The official English translation of Final Fantasy V began shortly after the release of the Japanese version. The game was to be titled "Final Fantasy III" in North America, but the project fell through.[30] Translator Ted Woolsey explained in a 1994 interview, "[Final Fantasy V is] just not accessible enough to the average gamer".[31] Rumors circulated that a second attempt at localization would be made and that the game would be titled Final Fantasy Extreme, but this attempt was also canceled. A third attempt was made to port the game to Microsoft Windows-based personal computers for North American release by developer Top Dog Software, but this was canceled.[30] Another attempt to port the game to Windows for North America was "handled by Eidos Interactive" circa 1998 (but it is unclear whether this is the same version Top Dog Software was working on or an actual fourth attempt).[32] The continual canceling of the localization angered fans and led to Final Fantasy V becoming one of the first games to receive a complete fan translation.[30]

You can play the fan-translated version of the super famicon version. It has a much better translation than the other version.

The PSX version has shit loading screens, but they're not as noticeable as PSX Chrono Trigger

FFV is the black sheep of FF. All of them are about some god wanting to destroy the universe, whereas V is about an evil ancient tree who is angry.

Which is funny in hindsight, considering that back on western-made DOS games, you had games that were just as, if not more complex.
Ironically enough, these games are seen as "too hard and boring" by modern western audiences, yet have an active following amongst a number of japanese enthusiasts, to the point where newer entries are almost entirely japanese-exclusive.

Get the GBA version with the soundfix, it restores the soundfont to the instruments used in the SNES version.

I attribute it to the Japanese having a huge pc scene. Many different platforms and a so many independent developers making stuff. At the time you could buy a magazine and it would come with a few games

Dimensions and BDFF have better systems, to be honest, but FF5 really set the bar down well.

To be honest, I would have loved to have seen CCM as the actual GBA version, just because of how cool it is to mix shit up and actually balanced the system is versus the original.
