The underlying game engine does not mean shit.

I don't know much about the "third person shooter" argument. DMC2 is actually like that, guns can be used to kill off everything. But even in DMC3 I fucking hated Gunslinger. I only beat the game once and never used Gunslinger but I watched a friend play Gunslinger and it made me cringe. He was just tapping the gun button until enemies died. Also the argument of "You can't beat DMC1 DMD with only guns" doesn't mean shit. If you can beat the normal mode with mostly guns than that's enough. DMC1 is a ridiculously primitive game by todays standards anyways. Its combat system is ridiculously shallow with few possible combos

DMC3 & 4 actually plays much more smoothly then the new DMC. You can actually see pauses in enemies and combos which really isn't good for a recent DMC game.

DMC2 is mostly ignored by the fans since that game is shit, nobody is going to doubt it and DMC1 hasn't really aged well but it was the one of the best action games at the time.

But new DMC combat you'll see a lot of tells, pauses in enemies which you can actually parry quiet easily in the game.
