All it really did was introduce namine who has the power to alter sora's memories. At the beginning you lose all your memories and then you basically go through bizarro worlds of kh1 and get new fake memories and at the end you save namine who offers to restore all your real memories but it will take a while which is why you're in that egg thing at the start of kh2. Oh and for some reason roxas holds some of your memories so Sora cant wake up until they sacrifice him which is why riku does that

Here, let me show you an example of how great the gameplay design is in kh1, compared to how it works in 2.

As you go up hollow bastion in kh1 (This shit is fucking amazing, I could write an essay about how awesome this one part of the game is) you'll run across chests flying in the air. You're only hint that you need to cast gravity to make them fall(remember when you could use your magic on stuff in the levels in the first game, wasn't that neat?) coming from the fact that you can lock on to the chests.

Quite a bit later, you fight maleficent. She flies around on a platform, doing asshole wizard things like shooting fireballs and summoning dudes. Now while you CAN just bash on her platform like a retard, this takes a while. What you're supposed to do is use gravity to make it fall instantly, meaning that something in the level (that you had to figure out yourself) gives you a shortcut against the boss (if you connect the two things).

Now, if this same boss was in kh2, none of this would be in there. What would happen is that you'd fuck around for a little bit, fighting off her summons and waiting around until you get the promt to use the platform punisher reaction command or something, then you'd push it and watch a longer-then-it-needs-to-be of sora doing 50 flips off all the walls and then slaming her into the ground, then she'd be stunned for a bit and you'd get a couple combos in before she blew you backwards and start the cycle all over again. Repeat for 5ish minutes and you win.

This isn't even close to the only example of the gameplay differences between games

Okay, ignoring how cool moving around wonderland is, and ignoring how the little spellcaster enemies actualy fight like dicks in the first game (they spread apart and run away while shooting at you) Lets talk strictly about the bossfight.

Near the end of the level, you're asked to go around the crazy wonderland backgrounds and find evidence. The first three are in pretty obvious spots, and since you don't actually need to get even a single one (all it does is raise the odds that an easy fight is even easier) most people won't bother to track down the fourth, actually well hidden one.

Getting this box gets you the Ice spell early (you normally get it after beating the boss), what does any of this have to do with the boss? Well, one of his attacks involves setting his baton-hands on fire, which causes him to hit pretty fucking hard, especially since this is still early and you don't have the heal spell yet, he can really fuck you up. If you have the ice spell, you can put his fire-hands out, meaning you got rewarded for exploring by having an easier time against the boss.

You're rewarded for exploring in kh2 (as much as you CAN explore the levels in that game) with either synth items or AP bonuses, either way you're rewarded with an easier time against enemies, the difference is HOW you're rewarded. In the first game, you're rewarded with an active, new/cool ability that makes you're life easier against both the boss and the swarms of asshole spellcaster enemies if you think to use it. In the second, you're rewarded with a passive boost to your numbers, letting you hit X harder and in a cooler-looking way.

It's really the little things like this

Okay, lets take a look at Sora's character at the beginning of the game. He hasn't hit puberty yet and is kind of a wimp. Sure he beats the shit out of his friends with a wooden sword, but the storyline and the gameplay make it pretty clear that Riku and his surprising buffness is top dog. Suddenly shit goes wrong, the crazy dream monsters are real, and he's found himself in some crazy surealist city with no idea where he is or if anyone he knows about is alive, while being constantly chased by monsters because of the sword that HE CAN'T GET RID OFF that want to heat his soul or something. The lose plot of the first game could pretty easily be turned into a horror game.

The point I'm trying to make is that Sora is a kid thrown into an impossible situation he really has no excuse being in, and this is shown in the gameplay. We've got Sora's stance, where it looks like he can barely lift his weapon and is constantly looking to his sides when you idle during fights, the entire thing shows that he's unsure of what he's doing and is basically just swinging and hoping for the best. Similarly the animations for casting most of his spells almost has it look like he's about to drop his sword, and his block animation isn't very standard action heroy either. All these little things help tie into the fact that Sora is still young and has no idea how to fight, something that pretty much never happens in jpgs.

There's more to it then just soras animations, though. The first game has this unique camera angle that's a lot lower/more zoomed to the ground then in later games. This makes everything look bigger, in particular the enemies, further adding into the fact that this kid is fighting all sorts of crazy shit (especially when combined with the really cool heartless designs that were only in this game). The game doesn't mince words when it comes to these enemies, early into Traverse town you watch a heartless straight up eat a guy and turn him into a copy of itself, and this is the only game that has soras heart hovering over his body when you die (why was this removed in later games?) I'm going on a bit of a tangent but what I'm trying to say is that the camera/enemy design play into themes in the story. The fact that soras moveset is a lot more limited (and that the enemies fight a lot smarter) in the first game is another thing that plays up what a big deal the heartless can be.

Come the second game, all of this is gone, sora has more heroic poses for his moves, the heartless that aren't just intentionally fodder (a lot more enemies in this game are intentionally made wimpy) are beaten easily by pushing triangle, sora can do a million flips and the like. For the most part, this isn't actually a problem, he's had two games of this shit when kh2 happens, and he's a lot more used to fighting. However, the situation in the first game is sertianly a lot more interesting and unique, no?

What are you talking about? The only two things I talked about that are "hey you can do this, isn't that neat" are two things you can do in earlier parts of the game. Do you need the game to spell everything out for you?
