I sure as hell never saw a hip hop artist that could be a good role model for any kid I'd raise.

There are some leftist hiphoppers here in Sweden and they seem pretty smart. They don't rap about how much money they have or how many whores they fuck. They don't even rap about killing people. But they look like hippies and do drugs so there goes the respectable bit.

You are putting hip hop and gangsta rap in the same boat and that is the ignorant mistake people do.

Yes, hip hop was about freedom, revolution and maybe even anarchy to an extent. It wasn’t the nicest and happiest thing in the world but it wasn’t evil, violent or as disrespectful as gangsta rap. Gangsta rap turned out to be the hateful, retarded offspring of it, though.

Compare Del with Fat Joe. MF Doom with 50 Cent. Common with Rick Ross. Not the same fucking thing.

the best rappers are the ones who talk about money, guns, sex as well as politics and social issues. It's the contrast that makes it compelling.

    Hip hop isn’t gangsta rap.

Hip hop is about train of thought, consciousness and expression.

Gangsta rap is about boasting money, abusing women and utter materialism.

And it opens up and expands into other countries. Japanese Hip Hop is fucking awesome and they rap about everyday mundane things.

why is it that Hip-Hop is automatically condemned as trash if it isn't about politics?

The Beatles spent most of their time sitting around, getting high and writing bullshit about eggmen and yellow submarines and yet they're considered one of the greatest bands of all time. Johnny Cash wrote tons of songs about murder and drug use, and he is (rightly) considered one of the best musicians ever, yet when the same shit is said in Hip-Hop it's suddenly a disgrace.

fucking double standard bullshit. Most music is about irrelevant things, deal with it.

True, they were socially aware about those things (except Jay Z), but it was all overshadowed by their gangsta rap style. I mean, I honestly did not like Tupac, but everyone who I ask if they like rap will say Tupac just because he is that fucking famous.

And don’t even bring Jay Z into the equation. He is gangsta rap, plain and simple. He’s just less obvious about it.

socially concious rappers are often pretty talented but the problem is that ultimately they're all saying the exact same thing after a while
"they keep puttin' us in jail'
'single mothers raising kids on their own'
    'crackheads die in the streets'
'young black men kill each other over money'
'the government doesn't care about us'

these are all important things that need to be adressed, but when they're just being repeated album after album by the same few artists it just gets dull, just like hearing about dealing drugs and killing people was kind of exciting the first time, but now it's fucking boring and inane.

You need a duality within the mind of the artist to tell a compelling story. No one likes hearing stories about moralfags and no one likes hearing stories about immoral dicks, why is music any different?

I really fucking hate concious rap. Only artist I can stomach is Sage Francis and he's probably ironically the worst of them.

I swear I can only listen to Acid Rap, for some reason. That and specific artists and albums. Most notably Nas, The Black Album (only thing from Jay-Z that I liked), Clipse, and the classic/underground shit that should be obvious at this point.
