    >> Nintendo is the latest company to step into the fight against used games by blocking the sales of its Wii Speak peripheral on the secondary market. Be warned: this is certainly but the first move in what promises to be an all-out assault on the used game market.

    >>MTV Multiplayer has received its press copy of Animal Crossing City Folk, along with the Wii Speak peripheral. The package came with a surprise: a 16-character code is needed to download the Wii Speak channel from Nintendo. The fine print is clear: the code will not be replaced if lost. There is no other way to download the channel. Without the channel, the Wii Speak hardware is just a useless microphone. Anyone buying the hardware secondhand will be out of luck when it comes to getting the channel allowing the hardware to work. Crafty!

    Hardly a surprise.

any moron can see that the majority of pirates wouldn't have bought a game anyway and would instead focus on winning back the customers that pirate due to convenience/price/quality by making high quality game available for internet download at half the price.

but instead they waste money trying to force people to do things there way and if they take the same attitude with secondhand trading they will just piss money away AGAIN and just piss off customers AGAIN.
    >> Anonymous 11/14/08(Fri)21:52 No.22767804

    I just thought of something.

The wii speak isnt implemented yet, right?
as in, nobody should be able to have the channel, right?
as in, the press release should be controlled as to keep leaks from spreading pirated copies, right?

as in YOU HAVE TO TYPE IN A CODE BECAUSE THE GODDAMN GAME ISNT AVAILABLE YET.

im just saying. I hate nintendo as much as the next guy, but this doesn't sound like anti-anything, considering its an advance copy of a game with a new system that has not been implemented.

It ain't right man. I like getting used games because I like owning the game. That's the main reason I don't pirate. Now game companies are going to try to prevent people from getting their money for the games? I mean, the games had to be purchased for full price first, so they got the money from the sale. Now they're mad that they aren't getting money from a game they already got money from?

    Bullshit.

Hopefully the vidya will go through the RIAA cycle faster than most industries have,k and realize that "oh shit they'll just pirate it if we make it hard" and instead work to make games cheap and ready.

I read something in a GameInformer from a few months back about the increase of this. Something about having to pay to fight the final boss or some shit. I hope this doesn't take hold.

Nintendo has always been overly-paranoid about piracy and second-hand sales. Limiting Wii Speak may actually do a lot to kill their casual crowd, lol.

lol WAD Installer. That's kind of encouraging piracy. People who purchase it second-hand will need to use the homebrew WAD Installer to access the Wii Speak software and what's to stop them from also using it to install VC and WiiWare games once they've learned how to use it?

ok, no. This is stupid. All of you saying this is ok, are stupid. All of you saying that the used market is killing videogames, are stupid.

    Lets run through this:

When you pirate, 1 person buys a game, (sometimes no one buys a game) and then thousands of people can play it and own it ALL AT THE SAME TIME, even though 1 or none of the physical product sold.

When you buy used, just as with cars, hardware, houses, etc., when you buy it used, either from a store that bought it from a person (gamestop) or straight from another person, that original owner CAN NO LONGER ENJOY THE PRODUCT, SINCE THEY NO LONGER HAVE IT.

So, company X gets mad that a used game can be sold and sold and sold so many times and they only see profit from the first sale.

They are not entitled to that money. They are only entitled to the sale of 1 physical object. Sure, if i buy a used game, company x sees no money, but company x also didn't have to print another copy of a game for me to buy. They payed no additional manufacturing costs for the product i'm playing, so why should they be entitled to my money?

This is all greed. Companies aren't "hurt" by used game sales, used game sales are simply an area of profit that is out of their reach, but they want it anyway. If a company says they are hurt by used game sales, it means they feel they should be payed multiple times for manufacturing 1 copy of a game. That's the same logic as expecting someone who pays full price for a game to pay full price again 3 or 4 times, because the company feels they should have that money.

Really, the videogame industry is composed of the greediest assholes i've ever seen, and because i've seen no one mention this aspect of it before, /v/ is full of idiots. But that's not a surprise.

    Piracy can hurt. Keyword "can"
Used game sales can never hurt, and any company saying so is a greedy asshole that wants to make money multiple times off of the same manufactured object.

except with games, the product you buy used is literally as good as brand new. it's like piracy, except you're giving someone money to rip you off. they have a good reason to be pissed about used games.

you think if every car sold used was as good as new the auto companies wouldn't lose a fuckton of money?

    >>They payed no additional manufacturing costs for the product i'm playing, so why should they be entitled to my money?

because the cost to the company on games is 90% manufacturing right? nevermind the money they put in to develop it, correct?

royalties only apply selling multiples of 1 item, not selling the same item over and over again.

The music industry gets upset because no one sells a cd to another person without copying all the music to their own computer first. Or they just make a copy of the cd and give it to someone while retaining the original. Royalties applies here because of the creation of copies, or in their eyes, more product.

that has nothing to do with used game sales, since i can't simply make a copy of my game and then sell it to gamestop, or sell them a copy and keep the original (piracy excluded).

Royalties does not apply here. And if i bought a cd from a store, never opened it, never made a copy, never did anything that creates more of the music on that cd, and then turned around and sold it to someone else, i would be completely protected under our consumer laws, and the record companies couldn't touch me.
