Ok, so we've got a girl who's basically Nia with less connection to the main plot.

Vampire after Vampire wants to kill her for no apparent reason, and she also is immune to mind-related powers for no particular reason.

Reading the wiki on the plot of the books feels like reading the plot summary of the original star wars. It's a jumbled mess of poorly introduced factions with shit/no motivation and horrible HORRIBLE names.

Renesmee? Seriously? That's the name of their daughter? What the FUCK kind of name is that? Anikin Starkiller is a better fucking name.

Philosopher's stone was actually really well-written. The later ones got sloppy and fanservice-y but that's what happens to any popular franchise with a young userbase. It's a shame that the first 3 books get slammed for what the later books and fanbase did.

I've only vaguely heard about Twilight in book form, I saw a trailer for the movie at the cinema and was all like "What the fuck, who would fund this and why?" until it clicked.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)15:07 No.22570688
    "Okay...wtf
Twilight is so much better than Harry Potter ever was, or ever will be. Considering there will not be fifty books in the Twilight series (That is a hyperbole, I know that there are not fifty books in the HP series. That would drive people to insanity.) Sure, Twilight is not something to "complete fangirl" over. They're fictional characters. Nobody should obsess over fictional characters. However Twilight is written exceptionally well, unlike Harry Potter, and even adults enjoy reading about Edward and Bella. My own mother, and my cousin, adore the book. They don't even read. So something HAS to be right there. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Just don't base that opinion from "skimming the book". That's worse than "judging a book by it's cover". Give the book a chance. Actually be serious about reading it. Also, don't be a whore against the trends and refuse to like it because everyone else does, and do NOT go see the movie and base your opinion off of that. Remember, read the book. Don't be a lazy little tard."

"Isabella "Bella" Swan moves from sunny Phoenix, Arizona, to rainy Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie. She chooses to do this so that her mother, Renée, can travel with her new husband, Phil Dwyer, who is a minor league baseball player. In Phoenix she was a bit of an outcast, so it surprises her that she attracts much attention at her new school, and is quickly befriended by several students. Much to her dismay, several boys in the school compete for shy Bella's attention.

When Bella sits next to Edward Cullen in class on her first day of school, Edward seems utterly repulsed by her. He even attempts to change his schedule to avoid her, leaving Bella completely puzzled about his attitude towards her. After tricking a family friend, Jacob Black, into telling her the local tribal legends, Bella concludes that Edward and his family are vampires. Although she was inexplicably attracted to him even when she thought Edward drank human blood, she is much relieved to learn that the Cullens choose to abstain from drinking human blood, and drink animal blood instead. Over time, Edward and Bella fall in love."

Harry Potter isn't a literary masterpiece, but it's a solid kids book and at least entertaining, and J.K. Rowling is pretty respectable for someone so rich.

Twilight is self-masturbatory poorly written fanwank about vampires. Vampires were only entertaining when Dracula was involved and the sexual aspects of his character were intended to be deemed as a negative. Here it's just OMGGGG SOOOO SMEXY XD

I'd say the fifth was probably the worst in that regard, followed by the seventh. The sixth book was really awesome because Harry stopped whining about Voldemort and there wasn't any artificial drama being created and the intro with the prime minister was really awesome and well-written, and reminded me of how much the first book's intro just grabbed me so much. It felt kind of like she was trying to get back to how the first books were.

I don't think the last book was outright awful and was a solid, satisfying conclusion but it definitely had a few fanwanks too many at the end.

Except Nia was actually likable. I mean okay I guess they're similar but they went about Nia's character in a far less obnoxious way.

I always liked the Simon/Nia thing too because they weren't really building it up as an overly dramatic romantic subplot either and it was pretty much concrete "yes they are boyfriend and girlfriend!!" which you don't see much of out of Japan.

Not necessarily, though they tend to be due to the fact that the point of Mary Sues tends to be to play out the author's own fantasies.

    >>For example, Gabe and Tycho's self inserts from Penny Arcade, other than not being bald and pig-like, are far from being mary sues. They just make the commentary easier to make.

Well, Gabe and Tycho are special cases in self-inserts because they weren't initially intended to be self-inserts (in fact, an early strip identifies them by different names) but they realized that a lot of the time they were just translating their own conversations into comic form, so it made sense for them to go ahead and identify the characters as their own avatars.

As opposed to, say, Piro, who very clearly and deliberately makes his representations of himself and his wife better-looking than they really are.

They're essentially reading a properly-written version of Doom: Repercussions of Evil.

It doesn't matter if it's a book, it needs to make you think or at least have some depth to it.

All this book seems to be intend on doing is making you suck Edward's cock because he's that great.

    I never got that far.
I read 1-3 and was like "YES HARRY, YOU'RE HAVING AWESOME ADVENTURES GOD I WISH MY SCHOOL WAS LIKE YOURS"

Then I read 4 and was like "Hey, We're both older, but you're kind of a whiny bitch. I don't know anyone my age who's this... spoiled. Also what happened to describing all the cool things that happened in school? What do you mean we don't find out what the French and German schools are like?"

Then I started to read 5, got to the unlikeable bitch that replaced the headmaster (I'm aware that change wasn't permenant), noticed that the pacing got REALLY slow, and any description of school life was a distant concept. I lost the will to continue.

However, A Series of Unfortunate Events stayed well-written from start to finish. A shade formulaic, but considering the episodic nature of the books and intended audience, it worked.
