I have to say that both systems aren't very good at the moment. There's only a few good games that I'd play on both systems, and that just doesn't cut it anymore when I already have a sizable PSP library and an iPad for more casual gaming.

Sony needs to deliver all the games they've shown off previously for the Vita ASAP. So far we've got Wipeout, Uncharted, Gravity Rush and a few smaller titles, and that alone won't cut it when the system cost around $300 when you factor in the price of the SD card. The 3DS remains a kiddie's handheld as far as I'm concerned, due to its lack of titles that cater to western audiences.

While neither having a PS:V or a 3DS, I do have both a PSP and a DS. Anyway, my problem with the PSP as a platform was that it focused on providing a 'console' experience on a small screen, which was just something that never appealed to me. The DS in comparison had a huge range of games which were all perfectly suited to pick up and play and, while lacking any form of Movie or Internet usage, was still in my opinion the superior system. If I wanted to play a 3D platformer with good graphics I'd boot up my PC or a current-gen console, not use a handheld with a tiny screen. This extra GRPHX just pushed the cost of the system up, harming early sales and therefore forcing the system into 2nd place almost from the get-go. The cheapest console seemingly always wins, whether it be the Gameboy or the 3DS.

I started college 3 years ago and the first thing they taught us was that software is what tests the flexibility of the hardware.
Since I've been gaming for 15+ years I quickly learned that Nintendo isn't about making big monolith type hardware to prioritize visuals over gameplay and releasing a console with a 80% fail rate halfway through the warranty. They'd rather be innovative and take risks with different hardware to explore new possibilities and keep the trademark of having virtually non-existent loadtimes.
TL;DR Consoles/Handhelds have pros and cons. Pick the one you like according to your taste and what you prioritize in gaming.

handheld gaming is pretty much dead, face it.

gameboy advance was the pinnacle of handhelds, it was pretty cheap, portable, and built like a tank like most nintendo products up to that point. It had a library that spanned just about every pre 3d console in existence, it did just about everything right.

PSP/ds was a departure from what handheld gaming was supposed to be about. they were cumbersome, expensive, and more fragile, the library was filled with a lot of shovelware and a few good titles. that said i enjoyed my time with my psp, grand theft auto, sid miers pirates, and Ys were all worthy titles.

then smartphones came along, they reintroduced portibility and in the past 3 years have made great advances in terms of both graphics and library size. so right now i have an itouch with Nethack, a really fucking faithful port of DOOM, the Quest [great crpg tribute], and a program to compose and listen to music on.

and then these handheld shitstains come out, even more cumbersome, expensive and limited than the last incarnation. limitations on used games and no advances in graphics. why the fuck would anyone buy these things? i mean they are like something straight out of a sharper image catalog, useless and expensive.

I have both a PSP and a 3DS. 3DS has better graphics and performance overall. I can tell this by playing many games on both systems.

Also consider the fact that that the 3DS is effectively rendering three screens at a time, and still manages to have better visual fidelity than a PSP.
