Alright guys, I'm here with a perfect plan to stop a vast majority of piracy and gamestop. I know, it's too good to be true.

Anyways, how it works is just that the company gives you extra stuff/content FOR FREE. But there's a catch obviously. The catch is that you only get this free content/stuff if you pre-order/buy the game new.

Pre-ordering should be a guaranteed all free dlc, because as the customer you believed in and gave the developer/publisher money before having a chance to see ratings/borrow from friend or whatever. That deserves all free dlc, and would give people more of an incentive to pre-order rather than gay ass posters. Doing this would allow companies to generally see how their game might do and would allow them to plan out future dlc appropriately. Dlc is here to stay, so deal with it.

Next, if you buy the game new, you get maybe, let's say - 3 dlc codes for addons $10 or more, and 2 separate codes for addons that are less. That's just some wild numbers, but you get the idea - reward for buying new instead of used. Doing this would completely take away the reason to buy a game used.

Then, the game must have guaranteed price drops based on a set amount of time. They wouldn't be massive, maybe a $10 drop after 2-3 months, then $10 more dollars the next 2-4 months. This would let other players who buy used for the sole purpose of it being cheaper, to do exactly that, buy the shit cheaper. Obviously the dlc rewards will lessen slightly as time goes on.

cont.
>>
Now how this stops pirates is it gives them 0 reason to not purchase a game since they are getting rewarded for doing so. You get addons for free for buying it new, so you're getting your money's worth, and even if you don't think the game is worth the price, then you wait a few months for that shit to drop down $30 new and bam, you get 1 free dlc token and a new game. Also, put out demos for fucking everything.

I know I pirate for 2 reasons:
1. Money/don't think the game is worth what they're charging

2. I want a preview of the game

Thoughts /v/?

you know all those codes for the free DLC and shit that are stuffed into the cases of "new" games at gamestop? yeah, open the "new" game, take out your cameraphone, snap a pic, and leave.

you know how wal-mart doesnt keep their PC games behind that glass case? did you know you can just walk right up to a copy of diablo 3, open the damn thing, take a picture of the key code, activate it online and download the client from blizzard?

this is how i got the aya brea diisida 12 costume for lightning and also how i got WoW:BC, and Diablo 3.

is it really that hard?
>>
>>142782829
I didnt buy HR because of the mess with the pre order/exclusive DLC
>>
heres where your plan flops.
they dont give a shit about games.
they just want money.
someone who will pirate a game, will no doubt pirate the dlc.
someone who buys the game, will no doubt buy the dlc.
people who buy the game are mostly idiots, idiots far outweigh the pirates.
Why give something free to try and persuade people who will probably pirate it anyway since "its free, but ya im going to download a safer version that doesnt come with retardware or steam"
Then you are giving free stuff to potential paying costumers.

tl;dr version
The way it is now makes them a shit ton of money, its not going to change.

How exactly is this any different than normal preorders? Pirates will still get all the dlc for free.

Here is how you stop used game sales?
Make a good fucking game that people won't trade in. Games like Mario Kart and and Smash Brothers still retain a high used sale value despite selling millions. Do you know why? Because no one wants to sell their copy.

How do you stop piracy?
You fucking don't. You can help by providing a good service, but there will always be pirates who pirate because they want free games.

That said you could make everything serverside, but that really fucks over your customers hardcore.
>>
>>142784097
Except you forgot the fact that companies lose out BIG TIME on used games sales.

This would completely eliminate used game sales and give the companies all the money that they lose from used game sales.

There would be no used game market at all unless gamestop started pricing games at $30 only a month after release. Why do you think there was all that talk about used games not being able to work on next gen consoles? It's because devs/publishers despise used game sales.

Nothing will stop piracy ever, EVER. They can at least gain more money by giving people rewards for buying their game directly from them at a higher price.

The money they rake in from the used game sales market will be a shit load higher than anything they get from dlc, because most people who buy used buy it because they are cheap, and won't end up buying dlc. I would know, since that's what I did.

Yeah, except people will always trade in their games when they get bored with them no matter how good they are. That's where dlc keeps the game rollin.

When the new edition comes out, people will sell their old edition, like super smash brothers melee.

Think of games as fruit.
When new, its all fresh and full price.
Once people find out how shitty that fruit is, no one buys it.
What happens when no one buys it?
Prices go down.
People in the industry hype the shit out of a game because, like that of the movie industry, they KNOW that they only have a small window of time to make their investment back, therefore, sales are usually only watched for a month, because, well, by that time they've already got another shit game ready to sell, and you know what? people will sell their copy of the previous game BACK to gamestop, who will then stockpile 50+ copies of a game no one wants anymore because version 1.2 just hit shelves and they traded it in to buy that one.
Also, when you buy a game from any retailer, you are not supporting the company that makes them, those retailers already paid that company and ordered a shit ton of copies so they could sell them to you for profit.

Plus DLC costs a lot to make. Most oldfags are conditioned to say "It should be free" because Cliffy B or John Carmack could knock out a map by themselves in about three days due to the fact they were so used to the tools that mapping was second nature and they could use that to prototype their new stuff while also giving some free stuff away to fans as a thank you.

Nowadays, you need artists, programers, testers, the works for it and it takes months rather than days now. Thats why they have to start charging for it because the spend on it isn't some extra soda and maybe olive garden after work. It's literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, now. But because "IT WAS FREE IN THE PAST!", the wider gaming community acts completely ignorant of economics because "I WANT FREE SHIT".

Now you know why there was never an Economics board at GameFAQs

>>142788040

Well, to be honest, it's their own fucking fault for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to get artists that still suck ass much dicks as the ones who aren't that expensive.
>>
>>142788623
hi, you are full of shit.
I am a generalist, i animate, model, texture, etc.
It takes literally NO time to make all this, what takes time? To see the decline in sales. Once sales start dropping, you drop some DLC to boost them, DLC has become a life longevity to some games and only comes out once sales start to decline.
When you say it takes months to make, HA. Right, You know those models used? You know how hard it is to retexture or adjust the model a bit for a new outfit? Maybe a day or two tops, the only time consuming part is approval, the one you usually wait for.
>>
>>142788623
So just give the community tools to make their own maps/mods. They'll be glad to do it for free and it's a win for devs/publishers because most devs consider a good mod to be an audition for a job at their company.

Too bad publishers are too short-sighted to see past the next quarter's earnings.
>>
>>142789921
but this only works if you have a big community and not a potential stillbirth like Red Orchestra 2

Also, it doesn't really work well for genres like FPS
>>
>>142789921
I'm sure some kid that makes a mod will have a chance against others who have worked in the industry before, know how to manage time and make deadlines.
Making a mod in your free time, all fine and dandy, its a different environment when you bring into account deadlines, dailies, reworks, approvals, and the biggest thing MAKING SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE. Modders usually make whats cool to them and have all the time in the world to work with, not true in the industry.

>Generalist
>May as well just write "I AM A UNITY DEVELOPER" in neon letters

Sorry. Ex-Activision QA here. We would see COD maps months before they appeared on services in seriously incomplete status. Lots of missing and placeholder textures and a shit ton of balance stuff being messed around. They did multiple passes on each one. Usually took two months a map to bugfix. And tons of really shitty songs (Mostly European metal) on Guitar Hero that never got released because the audio mixes were awful that we were constantly sending back (Seriously we were shocked "I am Murloc" actually got past QA. The audio mix was that bad and we repeatedly told Neversoft, but they were too busy pushing WT out the door. Activision just made a separate company do DLC from then on because it took time to do it starting out. Eventually they could do a turnaround of about two weeks but still a complete nightmare for a while. So much terrible Metal).

DLC costs time and money and is a complete pain in the ass because it has even smaller vertical slice windows so everything has to be on point.

PS. Fuck that stupid George Romero map in Black Ops and the amount of overtime I had to do on that because Raven were lazy as fuck.
>>
DLC is a shit reason for buying games. Several times now I bought a game on steam and had to pirate another version because I didn't want to buy the DLC.
>>
>>142790826
QA, how was life at the bottom of the food chain?
>>
>>142790912
You're right, it is, but every game is going to have dlc so might as well get it for free.
>>
Cloud Gaming:
>Developers only work for some standard platform, their life is 500x easier. No retail or hardware limitations, updates are just server side automatic.
>Publishers get paid monthly, impossible to pirate or cheat/hack, get paid for private servers and such.
>Users only need to buy one console in their life, and paying monthly they'll get all the games they want (Probably divided in tiers).
>Hardware developers don't need to waste money in marketing they just make hardware for the servers.
>Multiplayer has 10- ping between the servers because they are all pretty close between each other.

Behold, the future.

why don't they just move towards cloud gaming?

i played the tera demo via gaikai and i didn't have any problems at all.

diablo 3 and sc2 sold like 10+ million copies easily because the option to pirate wasn't available for several months. if i didn't have the option to pirate witcher 2 or nintendo ds games i think i would've bought them.
>>
>>142792156
No.

Second hand selling has been going on for thousands of years. It's part of the economy. It keeps the economy going. ONLY game publishers think second hand selling is a bad thing.
>>
>>142791387

Pretty good. Activision paid us quite well and treated us better than a lot of horror stories in the industry (After I was laid off I was offered BioWare. I declined, some others decided to go over. They are living in hell, now. Fuck BioWare. Cunts.). But doing DLC was a complete bastard for them because they spent a ton of time on it. Every COD map had a three month cycle that was tested to death. Especially Zombies in Blops because that had some hilarious stuff that could go wrong. Zombies with no clip mode, anyone?

Better to be working at a lower position at the top than being at the top of a bottom company. Plus, I can pretty much get hired anywhere in software now. Work at Adobe now. Shit is awesome.
>>
>>142792398
I'm not sure if that's a bad thing, but it's worse than piracy for sure.
>>
I'm a pirate

and am forced to buy only cool games that really need to be bought for the complete experience, like mass effect 3

seeing as that shit sucked dicks i regret my money. I'm going to pretend i spent it on diablo 3 that i'm gonna play after pirate servers come up.

The entire monetary market system that this world runs on is so broken and used by the wrong people that it's sickening. So you'll get boycotted in a way that makes you go butthurt.

But they fight us so hard and efficient. My two friends, also pirates, already got battlefield 3 premium. That is 110$ video game....

I think the industry should just realize where gamers are at now. No one thinks a single player game should be worth paying for and online multiplayer seems to be the best form of DRM. Playing a pirated copy of MW3 is just not appealing for me because I want to play with the group of people who purchased the game. On the other hand if I make a single player game there's nothing I can do to ensure that people buy it.

Realistically I think video games are headed in this direction because you see more and more single player dollar games and just about every AAA game out there is made with online multiplayer in mind.

I don't want to call you an idiot, but goddamn you are an idiot.

Person 1 buys game new.
After 1 month person 1 sells game, because he is bored with it.
Person 2 buys game from person 1, through an intermediate (Gamestop)
Person 1 now has money to buy another game
Person 2 might like the game and buy the next installment of that game
Intermediate person (Gamestop) gets some money.
Guy working at gamestop gets his salary and can buy a new game

Furthermore companies like Gamestop have huge advertisement programs, and sell a lot of games new. Without these advertisement programs, they would not sell these games.

See how it works? Second hand selling keeps the market going. Without second hand selling, person 1 and gamestop employee would have no money to buy new games. So how is it a bad thing?

No. Because without second hand sales person 1 would not have enough money to buy the game. There would be no intermediate to promote the game and buy the game. And person 2 would have not enough money anyway.

Only the gaming industry is saying second hand sales are a bad thing. Why? Why not car manufacturers or why not ......?

I pirate for one reason; free stuff with no consequences. It's simple, it's free, nobody gives a shit, am unlikely to get caught, so why the fuck not? There will always be buyfags buying and besides, if even the buyfags stop buying it's a sign for the devs to make better games.
>>
DRM the DLC
so that way, even if you do pirate the game, you still pay for the DLC

the company only loses a little bit instead of a whole lot.

new clothes, new armor, new weapons! $10!
new area to explore! Roughly 20minutes or your time! $30!
New quests! Not much else maybe a few rewards! $10!
More new "fun" clothes, weapons, items (fun meaning they have no business being in the game and mess up the mechanics of the game world entirely) $10!
SECRET CHARACTER $5
SECRET CHARACTER PACK! $30

nickels and dimes add up, and in the end, its really just the principle of it all that matters, why pay $5+ when I could get it for free, why was this not originally avaliable to me when I paid "full price" for the game? Any DLC that downloads in seconds is simply a code to unlock something you already paid for. Tell me how that $$$ dick feels up your ass bro.
