    Hi /v/,
I used to work for Blizzard, Friday was my last day on the job. A month ago, we heard that there were going to be a lot of superfluous positions removed from the company, but that my department (I'm a code-monkey) was 100% safe. A couple weeks ago I (and 7/24 of the people in my section) received notice of severance.
About two years ago, a guy was let-go because he was editing his private wow-related website on his phone... which was on company wifi. I'm assuming he was leaking information on one of the games being developed (he was a swarm dev). Anyway, the company settled with him in exchange for a large 'severance package'; in exchange, he wouldn't update his site or leak any inside information. He originally went to court, but I'm pretty sure they settled outside because the judge hinted that he was going to win otherwise.

If the worst thing that can happen to me is a nice big cheque, then ask away. I won't post any personally-identifying info though, or any code.

    Before you ask, I'm:
    >male
    >30y old
    >Job was basically miscellaneous C++ coding for whatever the 'project-of-the-week was
    >not a WoW GM, even though those were supposed to be the guys who were fired.

    Oh, also, pic related is a small library that I was working on at home last weekend. I just opened it up again to finish it for work on monday when I remembered I'm fucked... so I came here to make this thread ;_;

Uploading code and sharing information that tons of people inside could figure out themselves are two different things. I said in the OP I'm not uploading code.

    >>136098935
I heard the name 'titan' after it was leaked on the internet, but I'm assuming that's the project I was working on (if you're a lowly dev you don't go to meetings, or even see the art unless you're implementing a library, you're only responsible for neat code, compilable-code and optimized code that works... plus like a fuckton of self-documentation).
Everyone in my 'group' at work (guys I have lunch with, etc) decided that we were working on wow2, just from the code we've been working. It's defiantly an online pseudo-fantasy game, from even the names of files / databases we work with.

idk, a couple of the guys who lost their jobs and I went out to The Daily dose (yes, there's actually a bar with that name) and they basically told their life's story after they got drunk enough, including everything about where they worked, and what an asshole their boss was, with various drunken murder-schemes... compared to that I think I';m relativly safe.
    >>136099624
I don't give a fuck about what you think, nor do I know what info you want, when you're given a file called 'old_god_time-whateverthefuck.cpp' you start to take the hints.

Yes, I joined blizzard right when wow was being released, to work on the burning crusade expansion pack. It's been the most fun I've ever had (I got the job out of university, basically my only experience now).
    >>136099909
Well, basically the game takes place in the same universe as wow, but I couldn't say if it's actually a sequel to the game. I've seen the word azeroth a few times, and lots of names seem to have the same root-words.

In laymans terms, I'm working with 'code librarys' that other people have written, but I hvae to make things work with them. For example, the last big project that I worked on was an algorithim to determine where an object should move in 3-d space, if it gets 'crushed' by two other objects that have a higher 'priority' than it. (eg; a moving platform squishes a dummy between a cliff, where does the dummy go?)
    >> Anonymous 04/15/12(Sun)04:32 No.136100608
Would firing coders suggest the project is nearing completion?

Just curious, as a current CompSci student, how did getting a job right out of school go for you? Did you have a lot of work experience before, or did you have a portfolio of programming you had done previously?

Why are you assuming you worked on Titan and not the next WoW expansion? Titan's universe is unrelated to WoW

People get fired people. Stop playing the fucking heart strings.

So many reasons they could fire him, none being activision because remember fuckwads THEY DON'T OWN BLIZZARD.

    Overstaffed. OP said week-by-week work.
Just plain cuts. They want to push less to do more.
OP maybe was shit. He won't say that but nobody likes to think they are shit.

I've seen the full code running on our testing rigs, but it's not really a 'game' at this stage, it lacks an interface, and any real interactivity, other than what you can touch.
I think that they were planning on merging our office with the one beside us (basically tearing down a floor-divider), because they basically did the same stuff, and we were always running back and forth.
    >>136100661
I was originally one and a half years into a math major, but I realized that there weren't any jobs out there that needed ONLY a math major (INB4 300k starting, etc). eg: jobs need degrees in both math AND chem, sop I switched to CIS (basically compSci with more coding). One of my lab monitors from my first-year Java class that I still kept in touch with was working for blizz at the time as a dev, and he got his boss to hire me onto the same team.
    >>136100829
    Yay, real questions!
Favourite game ever is HALO, I was soo good at that game... I played small java games when I was in university, and I played wow when I was working on it.
    >>136101076
No idea. Almost all the coding we did had to be 100% efficient, because our bottleneck is 4 year-old PCs from bestbuy with integrated GPUs, they probably have the same challenge.
