera and Shellra are overshadowed by the tier II versions you have, and bar-ra's aren't that fancy in the first place. At your level, /blm literaly gives you a better capacity for healing. You probably have mind gear anyway, so you won't lose any significant potency.

The lowbie way of making some quick cash...

This is specifically for Sandy Citizens only, but anybody could do it if they're willing to make the long trek to Sandy's Auction House (AH). It helps if you have a mule in Sandy.

Try to gather about 10k from crystal sells in the AH, stacks of rabbit hide/beehive chips/silk thread, and generally questing. Buy a hume's fishing rod from the auction house, then buy a few stacks of insect balls.

Go to any city's watering hole and begin to fish for moat carp. If you're in Sandy, simply sell the gathered carp at the auction house for 3k. If not, then make the long trek to Sandy to sell them off or try to sell it at your nation's AH. If you're not from Sandy, then I would recommend creating a mule, another character, starting in Sandy, then sending them your carp to them. Once they sell, send the money back to your main.

Watering holes: inside in any city that has access to FRESHWATER. Don't bother fishing in SALTWATER. Moat carps live in FRESHWATER. Also, if you're in Sandy and you have a class leveled around 10 or higher, fish at West Ronfaure at Knight's Pond. You'll catch nothing but moat carp there but be wary of (!!!) pulls. Just press escape if your fishing music changes to a more "dramatic" effect. Other than that, you can catch about 5-7 stacks every 2-3 hours until fishing fatigue kicks in. If you begin to take longer to fish, then its probably just best to give up fishing for the day and try again the next.

Fishing is fun to do with your newbie buddies, but it's not so hot for money. It sort of seems like it is, but you shouldn't rely on it; especially if you're really new to the game.

You want money? Level the six jobs, sell the crystals, boom. You can afford pretty much all the lowbie gear you'll ever need. No grinding for fish, no real farming for gil since you're progressing your jobs too.

And when you need more money, just sell back gear as you level. You can get by like that while maintaining above average gear until the 30's, then you can start putting your Beastmen's Seals to work.

Fishing is fun though. Give it a shot if it sounds interesting.

You seem like a man who knows what he's doing. Make sure your puppetmaster community isn't shitty on your server.

In the years I spent as a Puppetmaster, I grew up with the pioneers of the new jobs. We learned and found out the cool things together, and it was a constantly fun experience. Once I'd become confident in my puppetry, I made a macro; alt+9, with one single line.

    /sea all pup

My finger is imprinted on my 9 key now. Every free second when I wasn't doing something, I'd hit that macro and see what was up with the pups. At one point, and for a while, every PUP on my server knew me; I made sure no one who was willing to learn would go in the dark about the job. I repeated the same speeches over and over again, always making sure to keep it interesting, explaining the basics of the job to people who were starting it or were just plain interested. Regions weren't a big deal; I have some great memories of drawing pictures with little weeaboo figures to illustrate the function of the job to low level japanese PUPs.

And Carbuncle had some fucking amazing Puppetmasters. At least, while I was around; nowadays they aren't so hot and the community isn't as tight as it used to be. But you can make your Puppetmasters as awesome as mine used to be.

Don't let them go ignorant! Every other puppetmaster is a reflection on yourself; no matter how awesome you are at this job, one suck-ass puppetmaster will tarnish your name. Make them -all- awesome.

That had turned out to be a no-go for the day, so we were just dicking around. I moseyed down to all Char-bear for the hell of it and boom! Thar he be, the mighty kraken beast. There was a little dark knight sitting there AFK. I decided my group should take him on. We had myself as a 75 PUP/PLD, my 75 BLM friend, a 75 BLU, a BLU 60-something, and a 75BRD. I tried tanking him for a bit, bouncing flash between myself and my automaton so he was blinded, but at about 70% he went balls to the wall nuts on me. We called in some reinforcements from a pair of black mages and a red mage, pulling the usual nuke-and-kite strategy. It was intense just keeping him claimed while waiting for them to arrive.

In the end we got him, thanks to my automaton being awesome at blowing shit up and not getting hate and two really good black mages. I let my BLM friend take the joyeuse for his paladin. I really wanted it, but I would have only used it to dick around as a DRG.

I'm dying laughing at the guy who said that DRG has sustainable DPS, what did they change recently? Arguing spike damage over a DRK is retarded for the first part because... that's the only reason they exist. Nothing in the game compares to the damage potential of Spiral Hell and Ground break in terms of SC potential.

Secondly, last time I checked they PALE in comparison to NIN WAR MNK RNG while at the same time having horrid WS to SC into. They get a break at 65 with a terrible WS, but at least it chains into light.

Penta-thrust is their only saving grace, too bad it's worthless against HNM and Blade:Jin, Rampage, Asuran Fists and Sidewinder/Slugshot do far more damage consistently.

Did they give DRGs a Haubergeon (or at least an equivalent piece at least) yet? Last time I played all the DRGs at 75 used either SH or the CoP Body that procs Triple attack(?) (been a while so i cant remember the name.. homam i think).

No hate on the DRGs- just... they're a class that SE must hate judging by how useless they are in FFXI.

Against gods, they did have a bit of a struggle way back when. But nowadays, there's the saving grace of the lovely Angon. And yeah; dark knights do only exist for spike damage. That doesn't mean they're particularly good at it; only on shit like HNMs would you really want a DRK to go nuts. The rest of the time they're nearly a waste of a slot.

Speaking of DRGs, I just soloed Sheep In Antlion's Clothing as DRG/BLU. It's fairly straightforward, though you need luck to limit how many helpers you find. I've gotten 3 foragers mantles so far, two on one run even. Healing 430 HP for 5 MP is so fucking great, love my wyrm armet.

As for the DRG gear, there's Aurum Cuirass, Askar Korazin, and Ares's Cuirass now. If you're curious, go to some ffxi site or just google those names, but DRG can use all of them and they are all very strong pieces. I actually just lost a lot on Askar Korazin tonight, which I'm not too incredibly happy about.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)03:27 No.23870036
how are DRKs not good at spike dmg? Last time I checked DRK pumps out the biggest numbers in the game (especially if exploiting kraken/se/bw)

by the time i quit it was essentially me and 3 other drks kraken clubbing the shit out of every boss in the game, and winning in record times.

mind you it's not conventional, like meleeing kirin way back when.

but being able to melee kirin 100-0 is probably the coolest thing I've been able to do in that game (other than 30 second dynamis lord drop)

But honestly, every class in the game doesn't have contestable damage to NIN or MNK, I don't even see how it's mathematically possible.

FFXI turned into BLMs + PLD/NIN and a healer wotj some other broken class (such as the DRK with kraken combo)... I'm sure that formula hasn't changed much.

Holy shit, dude! -Not- using it is retarded. If you haven't pulled hate yet then there's no reason to cut it off. The worst it can do is an extra cure and a drain on the next mob, but just cutting it off after a weapon skill is a fucking waste.

And yeah, we all know kraken DRKs are pretty awesome. They'd damn well have to be for all the work the setup takes. That's the only good thing I'll say about Dark Knight, aside from the fact that it has some fantastic support and utility spells.

2 variables work into Souleater. Enmity and Healer MP.

A good DRK calls his souleater and saves it for chains 5-7+, to be honest there's no reason you should ever not use souleater to its full duration unless A) NIN tank who isn't worth shit, B) Healer needs mana.

and LOL at you talking about merit groups... with one person spamming heals on a DRK he can do a hilarious amount of damage. Mind you it's worthless at 75 because chaining to infinity is simply reliant on what mobs are coming to you, and any group worth a damn can do it anyways.

Souleater is for fun, and SRSBUSINESS vs. HNMs.

Why the fuck weren't you /WAR anyway? SAM/NIN is total ass for merits. Especially on greater colibri. Third eye is instant and can eat an entire pecking flurry and still stay up. Not only that but berserk/DA will help your DoT to not go to shit. If you have at least a somewhat competent party, SAM/WAR is no trouble at all.

Hell, on DRG, most of the time I go /BLU to birds just so I can main heal while the mage support can focus on keeping haste on everyone with dia 2/3 on constantly. Or use DRG/WHM and grab 5 more DDs (or 4 more DDs and a BRD) and rape the entire camp on an epic scale. It doesn't give me the best personal damage, but the exp/hour is enough to make me not care since I don't have to deal with shitty merit parties.

The problem is I'm not talking about parties that can only get chain 5-7. In a regular party situation, yeah that's perfect.

In merit parties it's not only about mobs coming at you, what happens when the RDM, who's convert timer is down, runs out of MP because your dumb ass used a SE Guillotine inside of chain 40's? Yeah, people die, you lose the chain, and it's the DRK's fault.

It doesn't always happen this way, but I have seen it happen when the DRK is dumb and uses it at the wrong time.

On the flipside, it can save chains too. SAM whiffs a WS, making the mob take longer, Souleater can help nullify it assuming your healers can take the hit at the moment.

It's about playing smart, like I said.

It pisses people off because there is some bullshit stigma about leaving it up for its tiny duration. If you're hitting souleater before your weapon skill, the chances are the mob is probably about to die anyway, be it from you, the SC, or a magic burst. Unless you're hitting it at the beginning of a damn fight, there shouldn't be a problem.

Its dumbass drks that kill themselves that have no concept of how refresh and ballad work. You don't pull that when a RDMs convert is not up and his mp is below 60% when your DD are too busy fapping or whatever to count shadows.

Most of the problem lies in the melee, not the rdm or brd.

All the /v/ FFXIers need to move to the same server. I think we could make a pretty good size LS.

mainly because if the melee are any good the rdm and brd just jerk off in a corner.

honestly, a good bard pulls and does 6 spells. a good rdm heals and uses refresh.

dear me talk about a difficult playthrough

Don't camp. Do salvage. The only great item from fafnir is adaberk. Ever since 2h weapon update, gaxe can perform on par with a ridill war. Koenig is shit and dalmatica is outdated.

I was on Asura before I quit. Thinking about resubbing but if I did, I would stay there.

Doesn't really matter, as long as you don't go to odin (there are WAY to many people on that server, it's crashes from being overloaded sometimes). About a year or so ago you were randomly assigned a server when you joined so that evened out the servers pretty well.

    PRO TIPS

-get a movie to watch while playing this game, even simple tasks like riding the airship can take up to 15+ minutes of waiting

-make sure you enjoy wrangling tons of people to help you do the simplest of tasks, as ffxi is a team-based game, and you can do next to nothing (that is worthwhile) solo.

-be prepared that you could potentially wait years (not an exaggeration in the least) for something to drop; drop rates in ffxi are set to grindan x1000000 mode

Also be sure to exaggerate and use your years old game experience as a basis for explaining about the current game.

Which server is the main /v/ server?
    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)04:59 No.23872084
So all this talk about Souleater has me a bit confused. I'm a mid level DRK and I rarely ever use Souleater because I don't know the "timing" for it. Is this something that I'd have to figure out for myself or what?
    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)05:02 No.23872150
    Keyboard or 360 controller?
    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)05:02 No.23872167
    >>23872084
Yeah pretty much, timing is different for every party setup. MP and quality of tank are probably the best factors, also using it to help move along a chain is great.

Best advice: don't even start playing.
The GUI is super clunky and the game is dying. They also just released even more things for you to pay for! You already have to pay for each additional character too.

Good thing you dont need more than one character
    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)05:15 No.23872487
During my last days in FFXI I started popping Souleater whenever I damn well felt like. Pissed the mage off, but I didn't care... I was acting out. Three and a half years of profession manifesting themselves...

That said, Souleater is the most fun with a Paladin to Cover you.
