Even expert is pretty easy. Its better when you have a bunch of zombies chasing you. Or you get to the checkpoint and your team is almost dead.

I've been to the last room in the demo on expert, with a team of full health, all with medi packs. Was boring.

I've also been to the last room with a team barely alive with no ammo. Shit was a LOT more fun.

Shooting an enemy in the head with a sniper rifle will somehow result in often not getting a headshot kill in TF2 DESPITE SHOOTING HIM IN THE FUCKING HEAD, but will always work in L4D. Even though both games are using the exact same network code components and collision detection mathematics.

Every time I snipe in TF2, I always get what I'm aim for. But you always have to calculate distance and movement speed in it. If you always miss, maybe it's not the hitbox, maybe you're just really lame, no? Especially as you say, you always play as spy, and it's backstab range is all around the character.

    >Just your connection bro. That or you're a shitty sniper.

See, in the Quake 3 days I had a shitty ping and yet I managed to pretty much top the scoreboards on a regular basis playing Sniper all the time in Weapons Factory Arena. Quake 3's lag compensation was intuitive and logical. I would aim a certain number of milliseconds ahead of where I anticipate my target would be -- a lot like real-life sniping, only ping rather than physics dictates the bullet's "speed". But the Source engine's lag compensation is LOLRANDUM XD. Try the "aim ahead" trick based on ping, doesn't work. Then I see SUPAR SNIPARS in TF2 aiming where-the-enemy-was-x-milliseconds-ago and that seems to work... except when I do it. You can tell who played Counterstrike Source all the fucking time.

They just didn't plan the networking shit very well in the Source engine. I wouldn't care if this problem didn't spill over to where it affects the Spy, but when a Heavy is STANDING PERFECTLY STILL EATING A SANDVICH, and I STAB HIM WITH MY FUCKING CROSSHAIRS ON HIS BACK, and he DOESN'T DIE, then I have every right in the world to complain about Valve's incompetence.

CSS - client side hit detection.

If everyone has a low ping, the netcode is fine. Well, unless you're running shitty rates/interp.

Also great netplay, even on my shitty, unreliable dorm connection I've only seen lag once.

Only thing I don't like is that you can't really tell if a player quit - theres been games where the entire time i was talking to a bot and wondering why he was ignoring me.

    >Yeah, instead, when it looked like you got a definite kill on somebody, they strangely didn't die.

Quake 3's lag compensation is more balanced than Source's

Consider a sniper with 500ms ping

In Quake 3, it is entirely that sniper's responsibility to aim a half second ahead. Fair to the sniper? No, but it was fair to the person being hit. Because...

In the Source engine, a Sniper with 500ms ping can aim directly at the person he wants dead. Well, if that person managed to take cover in less than half a second, too bad -- you basically just got headshot through a fucking solid wall.

Quake 3's lag compensation was easy to get used to, more than it sounds like. Team Fortress 2's lag compensation is unpredictable and it's basically a roll of dice when it decides who it wants to fuck over.

Also, spy is by far the most borked. I've backstabbed an engy, sapped his sentry, and got ready for my victory incandescence at the behest of a passing pyro, only to find that A) the engy is alive B) the sentry is sapped C) the sentry killed me, a sequence of events that could only take place in some bizarre nega-dimension where basic causality doesn't apply.

Also can't count the number of times someone spun around to face me after I heard the backstab connect, and counted 1-Mississippi just to make sure.

Nope, YouTube videos of EXPART SNIPARS disprove you.

You'll see them get headshots in which, well, nobody is visibly inside their scope. And yet they weren't aiming ahead of the person, but where that person was HUNDREDS OF MILLISECONDS AGO.

That's where the LOLRANDUM comes in. I can accept Sniper having to aim ahead-of-time (as in real life), and I can accept the game letting the Sniper shots be determined client side (you see the headshot, you get the headshot, even if it wasn't "actually" a true shot to the server)... but aiming where-the-target-WAS? Fuck no, shitty netcode is shitty.

How the fuck is "aim at the person you intend to shoot with a bullet" hard to get used to? If you get sniped in the head, you get sniped in the head. A good sniper can take your face off regardless of how long you were in his field of vision. It's fair to everybody in the same way; it's not like the game is about dodging bullets (rockets, yes, but not bullets).

Yes it does. Nobody aims where the person used to be. That's just a result of the recording software. If you spec a sniper, you'll see the same shit happen, because there's, and here's the shocker, latency between you and the sniper. Those hundreds of milliseconds ago, the sniper was aiming at where he saw the person's head. If you ever played as sniper, you would know that.

    Netcode talk! My favourite subject!

I personally prefer as well how Quakes handled the whole lag thing. Hate to get sniped around corners. In my time, when terms High Ping Bastard and Low Ping Bastard were commonly used, it was really cool to own a whole server with a 56k modem and 300 ping or so. I don't like at all how I can be shot through/behind a wall in Source games.

I haven't had a lot of that "shoot someone in the face, there's the blood decal but no damage" thing in TF2, only when it comes to scouts, but Dystopia has it a lot with all those lights running around with leg boosters. A shame really.

As for OP and >>22559555, I don't think the Source netcode will be that much of a problem when you play against AI creatures, because there's only interpolation from one player. Of course, in the versus more, it might get clunky when trying to shoot at hunters leaping around.

Also, you can play as infected in the demo already: First, enable cheats with "sv_cheats 1", then type "ent_fire !self setteam 3", then type "z_spawn (Boss monster you want to spawn as, e.g. smoker)".
