Pyro skillcap is actually pretty high, including stuff like blast rocket jumping. The skill floor (if that's a real term) is actually low, but TF2 offers a lot of space to improve your skills for almost every class.

That's what I was talking about, yeah, but it's the same with nearly every other weapon of every other class. Just look at heavy for example. Or medic. The improvement of skills you say exists is only of strategy. I haven't played the game enough to have used every weapon out there, can the Pyro rocket jump? Well, I don't play TF2 via matchmaking system, so maybe I just wasn't exposed to some of the worst cases. I tend to stick with large gaming community servers, with rules, adequate admins and without shitty game mods.

Are you fucking joking? The soldier is the most useful class in the game. Just because it's unwise to take on enemy team 5 on 1 doesn't mean he doesn't demolish anybody who faces him 1 on 1. Not to mention his insane mobility for such a well armed and armored class.

I dunno OP I've played it since the 07 beta and I only recently stopped playing it to play dota 2 since I can't find anyone skilled enough to play against.

Pubs, pugs and the levels of competitive I had to go through to get to the real players were just full of skilless faggots nonstop.

I'd pick the game back up if someone could actually make me work for a win.

If the average player's age, skill level, ability to ignore cosmetics, and hatred of ponies rose, I'd probably go back.

That's what I was implying, he's the only useful class, but it's not hard to hit with his rockets. Everyone's walking around slow as fuck, the rockets travel fast, it just isn't challenging. I know some people like games like hack n slashes (I think that's the genre I'm thinking of) where you just run around mashing a few keys and you slowly work your way through enemies, but that just isn't fun for me. Also the map design in some gamemodes, especially those involving that cart on the tracks, have crazy choke points that just involve spamming lots of expolsives and are reminiscent of metro 64 in bf3 (another game with terrible gunplay).

At this point, you should have all the weapons you need. There's only a handful of "must haves" and anything that isn't brand new will probably be handed to you by anyone on the server, because spares are so plentiful.

None of the brand new weapons have been good in some time, so you really don't miss out by not buying them.

I'd love for me to be wrong, having bought the game before it went free, so tell me things I might have overlooked. I haven't played much, I maybe have a couple hours gameplay, but this is what I took away from it. I just didn't find running around as a scout or a pyro fun because there was very little skill involved. If you come up one on one against another player of the same class on similar health, it's pretty much 50:50 who wins. Flipping coins isn't fun. Most of the time you come up against someone who has a clear advantage, like a sniper at long range or a pyro at short range. Show me a video of someone going 30:0 or something, show me some impressive gameplay. I guess I'm just not a fan of strategy and class based FPSes.

The game used to be a quirky shooter set in the 60's, with secret espionage bases, weapons and characters that fit that criteria. It was not about fighting pumpkin monsters and exchanging exotic headwear.

Valve seemed to forget this abit in the updates.

The original assets are still the most charming to me.

Take the Scout's bat for example, it looks like it was really made for him. This was enforced by the team logo being printed on it in the beta trailers. So I think it's safe to assume that it was handed to him by the secret organisation he works for, RED or BLU. And what kind of secret organisation would hand out fish for their mercenaries to fight with?

I shouldn't even have to tell you how most hats are worse. It was like Valve went to the most nationalistic flea market in the neighbourhood and bought the most outrageous and crazy hats they could find to model into the game. And I think the team (the characters, that is. Well, maybe Valve too) is losing a great deal of their professionality and their personalities. It just pains me to see a Heavy running around with a glowing/burning/whatever umbrella on his head. It totally kills the mood for me.

Even TF2's totally amazing humor has dropped a great deal.

Take 2fort. 2fort is a secret spybase in the middle of the desert poorly disguised as a farm and an industrial building.
"Happy Farmers Cooperative" was the best name they could come up with for a front. Outside of the "farm" there are flat wooden cows to make the farm look like a legit farm and totally not a secret underground base.

That is funny.

Way funnier than anything Saxton Hale has ever done.

Once you play it enough to know how to dodge ANYTHING, you start killing everyone since nobody but pyros and sentries can reliably hit you.

Dodge skill in tf2 is much more important than how well you can aim. If you fake out soldiers so they fire rockets in the wrong direction you win that fight regardless of how shitty your aim is. If a sniper can't hit you since your movements are erratic and without prediction or human reaction time intervals of moving in one direction, you win.

Rarely do you see someone juke a soldier out well enough to make him waste all 4 rockets or someone good enough to dodge all damage from a soldier that fires at the ground instead of the scout himself.

Though at the same time I had like 4000 hours of gametime so the game lost all of its challenge against even the best players.

I was on an idle/trade server (idle awesomebox) today that I frequent a lot. There were two little kids on there mic spamming and playing hide n go seek on the fucking map. One of the kids was NINE fucking years old. I harassed them for about 15 minutes or so, then gave up and went to a different game.

What the fuck man. When did TF2 start getting the CoD fanbase? I still enjoy the game but if this problem gets worse I'm going to have to go back to Quake Live.

It's a CLASS BASED shooter think about that.
If the game was 100% skill vs skill there wouldn't be a need for classes.
Look at quake or fuck even halo for that matter, they all start off the same, you have to PICK up weapons, everyone has the same Hp and it's more of who handles the situation better than the other opponent.
Tf2 has NONE of those factors.

the problem is that because of tf2's accessible nature it attracts a different crowd than the one it was made for. before they started adding pointless shit it felt very much like the next evolution of classic arcade shooters, obviously due to its pedigree, having started off as a Quake mod. call it dumbed down, i call it refined.

now the community consists of people only scratching the game's surface, never bothering to improve, never bothering to play anything but heavy and pyro, never bothering to employ tactics that go beyond holding mouse 1.

and of course there's the item store. if these drones wouldn't eat that shit up, perhaps valve would use their time actually fixing the countless bugs or making new maps, game modes and actually well thought out weapon unlocks.

Scout and soldier, they're the two most mobile classes in the game with the lowest mobility costs.

Demo has high mobility but massive cost. Pyro is also alright since his airblast aids him in dodge and his base speed is high enough to do regular hitscan juking.

All classes can dodge very well other than heavy really as long as you understand how to juke with left/right strafes

Why are you so bad that you need an entire class devoted to countering skill? Why not just use this fancy thing called aiming skill and shoot the squishy fuckers instead of using a cop out because they can outplay you?

It's like saying "I can't have fun so neither can you" and then you build a sentry that they now have to play around instead of having fun.

I see it as an equalizer in an attempt to bridge the skill gap between good and bad players so terrible players don't have to feel the pain of constantly getting wrecked by players with good dodge skill.

Any class can kill any class, some are just better at doing it a certain way. Some just have more of an edge against others, making the game more diverse instead of just chasing down the best weapon spawns and powerups.

It's mostly because nobody can hit you, you can chase or escape at ridiculous speeds, you control all the health and ammo on the map since you're so fast, and nobody can aim.

Playing like this also makes you a counter to snipers which is cool and makes pyro no longer a soft counter.

Why does spy have the ability to hide and one hit kill? Why not just take it out with sticks or rockets and his skill?
Why do pyros set spies on fire? Why not use the aim heavy spray or use the needle gun to kill him?

Tf2 has a skill ceiling but it's heavily influenced and counters and weapons.

I'll absolutely wreck someone as scout and without fail they'll go nat heavy or gunslinger engi in an attempt to counter me. Nat heavy is easy to win against since it still requires some semblence of aiming so it can easily be dodged but the sentries will make me swap class after a while. Then they try to counter that class so I swap again. Every game I play I end up swapping classes like 8 times a game as the enemy's composition always ends up directly reliant on the class I'm currently playing. They just can't accept being outplayed by the first class so they continue trying to get an advantage by swapping to a counter.

As a result every pub game goes exactly the same way with no variation, I know that if I go scout I'll be seeing scouts, gunslingers, and nat heavies, if I go soldier I'll see scouts, soldiers, pyros and snipers, if I go demo I'll see soldiers, pyros, scouts and snipers, etc.

That's probably the reason I stopped playing now that I think about it since every game I played was the exact same with the exact same reactions to all my moves with no originality.

He does take skill to play. Aiming grenades well and knowing where to plant or airshot the stickies is not as easy as it seems.

However, the Demoman's biggest problem is the fact that a Demoman who's even slightly skillful can ruin every other class and pubstomp the hell out of almost any server. They can accomplish too much and do too much damage for the amount of risk or skill needed to perform at that level.

A good Pyro almost always has to get in close to kill with his primary or Axtinguisher, a good Spy still has times of bad luck where somebody just magically turns around and starts shooting at you, etc.

It also doesn't help that the Demoman can have scripts that instantly fire and explode stickies at the earliest possible moment.

Shit like that is what ruins it.

It's the original, it's just a skin for the regular rl. When I do this I'm using the gunboats as you don't need the shotgun when you never put yourself in a situation where you need it and you land all your rockets.

If you chain your rocket jumps there is no delay, though it takes a bit of practice to figure out how to chain jumps as if you go too early you stop and if you go too late you stop. If done right you bounce and pick up some extra speed depending on the angle the explosion and you make with the ground.

Actually they have one important difference.
The original fires rockets directly from the center of the screen or player model. While the stock RL is held over the right shoulder of the soldier, and actually fires projectiles a little to the right side of your model. Many of the models before the workshop was released had no LOD models including valve's own.

The ambassador used the same model for world and view with no LODS so you had a 9 thousand polygon item with a 1024 texture being drawn from like 5 miles away when you can't even tell what the model is.

I've seen some seriously talented Pyros. It's one of the hardest classes to do well with if the enemy is even halfway competent. But getting airblasts to a science is quite rewarding I'd imagine.

Spy is very skill-based too. A bit of luck there too.

Engineer is rewarding when you do it right. And it's certainly quite difficult when you face off with people without any sentry support. Which is quite often if you aren't hiding in intel.

Sniper is hard to be a worthwhile member of your team if your aim isn't amazing. Very few people are worth the slot though, so only do this if you're dedicated and don't mind your team hating you any time there's more than 2 of the class.

I think sniper and scout are the only two classes that gel with me. I just don't find being an engi and spending most of my time building shit that play the game for me fun. Scouts shotgun has a shitton of spread so I guess i'll stick with the sniper.

This kills me about him. I love the class and I love helping out, but if your team can't get the kills and do their job out on the front line, you won't be doing them any favors getting them there faster.

More than anything what annoys me is that people don't understand a sentries power isn't in its dps, its the presence.

Once people know a sentry is guarding a chokepoint, they wont barrel through and they will try to find a way around.
This slows down the attack.


But this alternate route can normally destroy the sentry nest very quickly.

So what good players should do is patrol the area around the sentry, ACTUALLY DEFEND and fight off attackers, then return to the nest for protection and health.

As well as stopping medics from getting an uber up.

Otherwise the sentry is just a time bomb, sooner or later its going down. Normally sooner because your team of 4 soldiers sit on your dispenser and shoot at anyone the sentry targets.

Completely broken hitboxes. Lagged hitboxes.
Broken hit registration. Balance issues.
Breaking weapons completely so they don't work properly at all.
Weapons that only show one attack that hit multiple times even during misses and kill in that one hit.
Physics objects that bounce off of people instead of killing them.

Patches that break games and mods and don't get fixed in any reasonable amount of time.

This is Valve quality. But you only give a shit about hats, DLC and marketing schemes. You don't give a shit that they still SELL these things when they're so broken you might as well not be playing the them. You don't care that you're not actually playing the fucking game. They sell outright defective products that don't work at the very core of the gameplay. These aren't tiny little bugs. These things ARE the game and pretty much all of these have been always present and never addressed. They are present even under optimal conditions with good framerate, sub 20 ping and no loss and with all rate configs. They are not issues with the client, they are ingrained server-side and in the game itself and they still exist to this day.
They've been doing this for over a decade, if you have any sense, you'll never buy another Valve game again.

It's more that there's over a minute of preparation time, 30 seconds of after match running around, time for the maps to load, and like 15 seconds to respawn. You spend more time not playing the game than you spend playing it.
