  • Attention 4chan extension/user script/archive developers: Some time in the next few days, we'll be rolling out a complete HTML rewrite of the imageboards.
The design will remain the same, but the underlying HTML/CSS is completely new, and validates HTML5/CSS3 (with some tweaks to account for cross-browser compatibility).

Please visit this thread to read more about the changes, and here to preview the code.

As a regular user, these changes should not affect you. You will need to update your 4chan browser extensions/user scripts when their maintainer updates them to be compatible with the changes.
The official 4chan Chrome extension will be ready to go when the updates happen, and 4chan X should be ready soon. We'll post more details on the day of the migration!

Depends on how much you like classic heavy metal and how much Jack Black you can tolerate. Put it this way, if Tim Curry chasing you through Rob Halford's collapsing, hair metal themed, castle in a rocket powered car blasting out Dragonforce appeals then you'll love it. I did

    First things first
There's metal and a bunch of it
Speaking as someone who's more partial to punk rock, I can safely say the soundtrack to this game is pretty fucking sweet.

    The Double-Fine humor is there.
The sidequests are kinda bleh but they're optional
    Story is fun
I personally loved the RTS-style action
If you know what you're getting into, its great, most peoples' problems with the game was that they didn't know what they were getting into.

Blame the demo. Probably not Double-Fines fault.

Well I know that it's a RTS, I looked it up since I discussed the game with a mate a few days ago, he got annoyed as hell on the RTS aspect and I said I had no idea what he was talking about.

Looked at the units that existed, the game seemed fun and it's cheap where I love so I thought I'd give it a go, but it's always good to hear /v/s opinion on it first.

Any of it, but Classic mostly. Just look at the Soundtrack, there is something for everyone, I think.

Gameplay isnt all that great, unless you really enjoy that RTS-Action mix they were going for. But I think the Metal setting alone is worth playing the game. Just look at all the voice actors they got: Ronnie James Dio, Lemmy, Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford, Tim Curry...

The driving is pretty much fucking awful. Duke Nukem Forever had better driving. The art is decent. The soundtrack wasn't bad, and neither were the voice actors. Aside from the god-awful driving and the pretty tame RTS portions, it was an average game. Nothing to write home about.

i greatly enjoyed it, and it is the only game i have played recently that i have repplayed. (the replay value might not be that great, but i enjoyed the setting, scenery and feel of the game enough to justify it all.

if the game had had an extra 3,3 million in funding, going towards a bit more actuall content at the end of the game, (it feels a bit tutorialy thougout) it would make my top 10 of all time.

The game is fun as fuck and if you play the battles right, they're the best part by far.

The problem is that most people didn't, because the game did a godawful job of explaining them.

    Watch this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH2DFfk2MVc

That's what the battles play like when done right. If that looks fun, then you'll enjoy the game. If not, then it's probably just not for you, but people saying it's a bad game because of the RTS parts are simply not correct.

Fuck outta here, Brutal Legend is console babbie's first RTS and even at that it's shit.

Brutal Legend should have been an action adventure game, it would have been much better.

Even as not that big of a fan of metal musically I thought the setting and so forth was pretty fun. The thing that killed it is the RTS bits.

OP I honestly regret buying it and I never even finished it. It changed my perception of Tim as a developer and made me realize he's really not that great.

Though Costume Quest, Stacking, and his other shit didn't help that either.

    >console babbie's first RTS and even at that it's shit.

Except that's not true at all, the game plays barely anything like any other RTS game. To call it 'babby's first RTS' is to completely ignore all the mechanics and gameplay the game has available that traditional RTS games don't. Sure, if you play it purely by commanding troops and never get involved in the battle yourself, I can see why you'd think that. But that wasn't the point at all.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)18:50 No.137789208
I loved Brutal Legend, but I feel like it missed a couple marks. The way the game starts, up until the Spider Queen, you're almost expecting a Zelda-like game with driving and metal, complete with songs that you can play to interact with the environment and everything.

Then it sort of takes a turn to the RTS side of things, and while they are great on their own, I don't feel like the last 80% of the game should've been
    >drive to battle
    >have battle
    >drive to next battle
    >recruit a new troop along the way
    >continue driving to next battle

And so on. It would've been great to have sprinklings of things like what the first couple of boss fights were. It's a great game, and you should buy it, but I grit my teeth at EA for collapsing this game into a mere memory of what could have been.

I agree with you but honestly, Zelda games do that shit all the time too. If you think of stage battles as analogous to dungeons in Zelda games (which they pretty much were) then you could make the exact same complaint about Ocarina of Time.

I think the game's bigger problem was that its story completely collapsed on itself two thirds of the way through and ended in the middle of nowhere. There was no triumphant march into the demon lands and battles to push Doviculus and his army back through them, it was just... One shitty pseudo-battle, one shitty boss fight, and that was it.

Huge, huge disappointment. Fuck EA for rushing this game out and spending more money than was spent on its development on fucking marketing.

The problem with getting involved in the RTS sections is that at first, you will die a lot. Because chances are you didn't seek out the song monoliths or whatever they're called to learn new solos to use in combat. I can see how this would make a lot of people realize "maybe I shouldn't be getting involved, and I should just command troops from above to avoid getting killed and losing fans".

You're supposed to get involved, but until you upgrade yourself, you're going to feel like you're made of paper.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)18:56 No.137789875

The thing about the battles was more that they weren't mentioned at all in the marketing and the game was advertised as a much more casual game than it ended up being. People bought it not expecting to have to actually think and plan, and when they suddenly found that they did have to, they were thrown by it. I think if some battle footage had been shown in the marketing and it had been known that this was what the game would ramp up to, people would have taken to it so much better.

The multiplayer actually had potential because each faction really did play differently. I must say Double Fine really pulled quite an ace with how uniquely Doviculus's troops work.

Too bad the only multiplayer that existed was trying to play a console RTS on a console.

Anyone who thinks the RTS in the game was just a casualized version of every PC RTS needs to watch this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgGKTFKe7Ts&feature=related

When you have a fight between two people who know what they're doing it's both strategic as fuck, and nothing like a typical RTS in playstyle. The fact that you're playing as a commander who can smite enemies yourself and drive or ride any of the units you make and manually use a souped-up version of their attack makes the game absolutely worlds apart from Age of Empires or anything else.

    >>137790095
I dunno, I think the gameplay worked pretty damn well for a console RTS. This style of RTS is definitely a million times more feasible with a controller than a traditional RTS game. I still hope they put out a PC version eventually though.

The problem with comparing Zelda dungeons to Brutal Legend stage battles is that most of the time Zelda dungeons have some unique quirk or a new gameplay element to introduce. Granted they all follow a specific formula, but the stage battles feel very monotonous on the whole. The only one that felt truly unique and involved was the final one against Doviculus.

I dunno, there's so much potential with the mechanics that each battle can easily play very differently from each other one. Depending on what troops you build, what you do with them, what you do with yourself, when you decide to upgrade stuff, and so on, there's a lot of potential for variety unless you intentionally just use the same strategy over and over.

The fight with Doviculus was godawful though IMO, considering the monster could spawn anything it liked anywhere in the battlefield and you had no way to stop it or know what it was going to do, there wasn't really any payoff to your decisions or strategy you could employ other than 'rush the things as quick as possible'.

...You know you weren't meant to stop doing any of the action stuff you had been doing previously just because you had to occasionally press a couple buttons to recruit some new troops, right? Hell, you could even play it as a straight action game in the battles if you just carried the flag with you and walked around with your army around you at all times.

But there's always a winning strategy that can usually be used in every fight. That strategy usually consists of
    >hire a bunch of headbangers and a few ranged squads, plus a healer
    >storm the gates

So it defeats the need to have variety. I'd like to draw a comparison to BK: Nuts N Bolts, where the majority of Jiggies could be obtained by using the same vehicle, only slightly modified to suit the specific needs of the challenge, which didn't vary much.

It's not good game design when you make the winning strategy easy to find and exploit over and over again.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)19:13 No.137791745
    >>137791515
True but that's not a flaw with the mechanics, that's a flaw with the enemy AI. Try that in the multiplayer and it's laughably easy to beat. Hell, try it against the harder AI difficulty levels in the multiplayer practice mode and you'll get destroyed. It's only in the single player really that the difficulty is set to casual enough, even on brutal difficulty, that you can get by without ever really needing to get involved in the battle or know what you're doing.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)19:17 No.137792138
    >>137791745

Game mechanics include enemy AI. If AI were better or there were more unique objectives in each battle outside of "storm the gates and occasionally destroy something that is between you and storming the gates", then the generic strategy wouldn't be as easily abused.

    >This is fucking awesome! I am raping everything with my hotrod!
    >What the fuck!? Lemmy, Ozzy, Rob Halford and fucking Tim Curry are major characters in this?!

Alright then, it's an AI difficulty problem rather than an inherent mechanics problem.

It's something which is wrong with how the components of the game are used in the single player rather than something which is actually wrong with those components themself when they're taken on their own, basically. Or in other words: the multiplayer of the game is fine - great, even - it's just that the way it uses that gameplay for the story mode is somewhat lacking.

It's more of a case of solos IMO. The guitar solo that summons sunshine - it neutralizes all enemy buffs and debuffs. Considering the Drowning Doom is all about debuffs, that solo completely wrecks their army, so it's pretty much mandatory for that battle.

Which is why I think it was a fucking stupid idea to hide all the solos away in random corners of the map rather than giving them to you progressively through the game, but whatever.
    >> Anonymous 04/29/12(Sun)19:28 No.137793209
One MAJOR thing the game was lacking was a mini map and some sort of item locator. If they just marked a very general area where the dragons and such were it'd make the free-roaming allot less tedious. I think they did eventually bring out DLC for this, put it wasn't free.

Only a few extra items. It was a bit pointless really, the only useful one was the one that guy mentioned - it's an antenna thing for your car that points to nearby items you haven't found.

The maps are fun though. Honestly, the multiplayer was by far the best part of this game. It's probably pretty empty now though but who knows, maybe we could get a /v/ group together and resurrect it.
