On Sunday we rolled out new HTML for 4chan's imageboards. The new code validates HTML5/CSS3, the design should appear exactly the same, pages should load slightly faster (especially long threads), and extension/user script/archive developers should have a much easier job parsing our pages. This is the first time in approximately ten years that it has been updated.

If you are using an extension or app that has not been updated for the changes, some features may not work—you will need to wait for the developer to update their extension/app to be compatible with the new HTML. If you haven't downloaded it already, try the Official 4chan Chrome Extension.

The most significant changes with the new HTML are a new mobile-optimized layout for phones, and inline extension features. Check them out by clicking [Settings] in the upper-right (make sure you don't select features that conflict with those from an extension though), or visit 4chan from your phone!

We are still working through a few bugs with the new code. Please report any bugs you find to newhtml@4chan.org.

They tell you colleges are all the same, that a degree is a degree, but that's not true. If you're going to college, it better be ivy league, else you could just get into the work force without one.

Plus, how is a major like "Game Design" going to help you out in becoming employed with any company requiring software work, if you dont get into a company of developers?

Professional employers of CS majors who are to work in fields other than Game Design are going to look at your resume and expect "Software Engineer" or another more legitimate, defined title.

Glad you asked. 3d modelling for an architecture or engineering firm. As of right now, I've done work experience in a large multinational architecture/engineering company. It was a pretty cruisy job, just taking 2d engineering drawings and modelling them in google sketchup or revit. Yes, multinational architecture corporations use sketchup.

There are few degrees you can get today that are actually worth less than the paper they're printed on.

Game design is one of them.

If you enjoy making games, learn to make games. Taking game design to make games is like taking music theory to learn how to play the guitar.

As someone studying Computer Science and making games in their own time, having studied the industry casually over the past decade.

I couldn't agree more with what you're saying. Up until 2005, it looked like we were about to hit another "great gaming crash". But something happened over the past few years, a mixture of things really that's really saved the future of the industry.

The small man has power again thanks to the evolution of the internet.

>Depends on your major of choice. Right now I'm majoring in design, minoring in software tech.
So what are the courses? What are you learning? What is "software tech" even?

You said you are learning C# and C++, but do you also get the basics from Computer Science. E.g. basic math (analysis and algebra), algorithms, some class on software design patterns? Do you have courses on Graphics programming (OpenGL or DirectX) and Engine design?

If you learn modeling, do you also learn basic anatomy / biology. Architecture?
Is there a course on rendering, and the math or physics involved?

How about the design aspect. Is there a "level design" course; gameplay design?

You missed my point, an engineering or architecture degree coupled with as strong portfolio is more likely to get you a job in the games industry than a bachelor of games design with a strong portfolio.

90% of the developers i've worked with come from science & engineering backgrounds, environmental modellers & level designers have always had relevant tertiary training be it fine arts, architecture or industrial design.

Unless you're a stellar modeller or artist and have a very expansive portfolio you'll be cursing you majored in 'game design.' There's a reason only the very largest studios have one or two full-time hired game designers.

>>
Game designers are a dime a dozen, unless you have connections you will never get a game design job op.
>>
Taking game design is a great addition to your resume.

Making it your major is like asking to be laughed at.

If you want a job, you major in one of the pillars of development. Art. Programming. Music. Writing. You pick one and take a few game design courses as a supplement to show you know your shit about games.

Game design by itself is worthless. You don't learn enough programming to be a programmer. You don't learn enough about art design to be an artist. You don't learn enough about level design to actually MAKE levels.

Like another anon pointed out - it's like music theory. You aren't going to learn how to play an instrument from music theory. It's there to help understand how instruments work and why they work so well.

Ignore the trolls.

They are essentially the same (i.e. you learn how to program), but they both have different applications. In SW Engo you learn how to use programming in engineering applications, so let's say the plant you work at has an expected gas leak, or wants to know what will happen if a gas tank explodes. It will be your job to model this gas leak in Matlab/Octave/whatever your company uses and show it to the big guys. That's it in a nut shell.

CS, I have no idea, but it's not using engineering disciplines.

>Your stupid fucking analogy didn't go as in depth as what I did.
You didn't go in depth, you just spouted nonsense and don't even know what a CS major is. They are not "essentially the same" and CS isn't about "learning programming".
Different anon here, just want to say you're dumb. Yes, that's ad hominem.

>Civil engineering major, $90k starting. Jobs in structural design and safety.

This.

Don't be lazy while you're in school just going for the piece of paper at the end of the run. Go out, meet people, attend job fairs, make yourself known.

The diploma is only a prerequisite, especially in this economy

>This. I know more than a dozen people from the Unity, Unreal and Cryengine development forums who CLAIM to have been taken on by companies for some exceptional game design.
Fix'd.
Everybody on the internet is full of shit.

What are your qualifications to say this? I've been doing 3 years in mechanical engineering, so I have some level of knowledge since I work with SW engos on a daily basis.

This would probably be the best idea. A game studio would much rather see mods/simple games than a piece of paper that says you sat in a classroom.

>What are your qualifications?
>I'm in this field that's not either of the ones discussed
Are you going to say Meng is like CS now? What in the actual fuck?
>>
Okay say I want to learn programming to start on making mods and smaller games to work my way into the games industry. What degree would teach me this the best?
