"I would call upon the video game industry to give parents better information about programs and video games by improving the voluntary rating system we currently have. Broadcasters and video game producers should take it upon themselves to improve this system to include easier to find and easier to understand descriptions of exactly what kind of content is included. But if the industry fails to act, then my administration would." - Barack Obama

You hear that underage b&? Your mommies might not be buying you anymore M rated games soon, she might have to be a actual parent and monitor what you do!

he has a valid point but to be honest, with only a little effort any parent could easily check what is in a game and if it is suitable for their kids, parents who buy their young kids games like GTA should not have kids in the first place

    I agree with Barack.

It's not that parents don't care it's just a lot of them still look at video games as toys (think nintendo and mario) and don't really have a idea of how brutal some of these games really are.

Then again some don't care and will just buy the game to shut their kid up so they don't have to actually involve themselves in their life.

I don't know about you, but I imagine that the parents that buy M-rated games for their 12 year old offspring at least peek into their kid's rooms while they're playing shit like GTA4 and get a good look at what they're letting their kids play. Parents don't look at the ratings. They just buy whatever to please their kids.

The ratings are very descriptive. Like >>22362335 said, it's clear enough. There are even huge signs in game stores saying to check the ratings of each game, and provides descriptions for each rating.

"We need to give parents the tools and information they need to make choices about what programs their children are watching or what video games they are playing. As we move towards a digital environment, there is a golden opportunity for the industry to do this on their own—to use the latest in technology to give parents more information and more choice. For example, this technology could make it possible for parents to create their own family tier just by programming their television to block certain channels, block certain genres of programming like dramas, or block television at certain times of the day. The same can be said of video games, especially as we’re moving into an era when they can be downloaded as easily as today’s movies and television shows."

The guy atleast knows a lot about technology which is more than can be said about most.

It would only be unconstitutional if it was mandatory. The ESRB is a voluntary ratings system, as would be a government one. The only thing that makes it seem mandatory is most major retailers wouldn't stock a game that wasn't rated (Or is rated AO for that matter), so anyone that actually wants to make money has to submit their game for approval.

My state already prevents kids under 18 from buying M-rated games.

I saw a middle-school kid direct his mom to the counter so he could complete his purchase.

    "Blood'n'Guts 4?"
    "Yup."
    "Okay."

    And that was that.

I don't understand the concept of censorship in this country. You may stop a junior from purchasing a game, but then he can go home and turn on MTV and watch a show about a whore and frat boys getting wasted. These are his role models.

I don't think he is going to follow in the foot steps of a in a zombie apocalypse, but he might take an example from someone he could meet in real life... and that person might be exactly what his parents dont want him to be.

When I was 15 years old, my parents did not care if a game was M-rated. Now at the age of 20, the rating system does not affect me at all.

If Obama does replace the industry's rating system (which I would love to have him do because CARA and ESRB is broken and useless), they should model the new media rating system from the BBFC.

Just only ban film and video games that contains child porn and/or incitement to imminent lawless action as a whole and I'll have no problem with it.

That's not something that the government is allowed to do, unless they can prove that the content is a danger to minors (or unless it's pornography). The First Amendment prevents that.

Movie ratings and Parental Advisory stickers are adopted by the industries, but they aren't mandated or enforced by the government. Game ratings should be subject to the same rules.
