I'm a britfag, and I love getting free healthcare, for example - my (american) aunt was over here for a holdiay a few years back, she ended up losing two fingers in a boating accident, and she got them sown back on for free by a world class surgeon. In America that operation would have cost $30,000+ without insurance.

They say the mark of a great country is they way it takes care of it's poor. America has failed that test time and time again.

Free market does not work most of the time. Whenever an institution has an monetary interest, say a hospital, sometimes money will be put before people. Or like America, where money are always put before the people.

If a hospital is government owned, they don't have to care about making monetary profits, they just do what they do and do it damn good at that.

Now some things, like culture and entertainment, works great under a more, but not completely, free market.

And don't come saying it doesn't work. Lots of countries in Europe has made it work for years.

So you are saying that say, what Norway does, taxes oil companies that drill for oil (without interfering) then uses those taxes to create free public health care, perfect education, then all the spare money is invested around the world in ethical corporations that do not have anything to do with weapons manufacturing, weapons testing and environmental damage, and that creates a system where everyone is free, top of human development index, near top in education, health care, income and freedom, is actually one step away from communism?

Now take into account that your American health care system actually uses MORE taxpayer money per person than any other system in the world, free or public, and that the US health care system is as good as Slovenia's, and think again if you like your current system more.

Forget Norway, they were lucky to have great resources (oil + gas).

See what Sweden, Finland or Netherlands do with such limited resources that they have. They do not export oil, they do not have natural gas, they have very limited resources. And yet they manage to create a system far more democratic than any other country, with still public health care and education that has much better results than anywhere else. And their income is huge too.

If those countries can do that, and Norway can do even more because of their resources, imagine what the US could do with the nearly unlimited resources could do if their economic system was better.
