Half-Life 2 was in dev time for 5 years, if I recall, so I'd say the max dev time is 5 years, and that's without delays or stalls, which can be good or bad. DNF was in dev time for 12 years, which is generally speaking a terrible idea. It also changed a lot of assets, moved engines, moved platforms, and changed dev teams.

Personally, my golden number is 3 years of development, otherwise you get CoD level polish or Mass Effect 3 levels of retardation.

Oh yeah, there's definitely that. I'm not saying long dev time is terribly worrisome at this stage; it's just me being very cautious. I mean, hell, the Thief and the Cobbler and Redline took like, 30 years and 7 years respectively, and they're fan-fucking-tastic.

Problem is, game development is either EA-levels of 'money money money', Witcher 2 levels of a labor of love, or a labor of love and wanting to be paid for your labor of love. Seven years is worrisome, but usually turns out good/potentially good.

The main problem I have is the fact it's final fantasy, which has been on a steady decline with FFXIII, XIII-2, 14, and then the whole bits where they've been switching assets, moving to a different engine, or otherwise delaying it constantly.

Plus, I hear the Japanese gaming development atmosphere is very..very controlled and hostile, and that long of a dev time over there is heavily worrisome to me, personally.

OOT is a good example, and I am hoping we get another OOT in Versus, but I'm not feeling it and it worries me.

KH2 battle system was complete bullshit. The game felt out of control in a bad way. Press X 6 times, get a 50 hit combo. Evey upgrade just adds like ten more hits to your X button. There's an upgrade that adds a gap closer. There's an upgrade that adds an auto-air combo continuation. Zero thought required to play. Combat in KH wasn't great, but at least it wasn't fucking trivial like 2 was. There was a dodge skill and a reason to use it.
