The book was commissioned by Kubrick to go along with the film. If you actually read into the background of 2001, it's hilarious. You have a guy on Youtube with videos hypothesizing all sorts of wacky shit based on the symbolism and why certain things are how they are. I think the real mindfuck is hearing how Kubrick played everyone and put in his hidden narratives.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
2001 was the first movie to literally bore me to the point of agony.
Sure it had its moments but for every "I can't let you do that dave" there were just to many scenes where absolutely nothing happened for minutes.

Still, I'm glad I did watch it, afterwards you get the feeling you've achieved something even if your mind is full of rage and fuck.

Kubrick asked Clarke to help him make a science fiction movie. Clarke said his short story "The Sentinel" would make a good set up. LOL SHITTY BORING MOVIE, seriously who can stand 3 hours of fucking NOTHING.

[spoilers]am I underage yet? For those of you who enjoyed 2001, I seriously reccommend Enter The Void. It's 3 hours of DMT-induced after-life experience, and it has clear 2001 influences, check it out and try to got for the uncensored version (avoid the USA release)[/spoiler]
>>
>>144566698
you know everything in that movie would have been possible with enough funding (up to the ending)

save for the engine but the only reason the ship didn't use an orion drive (which would work perfectly) is cause kubrick didn't want to make another movie featuring nukes

Glad I saw this thread.

Ima firin' up my 2 disc letterbox Laserdisc copy.

Still the longest version outside a print.

Bingo.
There's probably atleast one cross-board browser of /a/ here, and they'll realize the exact same shit is why everyone rags on Hyouka. It's slow as fuck, but damn its good.

Well, seeing as you want the short version: Starchildren guiding the evolution of mankind to ensure they keep their war-like sausage fingers the fuck off Europa.

Happy now?

Why don't you check out by watching the movie yourself?
People nowdays want everything served.... soon enough, people won't want to do anything anymore.... I bet an accurrate picture of the future would be people just lying in bed, with some sort of virtual reality thing inserted in their brains, with disposable, fastfood-like information being thrown at their poor neurones (stuff like jokes, memes... the kind of stuff most people do in 4chan, but without actually having to use your body to sit in a computer and stay physically in front of the PC interacting with it).
Anything that would remotely suggest them to actually think for themselves would be catalogued as "boring" and they will move on onto the next disposable information bit.

It's sad but this is what I'm seeing in most people nowdays. Facebook, 4chan, Reddit.... and nobody cares about learning or getting better at anything, they just want fast mental satisfaction... something that just makes them laugh, but will forget the next second, only to find the next funny thing and keep going.

Please tell me I'm wrong, because it's depressing as fuck.

I dunno, maybe its just that by this point I saw/read quite a bit of similar AI logic and precursor evolution shenanigan plots, but I honestly can't agree with all the 4deep6u praise it gets.
Granted, it might have been something for its time, but it really doesn't hold up today to the whole hype people still keep peddling around.
>>
>>144567339

That's why everyone is just saying "lol it's a boring movie about a man going to space with an AI".

Fucking enjoy the movie. There's more to movies than just a fucking synopsis.
>>
But the book explains everything... It's a great story. Don't hate on 2001 for being so randumb, its just a more symbolic representation of the book plot.

>implying /v/ reads
>>
>>144567339
Go watch idiocracy, it depicts the future pretty accurately and also a couple of reasons why it's going to be so shitty.

It's also a very, very funny movie.
>>
>>144567583

If we go by that, there's a lot of Clarke books that touch the subjects in 2001.... hell, 2001 is not my favorite book by him, Childhood's End is a lot better and much more significative.
In fact, 2001 is epic, but very simple in it's core.
And that's why people get mad, they can't understand how something so simple could still have a deep meaning (and no, I don't mean "deep" as in meme-bullshit sprouting, but in the actual meaning of the word), and a complex story can still be about very mundane things.
I can write a haiku about the deepest essense of existence and be deep as fuck, or I could write the most complex encylopedia about it.
You need to stop taking "deep" as if it was a word only hipsters or pretentious people use, remember it is a word and can be used in many different ways and contexts.

Anyway, if you thought the plot in 2001 is not good, that's fine. I have also read a lot of sci-fi, both hard science fiction and fantasy science fiction (and all the subgenres in between), and I can say 2001 (the book) is one of my favorites (but not amongst my top 5).
The movie, however, is in my top 5 of movies of all time, because of the combination of everything in it.

There, I defended 2001 in a seemingly coherent way.

One of my favorite dystopian futuristic movies is Brazil (another movie that probably a lot of people here would find boring as hell).
I will check out Idiocracy, sounds fun.
